3 Pastoral Pondering Renewal It has been pretty hot lately. Many have to endure the heat in their daily work. We also spend time with our leisure activities outside. For others the heat can be oppressive. If you have air conditioning it is really tempting to just stay inside as long as possible on those hot days. But, sometimes we must leave the comfort of our controlled environments to encounter the world, to live. This has gotten me thinking about our encounters with God. Have we relied too often on controlled environments? How might we step outside our comfort zones? One night, I found myself driven outside. Away from the hum of the air conditioners, and into the open air. Pulled away from the distractions of Wi-Fi and busyness of my thoughts I waded into the open quiet space of creation. There I was greeted by the gentle light of the fireflies. I encountered a place of prayer. Some have called these thin places, where the veil between human and divine is less distant and more like a sheer curtain. I heard anew the gentle breath of the Spirit moving about this place. It was an appointment with God, but I took more time to listen than to speak. yet to discover. Then I took off my shoes, for this is holy ground. Do you long for a time of renewal in your life? Have you discovered a thin place where you are encountered by the divine? Maybe we need to reclaim the time to step outside of our controlled comfort and rediscover a place or places of renewal. Maybe, we need to take off our shoes and get in touch with the holy ground that is right under our feet. The Holy Spirit is on the move and leading us to the edges of what we have known and asking us to step outside our comfort zone. There we might better hear the whisper of the Spirit and dance with the joy of the fireflies and know the heart of God that sings with love, imagination, and new possibilities given for you in Jesus Christ. May the Peace of Christ be with you always... Pastor Lee Renewal. That was the one-word answer to my prayer. Renewal of what or who? I don t know. So, I prayed more. In this thin place, amid the fire flies, I prayed for you, dear friends. I prayed for our renewal. I prayed for healing, the renewal of bodies, minds, and spirits that have been so heavy-burdened and pushed to their limits. I prayed for the renewal of our life together in this beloved community of discipleship; the renewal of our energy for the work ahead; the renewal of our hearts to love beyond what we thought possible. I prayed for our courage to follow where Jesus leads us, even when it is to unfamiliar territory, away from the comforts that we have known toward the possibilities we are

Summer Book Study Mondays beginning July 2 6:30pm at the parsonage (134 Bridge St) The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical By Shane Claiborne In this book, Shane Claiborne describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting us into a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a broken world... Shane lives out this revolution each day in his local neighborhood, an impoverished community in North Philadelphia, by living among the homeless, helping local kids with homework, and 'practicing resurrection' in the forgotten places of our world. Shane's message will comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable...but will also invite us into an irresistible revolution. His is a vision for ordinary radicals ready to change the world with little acts of love. New This Year: Jubilee Recycling Ministry! At this year s Jubilee, we will be encouraging the care of creation through recycling! Two collection points will be set up on the Jubilee grounds for visitors to recycle their aluminum cans. Any money we get from recycling the cans will then be used for children s ministry, purchasing more Bibles or even camp scholarships! Look for the NCLP recycling stations & help us do our part for the earth at this year s Jubilee!

7 If you will be attending, please call or text Jessica at Come and join us as we celebrate this special birthday with this special little man! You are Invited to a First Birthday Party in honor of Amos Fundis! Amos Fundis (son of Zach & Jessica) is turning 1 and they are inviting everyone to the celebration! A party will be held at the Fundis farm (246 Humber School Road, Rockwood, PA 15557) on Sunday, August 5th at 1:00pm. Lunch & cake will be served! The Parsonage Needs a New Roof! Part of the New Centerville Lutheran Parish s ministry together includes maintaining our own parsonage in New Centerville, a house that continues to serve as a home for our pastors. It has been several years since the roof on the house has been replaced and it is starting to show signs of wear. The Joint Council has looked at bids, and the cost would start at around $5,000 (not including the cost of labor). Working together, we hope to be able to fund this project by fall. If you would like to make a donation towards the new parsonage roof project, please mark your Sunday offering envelope and the secretaries will make sure that the funds go to the right place! Thank you in advance for helping us continue to offer a home to our pastors!

8 Worship Readings for August 2018 with introductions from SundaysandSeasons.com Sunday, August 5 Time after Pentecost (green) Apparently not satisfied by Jesus feeding of thousands, some who were there press him for a sign of his power; perhaps it is daily manna they want. As always in John s gospel when people want a sign, Jesus offers himself. He is the bread come from heaven to give life to the world. He calls us to come to him and believe in him, and through that relationship to know the one who sent him. Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15 Psalm 78:23-29 Ephesians 4:1-16 John 6:24-35 Sunday, August 12 Time after Pentecost (green) Jesus says that the bread he gives for the life of the world is his flesh, and whoever eats this bread has eternal life now and will be raised on the last day. In Ephesians Paul tells us what this life Jesus gives us looks like, this life we live as those marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit in baptism. We live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us. The whole purpose of life is giving yourself for the other. 1 Kings 19:4-8 Psalm 34:1-8 Ephesians 4:25--5:2 John 6:35, Sunday, August 19 Time after Pentecost (green) Wisdom prepares a feast, sets her table, and invites all to come and eat her bread and drink her wine. The first chapter of John s gospel owes much to the biblical tradition that imagined Wisdom as existing before anything was created and having a role in the work of creation. Christ, the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24), today invites us to eat his flesh and drink his blood. John s gospel includes no account of the institution of the Lord s supper, but here we can't help hearing Jesus words as an invitation to the meal of bread and wine we share. Proverbs 9:1-6 Psalm 34:9-14 Ephesians 5:15-20 John 6:51-58 Sunday, August 26 Time after Pentecost (green) In today s gospel many people take offense at Jesus invitation to eat his flesh and drink his blood; even many of Jesus disciples peel off. This is the backdrop in John s gospel for Peter s confession of faith. To whom can we go? asks Peter, in words we sometimes sing just before the gospel is read. You have the words of eternal life. In order to take such a stand, as Peter and Joshua did, Paul tells us to arm ourselves with the word of God. We pray in the Spirit that we might be bold ambassadors of the gospel. Joshua 24:1-2a, Psalm 34:15-22 Ephesians 6:10-20 John 6:56-69 Sunday, September 2 Time after Pentecost (green) Jesus protests against human customs being given the weight of divine law, while the essence of God s law is ignored. True uncleanness comes not from external things, but from the intentions of the human heart. Last week Jesus told us the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. Now James says God has given us birth by the word of truth. We, having been washed in the word when we were born in the font, return to it every Sunday to ask God to create in us clean hearts. Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Psalm 15 James 1:17-27 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
