Romans 11 [33]: Oh the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgements, how inscrutable his ways In mid to late 2010 I was working hard at lifting my fitness levels to prepare for a challenging, for me, ice climb in the Southern Alps. This was to be a new level for me and I had decided to hire a professional guide for this particular climb. I had met the guide and talked through expectations, he had checked and approved my gear, and we were waiting for his call on the time window. Twice he put the climb date back due to snow conditions at altitude. And then Veronica and I had community building commitments in Malaysia. We returned to New Zealand 4 September but with our flight just three or four hours away from landing the pilot announced that a big earthquake had hit Christchurch and we would be diverted to Auckland. I sat there thinking that such an earthquake must have been big in order to close Christchurch Airport. And then I felt an unusual pressure in my chest. Veronica saw me rubbing the area and was emphatic that I should get it checked out with my doctor. This was the beginning of a lot of change in my life. The central city was in ruins, the Lamb of God Centre hall ceiling came down, many people needed help, and so my doctor s appointment did not happen for several weeks. But when it did within days I was diagnosed with thirteen arterial blockages, five of which were over 90% closed. And here I was, seemingly pretty fit for my age, active and training and climbing, and with no

2 2 apparent signs that trouble was imminent. But family genetics were at work I was a walking time-bomb. Yes, the ice climb was cancelled, and I learnt later the guide s inner city flat was destroyed. And I was wheeled in for open heart cardiac surgery on 8 December, five years ago next week. Apparently as I struggled back to consciousness following five or six hour s surgery, a doctor commented to Veronica that if I had attempted the ice climb they would have brought me down in a body bag, salutary indeed. This sudden brush with death, these new circumstances, would now surely change my life. But hold on - just seventy six days after surgery and about half way through the hospital s recovery plan for me, an even more devastating earthquake hit followed by thousands of aftershocks. This took away all options except to re-engage life and service once more with every bit of grit and determination in the wreckage that hit our home, our cluster, and the eastern suburbs. These things hit my life and changed my life five years ago. And now more change, with doubtless more challenge, is beginning - the change that the Western world calls retirement. The word itself is defined in quite a range by various dictionaries. For example Webster s say withdrawal from position or occupation or from active working life. Withdrawal? From activity? Well I think I have a problem with that because I gave my life to Jesus Christ many years ago. I did not give my life with qualification. I gave it, God willing, until my last breath. And so Veronica and I are talking a lot and endeavouring to be alert to feelings, leadings, cautions, ideas, Scripture, prayer and the wisdom of some good friends. Should the Lord kindly grant us appropriate health and many more years, who knows what He might have in store Your brother in the Lord Roger Senior Coordinator Lamb of God Community OUR PEOPLE Congratulations! To Henri and Cutie Zalamea [Central] with the arrival of their new granddaughter [pictured]. Bill and Jenny McElhinney [Blenheim] and: Peter and Stephanie [Nelson] are also new grandparents to their granddaughters! 3 NEWS AND ARTICLES 3 LEADERSHIP CHANGES NATIONAL AND AUCKLAND BRANCH The National Council meeting of 7 November voted in a new Senior Coordinator-Elect, Mark Challies of the Christchurch Branch, and Mark will take full responsibility in this position in one year s time, and for a five year term. At the same meeting the National Council approved a recommendation that Harry Lowe be appointed senior leader of the Auckland Branch, effective immediately, to replace Greg Hall who has decided to stand down from that particular role. Greg was sincerely thanked for his and Maryanne s faithful service over many years Roger. PERSONAL PROFILE MARK CHALLIES Hi my name is Mark Challies (born 1963), married to Kirsten (in 1992) with 4 children, Mikyla (22), Ambrose (20), Grace (17) and Jonathan (15). I thought it would be helpful for you know a bit about me so I have summarised aspects of my faith journey and involvement in the Lamb of God. Born and raised in the s in a small country town on the outskirts of Christchurch. My parents were committed to raising their family and serving in the parish and local town community, a wonderful example to me. My first experience of Charismatic renewal was an after school prayer group run by teachers from St Thomas s and Villa Maria. Through this Prayer Group I was introduced to the community. From here I will summarise briefly by decade. The 80 s saw my commitments to the Lamb of God both underway and covenant, involvement in Encounter Jesus (EJ), Oasis Camps and a year overseas living in the Servants of the Word (Brotherhood) in the Community in Ann Arbor, Michigan (and where the Sword of the Spirit community had its beginnings). I left for the time in the US with Glen Foley and we greatly enjoyed the fellowship of the brothers and teaching particularly the Psalms course delivered by Steve Clark. During that trip I visited 2 other communities: City of the Lord in Phoenix & LA and Alleluia in Augusta & New Orleans. It is so encouraging to see God at work in other communities and share the faith and enthusiasm of like-mind brothers and sisters in the Lord. There is nothing that compares with building relationships over Cornflakes. The 90 s commenced with the marriages of many of my friends in EJ, and my own marriage to Kirsten. Then devastatingly, our close friends, Glen, Louise and Steve were taken from us in a motor accident. It was a very impacting where many of us supporting each other in our grief within the community and especially Roger and Veronica. It challenged my thoughts towards certainty in life, the need to get to heaven and commitment to community. It was during the 90 s that I was appointed an Elder of the Christchurch branch, we celebrated the birth of our children (well one in 2000) and

4 4 purchased a house in the Burwood cluster. I served for 3 years in leading our Lamington making (fundraiser) before serving back in EJ which would later become Kairos. This involved leading youth in the local branch and running a South Island midyear camp Mid Winter V for 15 years. During this time I met and worked with many people from the Lamb of God branches in the South Island and the Light of Christ Community. There were many blessings in this service particularly watching God at work in people s lives and building of relationships with brothers and sisters in the Lord. In the 2000 s I continued to serve in Christchurch and in Kairos, joining the National Kairos Service Team. Later in the 2000 s I was invited to join the National Council. It would be remiss of me not to speak of the impact my wife and Roger and Veronica have had on my life. Kirsten grew up in similar circumstances to my own but in New Plymouth. Not long after finishing school she spend 18 months training and engaged in mission work in NZ, Malta Germany through ICPE (The International Catholic Programme of Evangelisation). On returning to New Plymouth she was encouraged to visit Christchurch to experience community life. She came and immediately entered fully into Community life forming strong relationships. Kirsten has been involved in the branch leadership locally and serving in our local parish for many years. She is incredibly faithful in prayer rising early each day and has been influenced recently by Ignatian prayer. She is a great listener and has pastored a number of the single young women. Roger and Veronica have been very instrumental in my faith journey. Not only their tireless and faithful example, but the care they have given myself, Kirsten and our family. Their pastoral wisdom has been very much appreciated as has their personal support. Roger has been strong in encouraging people to take on service and leadership roles and supporting their efforts. I know both myself and my family have been blest through the opportunities we have received. I look forward to serving the community and assisting each person to participate fully in our life. I look to the day when our future generations will take the community forward. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,[a] and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of[b] the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners,[c] so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. Hebrews 12:1(NRSV) God bless you. Mark C PERSONAL PROFILE HARRY LOWE Psalm 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him. The above verse is a short story of my life. I was stuck in a horrible pit of wounded emotions and confusion. I had learned to function in that pit, for it was what I knew. I had

5 5 no peace in my life. Life was not easy, and much of my energy was required to move in the mire. It was exhausting, but the idea of asking God for help did not occur to me. Now I have come to realise that the good Lord had been watching over me throughout my life. It was my own struggles and circumstances around me that prevented me from recognizing HIS presence. About 34 years ago, at a youth retreat I asked JESUS to become part of my life.and HE did. To this very day I treasure that decision. He lifted me out of that pit, setting me upon a rock. The rock of HIS love and salvation. My beloved wife Maureen and daughter Lukanne, together with my extended family migrated to Auckland - New Zealand in 1995 and at once were attracted to the life of the Lamb of God Christian Community. We have been members ever since. As I take on this new role as the branch senior leader of the community in Auckland, I thank all the members and my fellow elders for having the confidence in me. I know for certain that each member young and old have a great heart for community. This branch of the community has a dedicated team of Kairos leaders, Pastoral leaders, Women s leadership team and fellow elders who have journeyed together and joyfully served and continue to serve in various areas. It is wonderful to be part of such a loving and dedicated team of men and women who have kept their eyes fixed on the Lord and on HIS work. I choose to joyfully and obediently serve and be open to HIS Holy Spirit leading us forward. This is my humble prayer; a God who has put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise for all that he has done in my life. I want to be a vessel of honour, fit for the master s hand. Ready to carry the message of hope, to men all across this land. So revive my life, renew my vision. Prepare my heart for your purpose and your plan. Take me deeper into your presence and your power, that I may now glorify you in all that I do. Amen. God Bless, Harry Lowe UPDATE FROM ALEPPO, SYRIA- EMMANUEL COMMUNITY Many people have asked how our brothers and sisters in Syria are doing in the midst of the war there. This report is from Jean Barbara, President of the Sword of the Spirit and regional missionary coordinator for the Emmanuel Community The Emmanuel Community in Aleppo, where about 85 of our brothers and sisters live, continues to survive, build community life and carry out evangelization under very challenging circumstances. Notwithstanding shortages, immediate security threats, economic hardships, lack of employment and loss of young people due to emigration, the members keep inspiring us by their great faith. When their courage wanes it is the knowledge that we are standing with them that upholds their determination. Communities in the Sword of the Spirit and in some instances outside of it are helping by prayers and materially. Help goes a long way toward food and clean water, as well as shelter and heating. Many of you have asked how you can support and even give

6 6 financially. Because normal channels are non-existent the best way is to go through the People of God in Lebanon; contact my assistant, Danielle Younan at AUCKLAND BRANCH UPDATES It was an emotional General Community Gathering this month when the Senior Branch Leader, Greg Hall stepped down and handed over to Harry Lowe, our new Senior Branch Leader. Greg Hall has led the Auckland Branch for over 25 years. No words of thanks would ever be sufficient to express our gratitude to Greg for his many years of selfless commitment to the Auckland Branch. Greg and Maryanne Hall have been true evangelists in spirit and in word outreaching to members and the wider community. God bless you both. To lead the Branch on its onward journey, another man of God, a man filled with the Holy Spirit, Harry Lowe. How fitting it is that the Branch spent the month learning more about the Letters of St. Peter. Both Greg and Harry have exhorted us to heed the call to holy living as St. Peter asks us to. Prepare your minds for action, discipline yourselves, set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed 1 Peter 13. Thank you to our Pastoral Cell Group leaders who gave us these talks. Greg and Harry, May grace and peace be yours in full measure through your knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 1 Peter 1:2 PHOTOS HART PRAYER MEETING IN FIJI [ROGER S RECENT VISIT]

10 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Growing Old with Grace, Staying Young in Spirit December So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. [2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV] Life is like pages of a book we read. It passes by quickly. We count the passing of time by celebrating events like New Year s days, birthdays and anniversaries. Our bodies age; we get sick more often [or get new ailments] and we recover slower; we forget more often; our hair turns gray and they fall. We cannot play sports as we used to. No one has beaten father time yet, so all of us grow old. One day, the consequence of our sinful nature will take its final toll through physical death. But in a way, those in Jesus also stay young our inner self is being renewed day by day by the Spirit of God. So when you look at a mirror, look at two people see the physical one getting old, but also the spiritual one remaining young and being renewed daily. How can you really measure the age of someone who will live eternally? So How Do You Grow Old in Grace and Stay Young in Spirit? 1. As the older you get, you may lose more of your physical abilities, but you gain more wisdom. Make sure your life is guided by Godly wisdom and you pass on this wisdom to your families and loved ones. 2. Be realistic - accept your life stage. You need to be open to changing the habits you have been used to all your life. Your priorities will also change. Pray and seek wisdom which changes you will need to accept and what things you retain. Expect your relationships will also change, especially those closest to you. 3. Bear fruit even in old age! You have more time to read God s word and pray for those who need prayers. As you have more time, serve others. Visit friends and families more often. The key to being fruitful in old age is love do the loving thing. Imagine Jesus living in you how would He love? 4. Look back at your life and see what mistakes you can still correct while there is time. Seek to reconcile with God or with others as you can; if this is not possible, release yourself free from any hurts or anger by forgiving in the Spirit. Do what you can while you still can do not wait for tomorrow. 5. Enjoy life. Be thankful for what God has blessed you with. Count each day as a blessing and an opportunity to bless God. Smell the flowers. Enjoy your relationships. Have fun even in old age! 6. Surrender your feelings, sufferings, disappointments, challenges, aches and pains to God. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. [2 Corinthians 4:17-18] 7. Long for heaven. Make sure you are ready to go anytime. Have a last will and testament for the people you will leave behind. Know that the best is yet to come no more mourning, crying or pain soon. Look forward when your mortal body will become immortal and when you see God face to face. OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him." [1 Corinthians 2:9] 2. even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. [Isaiah 46:4] 3. So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. [Psalms 90:12] 4. Other references: Job 12:12; Psalms 71:18; Psalm 92:12-15 and Revelations 21:3-4.. FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION OR GROUP SHARING: 1. In what ways have you recently experienced that the Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak? 2. What legacy do you want to leave your children, family, and friends with? 3. Do you long for heaven and imagine what life would be with God forever?

14 14 At the recent National Council meeting in Christchurch we were addressed by Kirsten Challies who had attended a meeting of the Sword of the Spirit s International Women s Coordinating Committee [IWCC] in the USA. Kirsten started by showing us a beach scene, something we will see particularly over coming months or if we watch Piha Rescue on TV. Some beaches have areas that are safe to swim marked by flags while outside the flags it is dangerous to swim because of rips and other dangers such as sharks. The above scene we can relate to our walk as Christians as we need to be living between the flags being involved in Lamb of God community and our parish life. Between the flags we need to be reading and studying the Word of God, spending time in prayer and fellowshipping within our support and pastoral groups. Outside the flags we have many different currents, rips and other dangers such as things mentioned by Kirsten in her report from the IWCC. The IWCC had looked at issues and trends in the world today that will affect our life as a Christian Community and how we should respond to them. The issues raised were: 1. Gender Who am I? Legislation and media are problems. 2. The Me current, we seek to fulfill ourselves seeking wealth, fun and pleasure. 3. There is no Truth, we believe what we see or touch. 4. There is no God, if this is the case then we can do what, how or when we like and there are no consequences. No natural laws. 5. Virtual Reality, addictions, immodesty, short attention span, importance of Facebook etc. This is a very brief statement of what is happening in the world today and the types of rips and dangers we find outside of the flags, the reason we swim between the flags and live among God s people in Christian Community. The reason God s has raised up covenant community to be a refuge between the flags, a bulwark around the world, a safe haven with a special way of life protecting us and our families from evil currents. We need to know the evils we face so we need to be aware of what is happening outside the flags, outside the way of life of Christian communities and know how to respond. This is why the Lamb of God has the Prayerwatch where we pray against the evil forces that attack as we live out God s call on our life, why we should take our place patrolling around the Lamb of God. Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on! If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all. Alan McKenzie.
