A lot of flying as some of these trips have had as many as fifteen sectors. However Flight Set number 41 remains as the most memorable, the scariest, the most revealing in observing reactions under stress. That August/September trip took me to the United States, then to London but my return flights from London via Los Angeles to Auckland then Christchurch were severally disrupted when the Twin Towers went down with such big loss of life. I was on a Boeing 777 direct flight from London to LAX which was to the west of New York City when Tower One was hit. Remarkably the pilot allowed capable cell phone use for those with relatives in the States to call them. A man close to me spoke to relatives on the Jersey Shore who were watching CNN live. He switched the call to conference mode and those close by could hear the CNN reports live. Then Tower Two was hit and the pilot warned passengers to brace for an increase in power and g-force. He then declared we are out of here as the aircraft climbed rapidly and turned to the west. We were redirected to Calgary, Canada, where apparently over two hundred big jets were redirected out of US airspace. Then started five or six stress filled days before I got back into LAX on one of the first flights allowed back into US airspace. Then a few days later, from a backlog of near 6,000 wait-listed, I managed to get on a longhaul to the Pacific. The stress I experienced, and saw, is quite another story.

2 2 This set of flights is still vivid in my memory for two other reasons. But I am NOT relating these to the Twin Towers incidents. The first was the impact in seeing a message printed on the back of a white tee shirt worn by a lady as we boarded the flight from Auckland to Los Angeles. The lady was part of a group who, by their dress, seemed to be part of a religious sect. The message was from Revelations 19 [15] Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which he will strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron sceptre. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. In following years I often thought about that day, the dramatic impact of the Scripture, and who was this girl? Where was this girl? Who were those people? The second impact was from the many times I read and re-read the context Scripture being, Revelations 19 [11-16] I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron sceptre. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Some months later I left the Burwood Cluster early morning to talk to the Lord about a few major issues on my mind. I walked along the Avon River, close to where Peter Pieter s home used to be. I know the place exactly. Revelations 19 came to mind and I declared the Scripture. Then I cried out to the skies Lord, I need to see that White Horse, that Rider, right now and wham there it was, and I will never forget the sight. The horse was indeed a Battle Horse of immense size, seemingly several hundred metres tall into a swirling mist. And only the lower body and left thigh of the Rider were visible, boot into stirrup. The left arm held a battle sword high through into cloud. The impression was of awesome and aggressive power, impatient to be at war, focussed and ready. That vision, that reality, stays with me now in these challenging times. Last week Catholic Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City [where a Satanic Mass was held in 2014 and another this year] was reflecting on gender matters and he said gender ideology is the next tsunami that threatens to sweep away centuries of accepted human wisdom about complementarity and real differences between men and women. As with every ideology this one asserts itself as beyond dispute and absolute. It envisions a brave new world in which the creature asserts himself as creator of his own reality. This is demonic. The Archbishop closed I am not an alarmist, but it seems to me that battle lines are being drawn very clear, and these lines are about more than government overreach. This is a spiritual battle between Light and darkness. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. May God bless and protect such a man. And again I see my vision and again I sense the impression of the awesome and aggressive power, impatient to be at war, focussed and ready. Amen. Your brother Roger Senior Coordinator Lamb of God Community

3 NEWS AND ARTICLES 3 INTERNATIONAL COORDINATORS MEETING USA The International Coordinators Meeting (ICM) was held from 27 to 30 May 2016 in Michigan, Detroit USA. Present were nearly 400 coordinators from across the Sword of the Spirit [SOS] and other young leaders; also invited were ordained clergy who are community members or who have a formal role for a SOS member community. The theme was Pastoring the Pastors and the scriptural focus was 1 Peter 2:9 You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Each of the 4 morning sessions focused on a topic: holiness, unity, spiritual warfare, and mission; and each day had a time of worship, a scriptural meditation, a talk and a personal testimony. The afternoons featured a President s Address from Jean Barbara, presentations on ecumenical unity and church relations, presentations on leadership succession planning and raising up younger leaders, and on the final day a selection of workshops on sharpening prayer meeting leadership, mentoring younger men for mission leadership, understanding and working with transitional adults, and current issues in gender and sexuality. Three of the evenings had prayer meetings, with times to seek the Lord, to pray for one another, and to share reflections from the time. On Saturday evening we celebrated the opening of the Lord s Day, and witnessed six communities signing the covenant of membership of the Sword of the Spirit as Full Members: Jerusalem (Belgium), Buhing Pulong (Malaybalay, Philippines), Illuminator s Lamp (Beirut, Lebanon), Incienso de Dios (Xalapa, Mexico), Emmanuel (Cali, Colombia), and Cuerpo de Cristo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). There are now 34 Full Member communities in the Sword of the Spirit. The ICM was followed by a two-day Kairos Leadership Conference involving around 150 leaders who work with youth, university-aged people and young professionals. From the Lamb of God Community, three coordinators attended the ICM Incoming Senior Coordinator Mark Challies [Christchurch], Harry Lowe [Auckland] and Tom Caballes [Wellington]. Here are some of their sharings and reflections:

4 4 This is my first time at an International Coordinators Meeting and my second time in Michigan, having previously spent a year in Ann Arbor 27 years ago with the Servants of the Word. Firstly, what a blessing to catch up with brothers from my previous time here. It is a great bond of unity being part of the Sword of the Spirit and a joy to see faithful brothers still committed to our life. A joy also to spend time with brothers who have visited New Zealand over the years and been part of the Lamb of God s journey. In terms of the conference the worship times were excellent, the teachings, life-giving and the sharing group I participated in very honest and supportive. What will I take away from it (other than too many extra pounds ), the encouragement of time with brothers travelling the same journey, refreshment for my spirit and an inspiration to be more effective in evangelism. Thank you to all those who served selflessly to enable this conference to run so smoothly. God Bless. Mark Challies What has this ICM done for me? It has given me a new hope, a new zeal and a new vision. I am convinced that ecumenism is something we all need to be open to and embrace. We may feel we are small in little New Zealand, but the Lord is raising a people like us across the world with the same passion to live in communities. It has helped me see the bigger picture. All the four sessions on Holiness, Unity, Spiritual Warfare and Mission helped me to focus personally on my calling in serving the Lord more faithfully. I have come back with some ideas and thoughts for our branch in Auckland that will help us improve our way of life and live more fully our commitment and calling to this community of the Lamb of God. I pray for the organising team and all those that put together and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this ICM a total success. God Bless. Harry Lowe It was such an honour and blessing to come and attend the 2016 International Coordinators Meeting here in Michigan. It was fabulous to see the great cloud of witness in our work in the Sword of the Spirit. Sometimes I get discouraged thinking how small, isolated and insignificant the work we do in New Zealand. But seeing and being part of the Army of God in a very real way through prayer, worship, fellowship, playing sports, teaching and sharing opened my eyes to see the significant role we have in doing our part in building his Kingdom here on earth. I had a great time building terrific camaraderie and brotherhood with my brothers in arms and co-workers in the Lord s vineyard.

5 God spoke to me strongly in three areas: the first area is the unity God wants for his people and how much I should strive for building and maintaining unity at all levels in my personal life, and in my work and service. The second area that God showed me where I can grow more is in doing spiritual warfare. Lastly, God revealed me how blessed and fortunate that I am in the midst, and at the cutting edge, of a work of ecumenism which the Lord is doing among his people at this time and age. Indeed, I now appreciate more the time I live in where I can see God s amazing grace in action. Ironically, it felt both like an oasis in the desert and a dry ember being set on fire being refreshed and restored spiritually but also being convicted to act and move at the same time. God is truly good! Tom Caballes AUCKLAND NEWS Honouring our royalty. Auckland Community members gathered together, with a cheer in their hearts to felicitate their royal members, their brothers and sisters aged 60 years and over. Appropriately the colour theme of the evening was purple and yellow, colours which signify royalty. Dwayne Lobo who was one of the main organisers of this event, tells us of how the youth members of the Auckland Branch helped to bring about this intergenerational time of Community fellowship. Nicole Lim and I were asked to emcee the event, which was an honour, especially because it was with the purpose of honouring our 60+ members who mean so much to us. Our Community has a strong number of brothers and sisters over 60 years of age. They have contributed in knowledge, experience and wisdom to the value of the Community, and during this Lord s Day Gathering, we wanted to reflect on this and be thankful for their presence in Community life. 5 The evening commenced with the Lord s Day Meal from which we moved on to entertainment. Many of the youth were involved in planning games and team activities for the celebration, with a focus on getting to know our 60+ members better. Some of these games involved a quiz, where teams had to guess who a photo or an interesting fact belonged to. Other youth also assisted with organizing honouring letters, which were written by the families of the over 60 members, and presented to them along with a cupcake as they were seated for the Lord s Day. Some youth gave honouring speeches after the Lord s Day celebration. A large cake was cut, as part of the festivities. There was also a shared dinner and dancing, to conclude the evening. Overall, the night was a lot of fun for the whole Community, and from feedback received, we heard that the 60+ members really had a good time.

6 6 Wisdom is with the aged and understanding in length of days. Job 12:12 WELLINGTON BRANCH MEN S AND WOMEN S RETREATS Around 19 women attended the women s retreat at the Silverstream Retreat Centre on 5 June The retreat was an opportunity to connect and grow deeper in our understanding of the Lord and of one another. We also had time for entertainment presented by the ladies themselves, which was hilarious and absolute fun, where originality and talent were in abundance. Here are some reflections of those who attended: The first weekend of June I attended the Wellington Women's Retreat. The retreat s theme was 'Lead Me Home'. The teachings for the weekend included the particular Call and History of the Lamb of God. I personally had a very blessed and wonderful time, and as well as ministering, I felt personally very blessed. Lots of prayer and lots of fun and laughter, with lots of blessings. Well done Wellington sisters... Veronica Foley For me, the Wellington women's retreat was a rejuvenating and refreshing experience. This message, which was mentioned in the talks, is one that I will always remember - "If you have everything you have ever wanted come true - the career of your dreams for example - will you be content? Will you still be restless? Will you be home? Only God's love will lead us home. If your heart is with God, you are already home." Nicole Lim-Kwan [The retreat was] an opportunity to spend time to reflect on our walk with the Lord, how He has consistently shown His love for us in the past and how He is constantly with us now as we face our current anxieties. The talks then challenged us to live a future life that is more like God. This topic 'Lead Me Home' is very timely given the many modern day evil attractions we deal with day to day. Lisa Blanch Last year, the men s retreat was about being soldiers for Christ Bond of Brothers. This year, the retreat discusses about being athletes. The Theme was Run the Race with Endurance to the End based from Hebrews 12:1-2. Fourteen men gathered for the retreat and the talks compared our walk with God to running a marathon - with what the race is about, its rules, its obstacles, the need to endure, the grace needed to finish the race and the prize at the end of the race. Andre Geelen from Napier came and gave the first talk, and Tom Caballes led the 2 nd session. OG Gueco hosted a trivia gave in the afternoon. The men s retreat ended with ministry time for the brothers to pray for each other s needs.

7 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Fragile Living - July For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. [Hebrews 13:14 ESV] I recently broke a very useful kitchen tool by mishandling it it fell, and the plastic part of it shattered. I thought I could easily find a replacement for the broken part, but no the tool was obsolete and no replacement parts were available. It was a valuable device one moment and a useless piece of junk the next. If I had known it was fragile, I would have taken better care of it. Now, if you really think of it, the lives that we live are fragile like that gadget like glass, crystal and fine china. They can be here one day and gone the next. The same is true with our families and relationships. We live with an illusion that everything is just fine and dandy. The truth is, all of us live on borrowed time and a disease, accident or something else can end our fragile lives and relationships in a moment. If you know you are living a fragile life, would you care better for it? How? So How Do You Live a Fragile Life? 1. Take good care of your physical body your body needs regular exercise for it to work well. You need to habitually relax and rest your body, mind and soul. Take time for holidays and to celebrate special occasions in your life and those close to you. Develop good hobbies too they help you relax your mind and soul. 2. Take good care of your spiritual self you need to take spiritual nourishment through prayer, teaching and reading the Word of God. Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. [1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV]. Develop good and holy habits and grow in becoming more like Jesus more loving, patient, joyful, selfcontrolled, etc. day by day. Take time during the year to have a personal retreat. Seek God in all situations. 3. Make the most out of your relationships do not take people, especially those close to you, for granted. Make sure you love them, appreciate them and make peace with them. You will never know when your fragile life or theirs will come to an end. As much as you can, try to live with peace with everyone around you. 4. Forgive and let go of the past. This is probably the hardest thing to do but is also the most important one in living a fragile life. Do not let any root of bitterness, resentment or anger fester in your heart. These things can affect our physical well-being but more so our spiritual well-being. Jesus clearly said, So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." [Matthew 18:35 ESV] 5. Live a life with no regret. This is not about carefree, careless, foolish you only live once things rather, these are major life decisions you would not want to be ashamed of in the future. If you already have some mistakes and regrets in life, do not add to them but rather correct them if you can. See if you reclaim those things. Live a fully abundant life that Jesus came for [John 10:10]. One day, when your fragile life comes to its conclusion, [and it will!] may you hear these words: Well done, my good and faithful servant. [Matthew 25:21 ESV] OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. [1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV] 2. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. [1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV] 3. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. [James 4:14 ESV] 4. Other references: 2 Timothy 4:6-8; Romans 12:1-2; Hebrews 12:1-2; Philippians 3:20. FOR REFLECTION OR SHARING: 1. What do I need to do to take better care of my fragile life? Who do I need to reconcile with? What do I need to do to have greater peace in my relationships, especially those close to me? 2. Are there areas in my life that I have been careless in the past? Have I thought of living with a motto: Fragile Life Handle with Care?

Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry out his purpose, Jeremiah 51: 12 NIV CHARACTISTICS OF SOLDIERS OF CHRIST Over the last few months I have looked at the role of soldiers in the Old Testament mainly in battles where faith in God our Father was important and often dictated the outcome as larger, overwhelming armies were overcome by smaller armies. With no battles in the New Testament the role of soldiers changed with soldiers being present at important times but also being used as a model of the Christian life particularly by Paul. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs he wants to please his commanding officer. (2 Timothy 2: 1, 3-4) These words of Paul s to Timothy apply just as much today as they did to Timothy 2000 years ago. The distractions of the world such as long work hours and time travelling, sport, other attractive things to do, travel to exotic places constantly challenge our commitment to our call to be a community of disciples on mission. The immorality and spiritual immaturity of today s society is a constant temptation for the believer who is a new creation in Jesus Christ and should be different from the world. We must live Christ centered blameless, disciplined, loving lives that make a difference for God. The costs of discipleship and the price of being a soldier are seldom mentioned today. The world s emphasis on self-centeredness in all endeavours and on monetary success, combined with easy access to entertainment through various media outlets can prevent us from satisfying our commanding officer. Many of the attributes of a good soldier, like discipline, commitment, sacrifice, service and self-control are less prized in today s society. Over the

11 11 coming months we will look at these unpopular characteristics in more detail; specifically how they apply to us as Christian soldiers. Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on!
