3 August/ September 2012 Christ the King Lutheran Church Newsletter Growing in Faith, Love and Service to the God Who Loves Us Are you tired of summer s heat? Everyone I have visited with is ready for some cooler weather. I do like the long hours of daylight and the change of pace summer brings. Where have your journeys taken you this summer? Who have you met along the way? Our Women s Bible Study Circle will meet on Tuesday, August 21 st, at 11:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. We continue our travels with a variety of biblical travelers who have encountered Christ along the way. Jeri Lindauer will lead the Bible Study, Marlys Tengvall is hostess. Our September meeting will be on the 18 th. We will begin a new Bible Study, Gathered by God. We will explore some of the many ways that we are Gathered by God. Debi Marx will be hostess. Lutheran Women of Omaha resumes on Tuesday, September 11 th. Our program will be Kids Against Hunger. Contact Mardelle for more information. Autumn Renewal is Saturday, September 15 th, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at Lord of Love Lutheran Church, Fort Street. Theme is Pray the Devil Back to Hell. Featured speaker is African Activist Leymah Gbowee, winner of numerous awards including most recently, the Nobel Peace Prize. Cost is $18. Registration deadline is September 5 th ; contact Mardelle for a registration form. Please continue to save UPCs from Our Family products, UPCs from Campbell soups (the entire label), and General Mills Box Tops for Education. A box for these items is located on the piano in the elevator room. Quilter s Corner Today, July 26 th, it s a cool, balmy 95 degrees outdoors. It just inspires me to think fall, especially when I see school supplies on sale or Sunday's "Christmas in July". Thus if you re excited about cleaning out nooks and crannies just remember the quilters are always looking for sheets, blankets or bedspreads. This may be given to me or left in the church office marked quilts. Happy Cleaning, Phyllis Carlson Lutheran World Relief has been distributing more than $12 million worth of quilts for over 60 years. In 2010, 319,610 quilts were made and shipped, those numbers jumped to 355,621 in Some countries that benefit from these quilts are Angola, Azerbaijan, Botswana, Chad, Liberia, Mail, Peru and Sierra Leone. These quilts can be homes to some, provide warmth at night to others, or be a comfort to children and even adults that may be suffering.
4 Grace and Peace There s a popular misconception that kids and teens these days are drifting away from God simply because they re part of a rebellious and self-centered generation. According to a recent study in a leading Christian journal, most kids wander from God due to a lack of spiritual guidance from surrounding adults, and, in fact, today s youth are crying out (not always in the most obvious or healthy ways) for faith and a moral center in their lives, longing for grownups to teach them about God, values, and boundaries. Exhibit A: Vacation Bible School, which continues to grow. As a church, VBS is a way for us to communicate clearly to children biblical truth and moral boundaries. Jesus is praised as Lord, the one true God, and the way of salvation for all. Children are taught God s commands to love all, forgive freely, honor parents, worship fully, pray fervently and give generously. Those Bible-based life lessons are precisely what today s young people yearn to learn, and they show up, and then they bring their friends. Along the way, they discover God, new life, freedom, and the blessing of moral boundaries. Please don t misunderstand. I don t live, theologically, on the edge of some kind of narrow-minded fundamentalism, and I m not suggesting every aspect and issue in a child s life is clear-cut, with an overly simplistic spiritual application. I don t want to reduce the Christian faith or biblical scholarship into some watered down, conveniently interpreted weapon for a misguided culture war. Despite the changing moral whims of pop culture, there remains this virtue called truth, acknowledged or not. All truth is God s truth, or it is not truth. The truth is there is a God. Regardless of precisely when or how, God did create the universe. God is love. Jesus Christ died as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, and rose from the dead to open the door to new and eternal life for all who are joined to him by faith. The Holy Spirit directs our lives, producing love, joy, peace and self-control. He afflicts the comfortable, and comforts the afflicted. That s a short list. It s all true, Bible-based, and there s nothing gray about it. I know it s tempting for parents, mentors, teachers, coaches, and even church leaders living in a world that has grown increasingly hostile toward all things religious (particularly Christianity) to remain vague about God with our kids, to minimize God-commanded moral boundaries, and soften the lines between right and wrong. But it s not worth it. Too many kids are getting lost. Too many are drifting. Too many are walking without God. I believe it s time for the grown-ups to grow up and take on the responsibility of instilling faith and values in our children. Let s teach our kids the truth about God and his guidelines for life this side of heaven. Let s lead by example, not superficially, but honestly. Let s commit to bringing them to Sunday School and worship. Let s pray with our kids, read them Bible stories, and talk openly about God with them. Most of all, let s give them Jesus. Let s give our kids a love that will fill their hearts now and forever. I am, however, suggesting that in a culture that defaults toward spiritual and moral relativism far too quickly and easily, kids often get lost in artificial shades of gray that don t exist in reality and it s hurting them.
5 Rally Sunday is August 12 and WOW! will it be FUN! School is just around the corner. Kids are excited about starting a new grade, new teachers, new backpacks. Christ the King is kicking off the program year with a BANG! Sunday School is back in session and to our growth, we are adding 2 classes! PreSchool, Kindergarden will be separate classes, 1 st /2 nd, 3 rd /4 th, and 5 th /7 th. Students go to their classrooms at 9am and closing in the gathering room will finish before worship begins. Parents are always welcome to stay with their little ones, come to the Adult Study dowstairs, or hang out for coffee and conversation in the Entryway. After Church Picnic! After worship, Paul Dawkins will be grilling up hotdogs. Bring a side to share and let s get the program year rolling! Backpack Blessing Here at Christ the King we want to celebrate and bless the beginning of another school year. Anyone committed to learning, be it in a school, home or workplace, bring your backpacks or lunch boxes, briefcases or laptops to worship at 10:00. We will lift up children and students of all ages, dedicating them to God's glory as we begin a new school year. A new school year or a new year for work, we ask that God would use our supplies, our equipment, our hands and our feet to help the world; and that we would keep God in the center in all that we do and learn. Confirmation starts August 25 th at 10am A field trip to Holy Family Shrine! Yes, That is a Sturday. What a great way to start out the year. A year of prayer and discovery, learning and growing, a year together. For ALL families involved in Christ the King s Confirmation Ministry! If you ve got someone going into sixth or seventh grade or you were in confirmation last year, that s you! We have typically met on Wednesday nights, but with tired minds and bodies at 7pm, dark in the winter, and one of us living an hour away, we are going to be shifting to Saturdays. Don t Miss It! August 25 th at 10am!
6 WE RE IN THE PARADE! August 18, 2012 Ride on the float and represent Christ the King. We would like as many people as possible to ride on the float. We will be lining up at 9:30am beside Lincoln Rd. The parade will start at 10am. This is a fun and easy thing for kids to do. Sunday School BIG PICTURE It is time to kick off the Sunday school year! And we will be doing so in a BIG way this year with the start of classes on August 12. Invite your neighbors and friends to join you! Here are some BIG DATES you ll want to put on the calendar. Youth Sunday and the Christmas Program Youth will be leading two worship services this Sunday School year. September 23, 2012 Youth Sunday Each class will have a little something to do as well as the entire group leading the congregation in their favorite songs. December 9, 2012 Christmas Program The Christmas program is less class oriented and so the rehearsal on Saturday before is paramount. Please make sure that you mark your calendar for this event. It will certainly be something to invite extended family and friends to. Youth and Family Events In addition to the regular Sunday school classes, throughout the year various activities are provided for the children and their families to participate in together. October 6, 2012, 10am Noah s Ark Party Kids will bring two of a kind of stuffed animal, we ll learn more about Noah, do some fun crafts and play games fun for the whole family! December 6, 2012, 10am St. Nicholas Party Bring the family and meet St. Nick, make a devotional decoration for Advent and start the season focused on Jesus. March 16, 2013, 10am Polka Dot Party Sounds interesting huh? It should make sense when you re there. We ll play twister, do some other dot related things and learn how great it is to be a DOT. Our Sunday School has an open door policy. Please feel free to come in and visit your child s class at any time. We are looking forward to a new school year and as always, if you have any questions please feel free to drop a note in my mailbox and I, or the appropriate person, will respond as soon as possible. 7 Dear friends in Christ, What comes to mind when someone mentions work? Is your initial tendency to moan and groan, wishing you could avoid work? It might surprise you to learn that God described his creative acts as work and that he brought work into being shortly after he created man. Adam worked in the Garden before and after his fall due to his sin. Cain worked by raising vegetables. Abel worked by tending sheep. Throughout Scripture, people worked. Even the Lord Jesus worked while he was on earth, and he described God the Father as having worked. Work has always been part of God s nature and eternal plan for mankind. Wait a minute If God created and owns everything, why should we his children have to work? Couldn t he just provide for us in some supernatural way that would enable us not to have to work? Surely, God could do that, but he doesn t do so. According to scripture, one of the primary benefits from working and providing for our needs is to be able to lead lives marked by integrity and a healthy self respect. And God s plan is that we are best able to accomplish these worthy goals by working. God also knows that by utilizing our talents and abilities through work, he will be able to minister to others through us in an effective way. Work, then, is one of the primary avenues by which we can demonstrate our Christian faith, particularly as we do our tasks to God s glory. Work is also the primary way through which we obtain money to give to God. What should be the Christian s response to work? First, thank God for work and for the ability to work. As Solomon observed, this is a gift of God. Second, view your work as a means of bringing glory to God. Third, whatever you do no matter what your vocation or occupation do it with your might, as unto the Lord. And finally, remember that by providing work for us to do, God enables us to give to him and to his ministry at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Jay Welshonse - Treasurer Attention, Choir Members Old and New There will be a brief choir meeting after church on Rally Day, August 12, to receive the singing schedule (for the whole year including rehearsals) and also to receive some folders with the music we will be singing in the next year. While we sing to the glory of God, let us also give thanks to Harriet who dedicated so much of her time and love in making our worship service so meaningful. Please keep Rally Day on your calendar, and we hope to see all of you at the meeting. We welcome any new members that would like to share their talents as well. We are looking forward to seeing all of you on Rally Day at 11:30. In Christian love and fellowship, Muffy Bratsveen, Worship and Music Chair
