In July an Australian judge from the District Court of New South Wales was quoted in various newspapers as saying that incest may no longer be a taboo and that the community may now accept consensual sex between adult siblings. He likened incest to homosexuality, which was once regarded as criminal and "unnatural" but is now widely accepted. He said incest was now only a crime because it may lead to abnormalities in offspring but this rationale was increasingly irrelevant because of the availability of contraception and abortion. Then he also is quoted as saying a jury might find nothing untoward in the advance of a brother towards his sister once she had sexually matured, had sexual relationships with other men and was now 'available', not having a sexual partner. If this was the 1950s and you had a jury of 12 men there, which is what you'd invariably have, they would say it's unnatural for a man to be interested in another man or a man being interested in a boy. Those things have gone. These comments were made during the trial of a brother charged with raping his younger sister. His comments were, thankfully, labelled as completely disgraceful by the crown prosecutor, who then asked an appeal court to appoint another judge. The crown prosecutor then added that the reference to abortion was particularly repellent, and she said incest was horrific, regardless of the ages of those involved, saying The relational betrayal of the horrors of incest between a brother and sister of any age is abhorrently criminal. Thankfully the New South Wales Attorney General has now referred the judge in question to the Judicial Commission and called for him to be removed from overseeing any criminal trials. Recently I gave a talk in Fiji entitled The Agenda is indeed Gender. The talk was designed to point to how rapidly our long held and traditional Christian understanding of family, marriage, beliefs, and basic values and morality is being eroded. That was just

2 2 seven short weeks ago. And now we see further erosion endeavours of what we would hold as basic morality and basic values. It is like a tsunami of erosion, pouring in week after week, and in places rapidly taking out family values we hold as foundational in our various covenant communities. What can we do? What have I attempted to do as I seek the Lord in the early hours of each day? I started with declaring again that my desire, my life, my cry, is to place all of my hope in the Lord. Jesus is my hope, and in Him I need, and I will, by God s grace, stand firm. My hope is in Jesus Christ who came to redeem me and to reveal the way into the Eternal Kingdom of the Eternal God. We are taught that every day we live our lives within a spiritual reality of good and evil, and within this reality we make our personal decisions. Often these decisions are linked into an eternal consequence. My question before the Lord was- which spiritual reality speaks and whispers and convinces the mind of man to bend towards the acceptance of such evil as normal? Which spiritual reality is at work to destroy traditional marriage and dismantle traditional family values? The answer was clear enough. But what, if anything, can we do against this tsunami? We can do plenty. There are two Biblical realities which give perspective for me. One is the promise that the Battle belongs to the Lord. And two is a careful read of Paul in Ephesians 6 verses [NIV]. Here Paul directly exhorts, four times, that we need stand [not flee] against the devil s schemes and ways. Then in verse 16 the Bible says In addition to all of this, meaning to all of this standing, we have the fifth exhortation to stand. Clear enough. The battle belongs to the Lord, and within this spiritual battle we are exhorted to stand, not run, not ignore, and certainly not flee. Then reading on from verse 16 we see what we can do after deciding to stand for things of God against things of darkness. We can fight. We can fight into the spiritual by praying. We can pray for judges, for law-makers, for those responsible in political power. And we can thank God for those in power who stand for decent values, and if we can, affirm them in their decisions. And so my question becomes what can I do to fight? Well a significant strength in our ability to stand and fight is our call into Christian Community. What a gift, what a call this is, but how often do we not appreciate what we are given? Search your heart and if you find offence to God then deal with it. If you know in your heart that you are not reconciled to a brother or sister, deal with it. If you hold things against our way of life or those who endeavour to serve and pastor you, go tell them and deal with it, if you are just a name of the Prayer Watch but now no longer pray the Watch, then fix it. In other words get rid of any handle the enemy can hold in your life. Deal with yourself first and then you are strengthened in the purposes of Almighty God, and you then weaken the hold of the enemies of Christ Jesus. We have a calling in God and we are called for a purpose in God. Let s strengthen the walls right now and take our place alongside the thousands of others standing with us in the Sword of the Spirit. And let us remember and appreciate the tens of thousands of others in other related movements and ministries, and the good people who stand and pray with us from other denominations and streams in this mighty work of God- the church. And it is good to know that in New South Wales, Australia, there is a decent and courageous Crown Prosecutor. Your brother in the Lord, Roger

3 OUR PEOPLE Congratulations! To Lisa Borkus [], who recently underwent a successful surgery. [Please continue to pray for her for a full recovery.] [Note to all Branch leaders: Please send your local news/snippets to Roger Foley or Tom Caballes so that we can acknowledge important occasions in the lives of our brothers and sisters and make sure we do not miss any of them.] NEWS AND ARTICLES 3 WINTER OASIS 2014 IN AUCKLAND - THRIVE, DON T JUST SURVIVE The Branch hosted Kairos NZ s annual winter retreat this July during the semester break. Around 100 high school and university students attended the retreat, Winter Oasis The focus was on coming fully alive in our faith. The challenge was to embrace freedom in Christ through surrender and discipline in our lifelong journey to heaven. This weekend was a key time of bonding for community youth members from around NZ and with the group of twenty first timers who attended. A huge thank you to our Kairos leadership along with the YCP [Young Christian Professionals] team for their untiring efforts in making the weekend an environment that challenged each person to take a deeper step in their faith. The old timers and the first timers bonded with each other very well and at the end of the Oasis there was not a single youth eager to leave the camp. The ministry time with different reflective stations helped the youth to build a closer relationship with God and with each other. Fleur Carvalho one of the retreat attendees from the Branch, shares her thoughts. Thrive don t just survive, the theme for Winter Oasis this year called us to live a life beyond the average Christian. A talk given by Harry Lowe focused on the idea that Jesus is the answer to coming alive in our faith. John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. and John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life confirm that through Jesus we can thrive and not just survive. Phil s (Phillip Quense) talk highlighted that The extreme life of fullness only comes with a radical life of complete surrender Surrender and striving is the key to thriving if you want to thrive, you have to strive, over and over again. All the talks were empowering and fruitful, each talk connected and linked back to the main theme. Dave Quintana s query If He even whispers to you will you able to

4 4 hear him? challenges us to listen to God s voice so that we can respond to his call, and enjoy the fullness of life that God has in store for us. This Oasis drew over 100 youth from, Wellington, Nelson,, and beyond. There were so many new faces, and it was amazing to see such a diverse group of people come together united as one in faith. Winter Oasis showcased the vast range of talents and gifts the Lord has blessed us with, only to mention a few: the music teams, talented sportsmen and women, organizers, designers who decorated the hall for Lord s Day, and those who led the talks, workshops, and praise and worship. By listing just a few of the many talents it is easy to see that God has fully equipped us to thrive in our Christian life, and be Disciples of Christ. This successful event would not have been possible without the countless hours and hard work put into it, and so I would like to thank everyone who made this Winter Oasis a memorable experience!! So let us continue to thrive, remembering that the Lord grants the desire of your heart if you trust Him (Psalm 37:4) LIVING IN AN IMPERFECT CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY An article by Tom Caballes And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples. John 13:34-35 A Perfect Christian Community We all have different ideas of what a dream house or an ideal car looks like. But how would you depict a perfect Christian community? My description would include: All community members are faithful to daily prayer and Scripture. All community members have heard all our courses and are applying them in their lives. All of them are growing in Christian character. All the leaders have been adequately trained and have the vision, skill, time and energy to follow God s call; and all the members understand and support their leaders. There is perfect unity within the community among the leaders, members, and the youth. There are no cliques or factions within the community. All relationships are doing well there are no relationship difficulties, strains, grudges or misunderstandings. People patch up broken relationships quickly. There is no slander and gossip every word that is heard is healthy, up-building and encouraging.

5 5 All members are involved in some form of service and are building up the community and wider church in one way or another. The community is doing well financially, with all members being very generous with their giving. The community youth are catching the vision of the community, and are well on the way to becoming full adult members in the future. All the community youth are choosing to follow God and a vast majority of them stay in community. Their most significant relationships are in the community. Community youth work is flourishing, with abundant resources available in all fronts. Everyone is trying to evangelise in the school, university, neighbourood and at the workplace. There is a good response to evangelism work. Because of this, the community membership is flourishing. All the members needs are taken care of. All members of the community live out their call faithfully to the end. Would I like to live in such a community? Most probably, but I do not think I am qualified to do so. I will bring that community in disrepute because of my unfaithfulness, faults and sins. The reality is that no such community exists at least here on earth. We are all sinners, and being part of a Christian community does not make us automatically a saint. We are all in the process of being redeemed and growing in Christian maturity. That is why our community is not perfect because we are not perfect. Our transformation to Christ-likeness will only end after our last breath here on earth. A School of Love One thing that I learned when I was young in Christian community is that it is like a school of love. In school, we sign up to learn things. God the Father is the principal of the school we are enrolled in. We have one and the same teacher Jesus Christ. He is the one teaching us news skills - how to love, serve, relate and forgive one another. We also have the same tutor or coach the Holy Spirit to give us power to change and be transformed. We have one book all the time we are learning the Scripture, the Word of God. The Bible is our textbook, our guide, and our map in daily living. Some features of our School of Love include: We enrolled in the school so we can learn Kingdom values, relationships and character; we are here primarily to learn to love and serve one another. We are here to learn to be Christ-like in all things. And we are here also to unlearn the old ways of living and relating to one another before we enrolled in the school of love. We have schoolmates in the community who might have enrolled earlier or later than us they are ones we primarily apply what we learn from the school. Our schoolmates are as imperfect as we are. We tend to sin against each other and we tend to hurt one another. We need to learn to forgive and ask forgiveness from our brothers and sisters as the need arises. In spite of their imperfections, we are called to love and serve them to the end and that means we will bury one another and take care of each other s families as we get older and die. Our relationships are really eternal and are thicker than blood because we are all bought by the same price: the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do not earn any degree after some time our learning in the school of love is meant to be a lifetime enrolment, unless the Lord calls us somewhere else. Our

6 6 graduation is in heaven, where Jesus would welcome us and say, Well done, my good and faithful servant! Embracing an Imperfect Christian Community Our community is the body of Christ here on earth. It can be a great witness for nonbelievers to see people of different race, age, location and religion to be caring, loving and serving one another. If we do not live our lives well, our community can be a great scandal to people outside looking in. How can our community grow in holiness and zeal for God and become mature? Its members [that s us!] need to grow in holiness and zeal for God and become mature. We all need to set our focus on God, who called us to live this particular way of life, and not on the faults, weaknesses and sins of our brothers and sisters. If we do, then it will only be a matter of time before we give up. God is the source of all grace, and we need to fix our eyes on God in order to live our call in our imperfect community. I believe that it is God, in His great love and mercy to us, who formed our Christian community. It is by His grace that we can love, serve and live the way of life He has called us into. He is the one who sustains us and makes us grow to become mature men and women of God. Yes, we may need to talk with our leaders on improving how our community operates and also work on some of our relationships to restore them, but let us embrace our imperfect community, made up of imperfect brothers and sisters. Let us be faithful to our call to the end. Heaven is our true home, but God has gifted us a temporary home here on earth our sick, deficient and imperfect Christian community. 7 7 July - September 2014 WINTER MISSION APPEAL 2014 Our International and National Mission Work Throughout the Sword of the Spirit, the international community of communities to which we belong, individual members of the communities are encouraged to contribute to an Annual Appeal to assist with the high costs of Mission and Community Building work. The Lamb of God has decided to maintain the Winter Appeal as our means to encourage members and friends to be generous in supporting our ability to continue and expand mission work in the Pacific and here in New Zealand. We enjoy a land of plenty, despite what some are calling times of recession. We do have adequate infrastructure, access to clean water, little pollution, and homes full of many modern conveniences. Yet many people worldwide with whom the Sword of the Spirit work struggle for the very basics. But they love the Lord and they are his people as much as are we. As well as throughout New Zealand, the Lamb of God works particularly in the Fiji Islands, Australia and in parts of Asia and our work is growing. You can talk with any of our young people who have participated in our Mission Teams. Mission work does impact and change lives in both ways. We now work with many groups in Fiji and we have established a new community in Nadi. The Fijian economy is under stress and even breakfast cereals we are familiar with can cost as much as F$14-16 a box in a Nadi Supermarket. Most of the people with whom we work in Fiji would earn less than F$4.00 an hour. The environment is challenging. Will you please consider a donation to our work? Enclosed is a prepaid reply envelope. Cheques should be made payable to the Lamb of God. You can also donate online - BNZ Chch Branch, Account Name: Lamb of God; Number , but please inform Tom Caballes, our National Senior Administrator, by phone or [ ; josethomascaballes@gmail.com] regarding the amount and date so it can be traced and receipts given accordingly. 8 8 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Waiting on the Lord - August 2014 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! [Psalms 27:14] There are times in our journey with God when we get stuck until the Lord acts. It can be anything: waiting for a spouse, an unanswered prayer, a healing, or a situation change. But for now while we are waiting, are we supposed to hibernate until the Lord acts accordingly? In James 5:17, we are given an illustration of a farmer who patiently waits for the rain to come. But at the moment, he tends his crops, fertilises them, and removes any bugs or weeds around the plants. He does not just sit around until the rain comes. How about us? It is the easy path to just do nothing, be passive, lose heart and get angry with God until He acts. We are called to be proactive in our situation to bring about His will. So How Do I Proactively Wait for the Lord in My Life? 1. If you are waiting for one or several areas in your life for God to act, you should let all the other areas continue to go on like daily prayer, Scripture study, worship, fellowship and service. Your life goes on even if one or several areas are awaiting God s action. So do not hit the life pause button! 2. Remind yourself of God s faithfulness in the past, and that He will not forget you nor forsake you [Isaiah 49:14-16]. How big is your God, and how small is area that you are waiting for? 3. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. [Romans 8:28] If God is working for our good, we need to learn to be patient with Him. How strong is your faith that good will come out of the situation as you wait? 4. We live in time, but God does not. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that He has made everything beautiful in its time. God knows the perfect timing for us, and we need to patiently wait for Him. At the meantime, we can pray and intercede for God to act. We bring the situation to God see Luke 18: As we wait for God to act in our lives, we need to continue focus on loving, caring for and serving others. Do not stop doing these until God acts on your situation if you do, you are like blackmailing Him. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. [Galatians 6:7-10] 6. Surrender your life to God daily. Surrender your heartache, your disappointment, your yearning to Him in daily prayer. But continue to be patient and trust that in His time, He will act. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. [Matthew 6:33] OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. [James 5:7-9] 2. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! [Psalm 37:7] 3. Evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. [Psalm 37:9] 4. Other references: Psalms 38:15; 39:7; 62:5; 130:5; Proverbs 20:22; Philippian 4:4-8. FOR REFLECTION OR SHARING: 1. What areas in your life are you waiting on the Lord? 2. What are you doing about them proactively?

The Lord will carry out his purpose Jeremiah 51: 12 Last month the spirits of arrogance, bigotry, deception, timidity and fear were added to the Spiritual Warfare prayer so now I will look at these spirits in more depth. Firstly, arrogance, the dictionary says having an exaggerated opinion of one own importance or ability, conceited or overbearingly proud. For us it means having no need for God in our life or need to attend community or church meetings/services. If we look at New Zealand society today we see an arrogance to obeying God s laws as many people ignore the Ten Commandments and do as they please for their own pleasure. Sexual sin is one area that is common today and can lead into other types of sin such as violence and selfishness. The redefinition of marriage bill was an example of this arrogance as it went against God s ways and encouraged people into sin. Political correctness is another way that New Zealand society is denying God as it denies people the right to hold or more importantly express their views. Recently an Australian Judge suggested that incest could be alright in today society showing arrogance towards God ways and further encouraging people into sin. You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, The person who obeys them will live by them. Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen. Nehemiah 9: 29

12 12 Deception in the dictionary is the act of deceiving somebody, or the state of being deceived. Most of the above comments on arrogance also apply to the spirit of deception as many of these actions mislead people into sinning. Any time people misrepresent God laws they are leading people away from the truth and from a relationship with God our Father in heaven. Marriage and family life in today society is under attack as many people make misleading statements about what God has instituted. Even the Church is attacked as being out of date and should change to modern thinking but as Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow [Hebrew 13: 8] so the church is unable to change. Human rights put pressure on God laws as people want abortion and euthanasia among other things to be readily available affecting the weakest members of society. Jesus is very clear to his disciples about misleading people in Luke 17: 1-2: Jesus said to his disciples: Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. Bigotry is an intolerance of any ideas other than our own, to religion, race and politics, as described in the dictionary. New Zealand is a multi-cultural society today and we often see signs in our news media of intolerance to other cultures, way or style of life. Last year we had the white pride march in New Zealand a sign of bigotry. The following Prophecy 23/2/14 [abridged] has a message for us today in these areas. I speak to you again this day about spiritual warfare and this day I speak to you my children in the area of your mind and what you think. That is a real battleground with the evil one. My children I do not want you to accept every thought that comes into your mind as my truth. I want you to challenge the lies that some of you have in your minds and I want you to challenge it with my truth, with my word. I want you to rededicate your minds to my spirit and have my spirit rule your mind. My children I want you to be victorious in this area and I want you to give your minds over to me and submit your mind to me and seek my ways and read my word and think my thoughts. Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on!
