Each year, I listen to the Christmas story and reflect on the cribs and pictures of the Christmas events I can t help thanking God for the Three Kings. I have tended to view them as my representatives at the 1st coming of Jesus. Sound weird? Out-of-towners are bringing gifts prophesied by the prophets (Isaiah 60:6), recognising our part in God s plan of salvation. Galatians 3:14 He (God) redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. As a gentile, the birth of Jesus has opened up a new relationship with God, and I certainly experience that. Since giving my life to the Lord, I can certainly relate to the passage in Ezekiel 36: A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. It was like moving from a black and white movie to full colour. We are indeed blessed to be receiving such a relationship with God that was impossible before Jesus s coming. I often reflect on the blessing to live in such a time in the world s history and not take the experience of a personal relationship with God for granted. The time of when I initially committed my life to the Lord was brought to the surface in my memory recently, (I m not sure why it shouldn t have been right at the forefront). Darren Humphries was leading the gathering and asked for people to give their 3-minute testimony. Of course, we in Christchurch have a slight English reserve, but that did not stop an enthusiastic Darren recruiting three people. During that time of volunteering I quickly tried to squash together some key points,

2 2 but by the time I had the 3-minute version, we had our recruits. Those who did share inspired me, and as they shared, I found myself reflecting on many similar experiences or feelings that they encountered. It seemed to bring back memories and revived my desire to share my faith. How did you experience God when you were first called? How did God s love change you? What would your 3 minutes testimony be? It is a joy to think of the gift that we have received this Christmas. More than we could ever ask or deserve; transforming, healing, empowering I find Christmas and the following time great for spending more time with God. This year I hope to have the chance to tell others of this wonderful gift. I hope that I will have a part in helping someone move into technicolour. The experience of what we receive here is just a pale image of what we are to enter into 1 Corinthians 13: 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. Heaven is the place I hope to spend eternity, and I hope I can assist many others to get there. God bless you and may you have a great Christmas. Mark Challies Note all Bible verses used are from the NRSV NEWS AND ARTICLES PROGRESS LAMB OF GOD CENTRE The Lamb of God Centre is a go! Construction will start soon and hopefully finish at the end of next year. Here are some draft sketches of how the new Lamb of God Centre will possibly look like. Exciting!

3 3 UPDATES WITH NATALIE TAN AUCKLAND BRANCH Greetings from London! I want to thank you all for you love, support and prayers! Our God is a faithful God that always comes through. Having been in London for about four months, I thought it might be a good idea to update you all on my mission year. I am a youth worker with 11 to 18-year-olds. I have four services: Antioch Youth, the community youth similar to our Encounter Jesus; The Living Room, an outreach of the local Baptist church; Twyford, a Church of England school, my role is currently serving once a week at a junior lunchtime group with year 7, 8 and 9 students; and YouthLink. My main service is with YouthLink; this is the outreach of Antioch Youth. We run events on Fridays starting after school with an Open Space, this is a place where youth year 8 and up can come and do homework or play games, and we finish the time by eating together as a family. Following that we start our main events which run from 7:30-9:30 pm. This time usually involves games, some input, teaching, and really good worship. YouthLink is just a safe environment for the youth to bring friends and practice evangelism. This term we have been focusing on revival, and it has been amazing to see just how hungry the youth are to meet the Lord! Out of YouthLink we also run retreats and camps. Recently we ran the YES Retreat which brought roughly 55 youth together from Dublin, Ireland and Scotland and four youth from Madrid. It was a blessed three days together as I served along 30 other staff members including gappers from other locations.

4 4 The other part of my service is with the University Christian Outreach, Koinonia. This service includes running weekly coffee stalls in central London, helping with the Reloads (our weekly Thursday meeting), and follow-ups. I am also part of a team which plans and executes relational evangelism events such as American Thanksgiving dinner or games and movie nights. This part of my service has reminded me of the amazing ability we have, to bring people together and show the people around us what it means to have deeper, meaningful relationships and a sense of community. The number of times we are rejected at coffee stall are worth it even if we only have one or two good conversations or make one person s day. For me, it s about being present and available to serve our city and community. Coming back to London this time, it has become real to me how in many big cities you can be surrounded by people yet so lonely at the same time. I am blessed to be staying in the cluster with Hugh and Mercy Potter and their daughters Catherine and Elizabeth. They are a committed family within the Antioch community, and they clearly demonstrate to me what it is to live the community way of life. Not knowing what I was signing up for regarding service and accommodation when first arriving in London was a leap of faith but it was made somewhat easy knowing that it was in the Lord s hands. Coming to a Sword of the Spirit community has been like coming to the family. There are many aspects of life here that are similar to that of New Zealand, both joys and challenges. Looking back, I find it rather humorous that some of the things I tried to escape from in New Zealand are in essence the same things that I am encountering here in London. It reminds me that we all have a Jonah and that we can never really escape from God. It leave us with no choice but to give it all to God and lean on Him for all things. This is something that I am beginning to learn and practice. To know that I don t have to be perfect or in control, because my God is. Because when I yield to my Father in Heaven, He supports, strengthens, equips and makes a way. God has been so good to me, and I have seen myself grow in small things like confidence and the grace to be patient. I m so excited knowing that this is just one step to going higher up and deeper in with Him! Blessings, especially during this festive season. Natalie Tan CELEBRATION IN ASHBURTON A surprise party evening was held at our Ashburton Lamb of God meeting 17 Nov 2016 to honour Anne and Donald Hooper who kept our group going during a difficult year for some of our members. It was a double celebration as Anne s birthday was around that time, and we all enjoyed the food, fun, and fellowship. Absent was our very gifted member Annette Fletcher who put together a beautiful bouquet for Anne, which was presented by Bronwyn Harborne. All contributions to the evening were much appreciated. Here s to a great 2017! Ashburton Celebrations

5 NEWS FROM THE AUCKLAND BRANCH 5 It's busy everywhere this time of year and the Auckland Branch has been busy. The Auckland Branch had two major events. The first was the honouring of those who have served the Auckland Branch in Pastoral and a few individual service contributions to the community were acknowledged on a night that was clearly organized with a lot of thought in mind. There were games, and yummy food and each family present got a gift hand made by Carol D Souza. What struck me the most was the thoughtfulness and love of the organizers for all those who were being honoured that night. To the organisers, Carol & Lionel D Souza, Maureen & Harry and Patrick & Michelle Amaral, thank you for a truly lovely and special time. The very next day, the Auckland branch had its last General Community Gathering for this year. We were blest to have the Mother of Divine Mercy Women s Refuge Centre come and spend time with us. They shared their stories of hardship and how God worked miracles in their lives. Some were hard-hitting and heart-breaking to hear. Fellowship and fun soon followed along with some singing and dancing put on by this group. It was truly an evening to remember. As the year comes to an end, a word of thanks to our Elders, our Pastoral Team Leaders, Kairos team and our Women s Leadership Team. God Bless you and your families for your service to all of us in the Branch. Merry Christmas and best wishes for CENTRAL REGION ANNUAL REGIONAL GATHERING The Central Region held its annual gathering during the last week of November in Palmerston North. Ludeth Mariposa [Wellington branch] shares her personal reflection on what she learned during the gathering: This year s Central Region Annual Gathering focused on our call to holiness. I ve heard talks like these in the past but hearing them again in a different way and focus, resonated in me differently. Andre s talk was about Living Ordinary Lives Extraordinarily and Tom s talk was about Seeing, Loving, and Following God More. We now live in a time when our faith is often challenged, more recently with the redefinition of marriage and petitions for

6 6 euthanasia. I feel sad that Christianity is declining. However, this also calls us to deepen our faith further and be more active in reaching out. I guess the challenge for me is how to do these. Prayer and Scriptures came to mind. I ve been a Christian since I was in my teens and years of Christian living can sometimes get me jaded. I have to rekindle the fervour in some way. I have to seek God more in my life. I learned from Andre that no matter how evil the ways of men are, if we remain faithful and obedient to God, we will find favour in Him. How about reaching out? We can begin small. As Tom quoted St Teresa of Calcutta, What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family. It is in the basic things in life including the people closest to us -- where we can make a difference. We don t have to look too far. MATIU/SOMES ISLAND LAMB OF GOD WELLINGTON BRANCH The Lamb of God Wellington branch, a week after the Central Region Gathering in Palmerston North, went to Matiu/Somes Island to have picnic and Christmas celebrations there. It was not sunny, but it did not rain as well. Great times!

7 7 September 2016 National Mission Appeal 2016 For Our International and National Mission Work Throughout the Sword of the Spirit, the international community of communities to which we belong, individual members of the communities is encouraged to contribute to an Annual Appeal to assist with the high costs of Mission and Community Building work. The Lamb of God has decided to maintain the National Mission Appeal [formerly known as Winter Appeal] as our means to encourage members and friends to be generous in supporting our ability to continue and expand mission work in the Pacific and here in New Zealand. We enjoy a land of plenty, despite what some are calling times of recession. We do have adequate infrastructure, access to clean water, little pollution, and homes full of many modern conveniences. Many people worldwide with whom the Sword of the Spirit works struggle for the very basics. But they love the Lord, and they are his people as much as are we. As well as throughout New Zealand, the Lamb of God works particularly in the Fiji Islands, Australia and in parts of Asia and our work is growing. You can talk with any of our young people who have participated in our Mission Teams. Mission work does impact and change lives in both ways. We now work with many groups in Fiji, and we have established a new community in Nadi. The Fijian economy is under stress, and even breakfast cereals we are familiar with can cost as much as F$14-16 a box in a Nadi Supermarket. Most of the people with whom we work in Fiji would earn less than F$4.00 an hour. The environment is challenging. Will you please consider a donation to our work? Enclosed is a prepaid reply envelope. Cheques should be made payable to the Lamb of God. You can also donate online: BNZ Chch Branch, Account Name: Lamb of God; Number If you donate online, please inform Tom Caballes, our National Senior Administrator, by phone or [ ; josethomascaballes@gmail.com], regarding the amount and date so he can trace it, and receipts will be given accordingly at the end of the tax year. 8 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Desiring and Achieving Unity - January I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV) Because of our fallen human nature, we are inherently selfish, self-centred and me first orientated with others. It is easier to be at war rather than be at peace with others in our marriages, families, communities and churches. In fact, it takes a lot of hard work and effort to achieve and maintain unity among us. We see the effects of disunity in our world divorce, family rivalries, community cliques, and church disunion. But God, who exhibits perfect unity in the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, desires that we achieve unity. God is deeply saddened when we let disunity divide us and tear us apart. We damage our families, friendships, relationships, churches, and communities when we let disunity fester among us. So How Do You Act to Achieve Unity in Your Marriage, Family, Community, and Church? 1. Think us, not you and me. It means you think of and consider what is the best for the body, not just what is good for you. Consider other people s point of view too. Be willing to submit to the decision of others, especially if the matter is not too critical. It is good to deny yourself at times. 2. Try to achieve a win-win situation or at least a compromise. Look at all possible alternatives that would be beneficial for all parties concerned. If this is not possible, try to target a compromise agreement or decision wherein both parties give and take to achieve an acceptable decision for all concerned. 3. Be Christ-like in your thinking and your actions. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV) God wants us to be loving, peaceful, patient, kind, gentle and self-controlled in the body. 4. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. (1 Corinthians 12:14 ESV) You should think that you are a critical part of one another your marriage, family, community or church. Each of us has a role to play; we need each other. We should look for the good of each other. Look for the common good. 5. Know and appreciate the diversity does not necessarily mean disunity. We are all different having different upbringing, culture, history, talents and abilities and so on. In spite of being different, it is realistic to aim for and achieve unity. Be willing to work hard to aim for and achieve unity. 6. It is love, then, that you should strive for. (1 Corinthians 14:1A GNB) When our goal is to love, unity should be attainable. So in your marriage, family, community or church, the key is to strive to love and do the loving thing. When we become more loving and less selfish, unity becomes an achievable goal. OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 ESV) 2. Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. (1 Peter 3:8 ESV) 3. I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. (1 Corinthians 1:10 ESV) 4. Other references: Psalm 133:1-3; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; and Philippians 2:1-3. FOR REFLECTION OR SHARING: 1. Am I an initiator, source, and maintainer of unity in my marriage, family, community, and the church? 2. What can I do to achieve greater unity in all my relationships, including at work or school?

Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry out his purpose, Jeremiah 51: 12 NIV As another year has flown by and we look back at what has happened, we need to realize the importance of Jesus in our lives. Looking at what is happening in the world, we see Satan is alive and kicking hard as he deceives many people to turn their backs to God s way of life. As we approach the celebration of the birth of our Saviour and Redeemer. The one who we join ourselves to as we live this call on our lives as a community of disciples on mission. This time of the year can be a busy time as we prepare to celebrate and also prepare for the summer holidays, so it is timely to reflect on how Satan will see this period as a time to attack us. This year at our Gathering over the past few months we have seen

12 12 an increase of Prophetic word encouraging us to spiritual warfare and to fight the good fight using the weapons God has given us and to go forth in his strength. January is a time when our young people gather in Christchurch for teaching, formation, worship and recreation. We need to pray that our young people will be blessed as they gather for Summer Oasis and the Men s and Woman s Households. That all leaders and teachers will be well prepared and all serving in any way will have an enjoyable and blessed time. As this is a time of the year we spend time with family and friends, are away from home and traveling more and perhaps are more relaxed our prayer life and time on the Watch can be interrupted. It is important to keep up our commitment to God and our brothers and sisters in the Lamb of God community as Satan will not be on holiday but looking for an opportunity to attack. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5: 8-9 Some things to remember, especially if we are away from home, is to let those before and after us on the Prayerwatch know we will not be making contact or we can organize to pass the Watch by text message. Our hour on the Watch may be interrupted by what is happening around us, so I urge you to keep up the commitment at a more suitable time or at least use the Gap Dedication prayer on the sheet. It is important to keep up the Covering prayer especially to protect our homes and to ensure our travel is safe and without problems. We need to be careful we are not giving the enemy an opening to affect our life or our life in the Lamb of God, as we are counting on each other to keep up the spiritual wall that protects our way of life. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Saviour, let us ponder the revelation of God s intervention in our lives with his saving grace and the power of the Holy Spirit as we live our lives radically for Jesus, our Commander and Leader of this mighty Army. Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on! If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch, then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all.
