3 PLYMPTON TEAM MINISTRY PLYMPTON ST MARY PLYMPTON ST. MAURICE Serving Christ in the heart of Plympton and beyond June 2017 Dear Friends, In the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples are instructed by the risen Christ to remain in Jerusalem until the promised Holy Spirit is given at Pentecost. We read that the apostles in the upper room with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with Mary the mother of Jesus and his brothers. After this example, the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost have traditionally been devoted to prayer for the Holy Spirit. They have become a pattern of novenas of prayer for particular intentions. In recent years the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited church communities and individuals to join in this period of prayer with particular intentions (the meaning of novenas is prayer with particular intentions over time) under the heading THY KINGDOM COME. You may have read a short piece about this from the Diocesan News in last month s magazine with Bishop Robert s encouragement for us to be involved. Particularly in the light of the first part of our diocesan vision to grow in prayer and for us our recent Lent groups on this same theme. Last year over 100,000 Christians were involved with 3,000 events and services. This year there is greater ecumenical involvement with other denominations taking part. There are particular so called Beacon events in cathedrals including a Pentecost Prayer Pilgrimage in Exeter Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday evening, 4th June, at 6.30pm. The Archbishops write: The vision is to join with the whole family of God the Father, in praying for the empowering of God the Holy Spirit, that we may be effective witnesses to God the Son, Jesus Christ. It starts with followers of Jesus Christ getting on their knees before God and praying Come, Holy Spirit. We can take part in our Team Ministry by joining the Church s daily prayer during this period. The Church of England Daily Prayer book has a special section for Morning & Evening Prayer during this period (25th May 4th June) and Morning Prayer is said in one of our churches each day. There is also the weekday Eucharists. Then we will have a focus on one day Wednesday 31st May, the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth. This seemed the right day as Mary was present with the apostles for the original novena. This is for both parishes and will take place in St Maurice beginning with a Eucharist at 9.30am and the church open for prayer until Evening Prayer is said at 5.00pm. Finally, of course, you can pray your own prayers during this period wherever you are but joining in with this intention. Yours in Our Lord, Roger Beck 3

Our next Meeting is on 7th June with a communion service in church at 2pm. Joan Humphries OUR RESPONSE TO A REQUEST FOR SUPPORT The staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have written to say thank you for the donation of knitted baby blankets. "They are greatly appreciated and will be put to very good use." Thank you to the members of the Mothers' Union and others for their time and generosity in making these. Margaret Provost GOOD FRIDAY WORKSHOP After the Good Friday service, the young people gathered in the church hall for an art and craft workshop. We painted six pictures to represent Jesus life and made figures for each person there. Then we found a bible passage to explain what was happening. Afterwards, Christine led a talk where we discussed each picture and what it meant. To finish, we iced biscuits and had hot cross buns. Sarah Duckworth FOOD ON THE AGENDA AGAIN Well, well, well, food has raised its head again, the Parish Lunch, following the 10am service and the AGM, was very well attended. If you weren't there you missed a treat! There was such an array of food, savoury and sweet, cold meats, salads, a cous-cous salad which was amazing, quiche, tarts, flans, lovely crusty bread then the dessert table - what a selection everything looked so delicious. There was also a selection of drinks of your choice. 4

5 So much planning and effort and thought had obviously gone into this event. Another food event which takes place every month and which is organised by Chaddlewood Church is Good Company, again a lot of thought and planning go into arranging the venue, advising those who go of the time and place. This month we were at the Brook Inn where we received, as always, a warm welcome, a choice of meals from the menu, plus entertainment from a duo, which, incidentally, became a trio just as we were leaving. Thank you to everyone who organises events such as these, stand up and take a bow! Judith Bye THE STRAWBERRY TEA on Wednesday 21st June in the Church Hall 2.30pm to 4.30pm. 9 Church of England Devon Magazine Good News from the Diocese of Exeter June 2017 INSIDE: SEA BAPTISM JOY IN TORQUAY Nine people from St Mary Magdalene Church baptised on Easter Day FROM SERVING IN IRAQ TO SERVING THE CHURCH Kim Stanton on her journey from Army to priesthood Christians are being urged to pray and get involved in the General Election to take place on 8 June. Faith has a central role to play in politics say the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in a letter sent to all parishes ahead of the General Election. The Archbishops suggest Christians could organise hustings or volunteer for candidates as well as ensuring to vote. They said that we should pray for those standing in the election and renounce cynicism by engaging prayerfully with candidates and issues. They add: Our Christian heritage, our current choices and our obligations to future generations and to God s world will all play a shaping role. Director of Church and Society Martyn Goss added, Through public elections Christians are called to remember that they are also citizens and therefore CHRISTIANS URGED TO PRAY AND VOTE AT ELECTION Info: For a copy of the Archbishop s letter and for further information, go to the news section of our website: have responsibilities for both the local community and the wider society in which they live. We are invited to make choices that will have consequences not only for our generation but also for the future. Deep at the heart of the Gospel is a message to be concerned and caring for the most vulnerable people in our world those whose human growth is stunted by disease or poverty or oppression. All Christians have a moral duty to look beyond their own interests and speak up for justice and kindness. 9

10 Easter Joy at sea Baptisms Nine people were baptized in the sea at Torquay on Easter Day. Mark Searle and team from St Mary Magdalene Church gathered on the beach with a crowd of supporters before baptizing them one by one in the sea. NEW DIOCESAN SECRETARY Stephen Hancock has been announced as the next Diocesan Secretary for our diocese. Stephen was a Commercial Director for HSBC Bank and is the son of a priest, his father Paul is a Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral. He will oversee the administration and financial life of the Diocese and be an important voice in the senior staff shaping policy. Bishop Robert said: This is an enormously important appointment for the Diocese as we begin to build on our priorities to grow in prayer, make new disciples, and serve the people of Devon with joy. Please pray for Stephen and his family as he prepares to take on this role. RURAL FORUM LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE The Devon Churches Rural Forum, created in 2015, has just released its first newsletter and has launched a website. Parishes will bring their TKC prayer boxes to be offered to God at the event which will include contemporary and traditional worship and Bishop Sarah will be there to bless all who come. 11 Former army medic Kim Stanton has swapped the challenges of the battle zone for the challenges of the priesthood. Kim is just 28 and is in her last year as an ordinand - a vicar in training God is personal Kim describes a difficult childhood and the church being a safe space for her. She said: I joined a church youth group. I liked being around other young Christians as I felt accepted. I didn t like being at home and this got me away for a while. I saw the church as a safe space but the idea of a God that cares for me did not relate to my everyday experiences at this time. For Kim joining the army was a more permanent way to get away from the difficult home environment and she served in Germany, Canada, Poland and Kuwait between the ages of 17 and 22. She describes experiencing a profound sense of God when she was feeling at her lowest on duty in Iraq. This experience has changed her life and led her towards a life of faith in the church. She said: I was at breaking point and said some words, which I suppose was a prayer to God - I can t go on living like this anymore. There was a sudden feeling of a golden warmth seeping through me. God felt so real at that moment. The thing that changed in that moment was that I had accepted there was a God and that I wasn t on my own. I was at breaking point and said some words, which I suppose was a prayer to God She adds: When I look back I can see how God was with me even though I had lots of questions and couldn t see how it was personal for me. Upon leaving the army Kim got a job as an Activity Instructor at Christian Retreat House Lee Abbey. Whilst there, as part of a loving and diverse community, Kim decided to go through the selection process for church leadership and was accepted. Kim married Jared in May and will be serving at St Jude s in Plymouth for her curacy. She finishes: It is about trust and knowing that God loves you despite everything. I believe there is a plan for each of us and we rely on God s provision to keep us going in the difficult times. 11

16 A CHANCE TO OFFER YOUR TIME - AND GET FIT! For those of you who wonder what to do to benefit your church and community, you might be interested in an activity devoid of wasted subscriptions to a gym, but which would still stimulate the mind and benefit the body, how about considering Bellringing? A recent recruit sent in a report: My name is Raymond Johns and I retired at sixty-five years of age, and looking for an activity to fill my time, I decided to take up bell ringing at my local church, after I decided to attend St Mary s Church services on a regular basis. I was approached by a member of the congregation to ask if I was interested in bell ringing as they were very short of ringers for weddings and church services. After some thought I gave it a try. I found the existing team of ringers very friendly. The two teachers, Brian and John were most helpful - full of hints and tips to make learning easier, and encouraging when I made mistakes. Brian became my main instructor as time went by and thanks to his dedication to teaching I now feel much more able to ring. With Brian s encouragement I am now confident to know where I am going when the calls are made to alter the sequence of numbers to alter the tune that the other bells are ringing I would encourage anyone to take up this stimulating pass time to keep fit, it is good exercise for the body, especially for the midriff and brain. The brain because you have to work out mentally which bell you should be following when certain numbers are called. When learning, mistakes are inevitably made, but this is quite normal as it takes a lot of dedication and practice and help from trainers like Brian to get it right. It is a challenging hobby and when you do get it right there is a sense of satisfaction and joy. For me it is especially joyous to ring on Xmas morning. This tradition is centuries old. It is now in serious decline, so if you have a community spirit and would like to try, you would be most welcome to practice night at St. Mary s Church Plympton, pm on a Monday evening. Looking forward to meeting you. Come and join us! Ray Johns. I understand St Maurice would welcome interested people too! See page 2 for contact details of the Tower Captains. Editor PLYMPTON SUPPORTS THE PLYMOUTH HISTORY FESTIVAL 13TH AND 14TH MAY Plympton St Mary welcomed Plympton Civic Society over this weekend which was part of the Historic Plympton Festival. There was much interest in the Black Prince reenactments, the Plympton History exhibition in the Parish Hall, and over 50 people attended the Mediaeval and Folk Music Concert in St Mary s Church on Saturday evening. St Maurice Church had an Open Day too. Many helpers provided the refreshments and guided people around exhibitions, churches and activities and there were many visitors who were enthralled by the breadth of history in Plympton. 16

17 It is fair to say that the Royalty in Residence event at the Priory, which included a celebration of the Black Prince s visit to the Priory after the Battle of Poitiers with the captured King of France was highly sought after: Visitors across Plympton anxiously requested directions to see the knights in armour, ladies of court, mediaeval dancing, jousting and historical talks during Saturday and Sunday. They took the opportunity to visit St Mary s Church and learn a bit about this large parish church with a history stretching back over 700 years. On Saturday evening, the Medieval and Traditional Folk Concert in the Church featured two members of the group Mock Hobby Horse, Nick Millington and Russell Harris, and in the second part, Mick Bramich, a knowlegable and entertaining local folk guitar musician played traditional folk music - some from the Sabine Baring Gould collection- and explained the historical background of the ballads in a most entertaining way. The re-enactment group from the Priory visited as honoured guests to demonstrate some court dancing. Photographs: Black Prince with his wife and deerhound; The encampment; Church artefact display arranged by Mo Diffey; dancing at the Medieval Concert in St Mary s Church The Plympton & District Civic Society was founded in 1970 and was formed to protect the heritage of Plympton and monitor development to ensure it would not be of detriment to our Town. This tradition continues and the organisation helps preserve the Plympton Priory site and on most Thursday mornings there is a working party carrying out tasks on the site. The Society runs events throughout the year - supporting local events such as Lamb Feast, May Fair, and a Charity Quiz. If interested to help preserve the wonders of Plympton, please contact the Society via: info@plymptoncivicsociety.org.uk Membership is 5 annually. Brian Sorenson 21 Torridge Rd PL7 2DQ is also a named membership contact. 17
