In fact two weeks ago I met Gollum at Wellington Airport when Tom Caballes and I spent several hours in an airport meeting. I kept wondering why so many people kept coming close and taking photos of where I was sat and I assumed they were taking aircraft shots out on the tarmac over my shoulder. It was Tom who eventually spotted Gollum lurking a couple of metres above me and probably drooling over my coffee! But, as a Christian and on the same journey as you, I will not be taking an Unexpected Journey and fighting against dragons, goblins, or orcs. I will be continuing an Expected Journey and continuing the fight against sin and sinful patterns in my life as I journey towards God and into Eternity. Paul Kyle in his song Now is the Time sings of such things when time is past and eternity is begun, when Jesus comes again in glory. This week I was again encouraged in this Christian journey in hearing of the passing of Mary, a previous member of the Lamb of God Christchurch. Bill and Mary were early leaders in Christchurch Branch and very fine people. Bill was manager of a large organisation in the city, and Mary involved in the New Zealand Ballet. Some years ago Mary contracted debilitating dementia, Bill gave up his job, and has wonderfully cared for her these years. Veronica and I last met them last year as Bill pushed Mary around the streets in her wheelchair. His love and care for Mary were obvious in every movement and expression as we talked. He included Mary in everything he said despite there being no acknowledgement she was aware of our presence. I was so grateful to

2 OUR PEOPLE Congratulations! To Tep and Beth Roxas [Wellington] who recently tied the knot in the Philippines. With sadness, yet confidence in the Lord, we remember: To Peter & Jacinta Dalgado [Auckland] and family, as Peter's brother has passed away. 2 the Lord that they had shared in our lives over many years, and that on this day Bill gave another teaching, indeed a very practical walking, talking teaching to me. A great example of a Christian marriage and until death us do part. That s where I am going. It is not an Unexpected Journey but rather an Expected Journey travelled with Veronica and my family, and with you, my brothers and sisters in the Lamb of God. Off you go now Gollum and let me finish my coffee Roger Foley: Senior Coordinator [Note to all Branch leaders: Please send your local news/snippets to Roger Foley or Tom Caballes so that we can acknowledge important occasions in the lives of our brothers and sisters and make sure we do not miss any of them.] NEWS AND ARTICLES NOTE TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS - Grace, Mercy and Forgiveness Two years on December 8 the Lord allowed that I should live through significant cardiac surgery entailing the by-passing of thirteen arterial blockages, with five being 90% closure or higher. I KNOW the Lord intervened and I am grateful to him. As you will know the recovery time from such intrusive surgery is a return to light work, if at all possible, in about four months - being mid-april. However just seventy five days after surgery we were hit with that massive 6.3 earthquake causing much loss of life and so much destruction in and around our home and city. Any thoughts of following a managed process towards cardiac recovery finished on 22 February at nine minutes to one in the afternoon. Then Veronica s mum died in England and Bruce kindly escorted her back to the UK to be with her family. The thirteen days following the earthquake were basic survival mode at No. 9 for Gladys the cat and me - no water, no power [I had a generator courtesy of Kieran and Sue but gave it to a neighbour with children] no sewer, no cooking, no refrigeration, scarce petrol and all of the flow on consequences. I simply had no option but to engage circumstances and trust in God for my recovery.

3 3 No one will ever convince me that God did not have his hand on me through all of that. And no one will convince me that I was worthy of any special intervention. At work here was absolute grace and mercy and forgiveness. I often reflect on those first dreamy minutes as my body responded so slowly into consciousness some twelve of fifteen or whatever hours after surgery. Those moments are special [I m alive ] but confused in order as the body comes out, then slips back into un-consciousness. But I remember Veronica, Sue and Kirsten being there. Veronica holding my hand and being amazed at my hunger, Sue standing over my bed in her work gear but still seemingly so far away and speaking in echoes to the hospital staff, and I thought I saw Kirsten walking away from the bed but returning later with an orange drink for me [later on I found out she was there and she did this - God bless her]. My other vivid memory is of our grandchildren surrounding the bed in the recovery room and being warned by their dad not to get too close to me because of all of the wires, tubes, bags and life reading monitors attached to granddad. I must have looked pretty terrible. Then when it came time for the family to go as I slipped once more into dream time, young Sebastian completely forgot dad s instruction and came across the bed to hug and kiss me. The room erupted into oh no and look out but I survived, again! I went into that unexpected surgery as prepared as I could be before the Lord. But I was anxious not for myself, but for my family. I thank God I am still around to enjoy them and to serve with you. Thank you to all of you. Roger SOUTH ISLAND BRANCH NEWS From Blenheim, Branch Lord s Day Meal: On Saturday, December 1, the Blenheim sisters and brothers gathered for a Branch Lords Day Meal in the St Mary s Parish Centre. The formal celebrations lead by Bill & Jenny McElhinney, was attended by about 25 including our Parish Priest Fr Bill Warwick. After the meal, there was an opportunity of honouring David & Janet Aberhart [photo below] as they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in late October. The venue was decorated with flowers, balloons, candles, etc. and looked amazing. It was an evening with great food and fellowship had by all. From Kaikoura: How about this for an Outreach Ministry Team trip from Tai and De Stirling of Kaikoura and team? You will note the 4.30am start by car from Kaikoura, and the distances and extent of the ministry trip. These Maori brothers and sisters are full on for the Lord and will minister in thirteen mainly rural or semi-rural locations throughout the North Island, arriving back in Kaikoura in time from praying in the New Year. 5 AUCKLAND BRANCH CHRISTMAS ACTIVITY 5 The Lamb of God Auckland branch met for their last meeting on December 9 at Onehunga. There was a joyous praise and worship, followed by end-of-year notices and then the tables and chairs were arranged so that cell groups could join up and share a meal (all were advised to bring a plate). Santa Claus made his arrival and the children were pleased to be given a hug and a little present. The house group leaders too were surprised with Santa wishes and a gift. The A-Team [fundraising team] stepped up as usual with some entertainment even though it was a last-minute notice! The group was divided into teams and each team was given a popular Christmas song which they had to modify with words of their own and sing their version of the songs when they went up! It was good fun some highlights were Tony s enthusiastic singing, Bruce smiling and most happy to play the guitar for two groups, Arca singing some Konkani lyrics, Jessie holding up Anusha s little baby as Baby Jesus and the youth singing they did not know what to sing with Rohan leading them! WELLINGTON BRANCH CHRISTMAS BARBECUE The Lamb of God Wellington branch had their Christmas celebration together in a park in Aotea last December 9. It was a great summer day, as clouds and rain took a holiday. Everyone brought their favourite barbecue dish and the brothers and sisters had fun taking turn in cooking and looking after [tasting?] the different meat, vegetable and fruit items. After lunch, they played some games and exchanged gifts as families. Then the Kairos youth sang some Christmas carols as everyone opened their wallets and coin purses to give to the fundraising drive of the youth towards Summer Oasis. As the afternoon ended, OG and Tom thanked everyone for being part of the branch as we look forward in much anticipation in working together in 2013.

7 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done January Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. [Matthew 6:10] I must have prayed the Lord s Prayer hundreds of times since my early childhood to adulthood. When I was young, I was not really sure of what it really means. In fact, I was a bit afraid of asking God s Kingdom to come [will it mean I will die?]. As I grew older and as God touched my life in a special way, I began to understand deeper what that that prayer meant. I am to seek God s rule and reign to be visible now, and that His will may be obeyed in my life and others, too. We ought to desire God s sovereignty and will be seen now as it is seen in heaven. But in the world as we see it and experience it now this isn t happening. Our society strives to avoid any possibility of offending anyone - except God [Billy Graham]. So How Do We Apply That Prayer Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done - Into Our Life? 1. We need to develop within us the heart and mind of God. We need to see ourselves and the world with God s own eyes, so that we can know how His Kingdom will come about. Ask: how can I make God reign be visible in my own life? Is God the King of my life in all aspects and areas of my life? 2. We also need to know the will of God for our lives, our neighbours and the world that we live in. When we know God s will, then we can desire it to happen. 3. We need to do what we can in where we are situated to promote God s Kingdom and His will in love, although this might mean being at odds with the status quo. But we desire to please God rather than men. [Refer to Acts 5:29] As we aim to obey God, we would rather be respected than be liked. 4. Be prepared for rejection and anticipate defeats at times. Why? Because the whole world lies in the power of the evil one... [1 John 5:19]. We are like swimming against a very strong and steady current of worldly values and sensual ideals. But we know, even if we face some defeats, we will one day triumph. God s Kingdom will come, and His will be done if not now, it will happen later! We need to be patient. 5. Pray and intercede for our own lives, our families and friends, our neighbours, officemates and school/uni mates, for God Kingdom to come and God s will become evident in their lives. Other Scripture References 1. I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. [Romans 12:1-2] 2. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. [Ephesians 6:12] 3. Other Scripture references: Ephesians 4:17-24; 1 John 5:18-19; Romans 8:31-39; 2 Corinthians 5:9; Galatians 5: For Personal Reflection and Group Sharing: 1. Is my life geared towards obeying God s will and making His Kingdom visible in my life? Or am I longing for something else riches, fame, pleasure, etc.? 2. Do I long to seek God s approval first rather than people s approval?

11 PRAYERWATCH - SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISE Fight the good fight 11 Well it is 10 years since I started writing a piece for the Chronicle and as we approach Christmas and the holiday period it is timely to consider this time of the year. Over the years the message for December and January has not changed but remains a call to stay focused on the things of God. Even recent prophetic word from Auckland has a warning for us as an extract shows. EAST AUCKLAND PROPHETIC WORD 02 DECEMBER 2012 The third Word was where the Lord said, My relationship with you is not based on times and seasons. My relationship with you is an eternal one not governed by the world s calendar. He said now that you are approaching holidays, do not confine Me to the shelf but that fervor and the daily fellowship with Him has to be an ongoing one and not governed by the calendar of this world. Shalini Saldanha As this is a time of the year we spend time with family and friends, are away from home and traveling more and perhaps are more relaxed our prayer life and time on the Watch can be interrupted. It is important to keep up our commitment to God and our brothers and sisters in the Lamb of God Community as Satan will not be on holiday but looking for an opportunity to attack. Some things to remember especially if we are away from home is to let those before and after us on the Watch know we will not be making contact. Our hour on the Watch may be interrupted by what is happening around us so I urge you to keep up the commitment at a more suitable time or at least use the Gap Dedication prayer on the sheet. As this is a time of the year we are away from home and traveling more and perhaps are more relaxed it is important to keep up the Covering prayer especially to protect our homes and to ensure our travel is safe and without problems. We need to be careful we are not giving the enemy an opening to affect our own life or our life in the Lamb of God, as we are counting on each other to keep up the spiritual protection. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Saviour, let us ponder the revelation of God s intervention in our lives with his saving grace and the power of the Holy Spirit as we live our lives radically for Jesus, our Commander and leader of this mighty Army. If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all.
