1 Messiah Lutheran Church, 750 Rindge Rd., Fitchburg, MA Pastor David Jacoby, 706 Rindge Rd., Fitchburg, MA (h) or Messiah Lutheran Learning Center 780 Rindge Rd., Fitchburg, MA From Pastor Jacoby And Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men. Mark 1:17 New England District Convention From June 14 th -16 th, Lay Delegate Tony Gasbarro and I went to the New England District Convention in Springfield, MA to represent Messiah. Every 3 years, our local district of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod meets at convention to elect new officers for the district, vote on resolutions, hear the presidents reports, and to worship together. This was my first convention, as it was for Tony, so we both weren t sure what to expect, but it was certainly a neat experience. So, I just wanted to share some highlights of the convention: District President Rev. Timothy Yeadon was reelected, as well as Rev. Jim Butler as our regional vice president, and Rev. Paul Gramit was ratified as our local circuit counselor. Resolutions were passed: to encourage vacation time for pastors, to look into adopting salary guidelines that are tailored for each area (currently we have one set of guidelines for the entire district) to establish formally a director of care for pastors and their families (currently filled by Deaconess Tiffany Manor) to affirm biblical teaching on sexuality in light of new laws like the bathroom bill in Mass. Also, numerous church workers in the district were honored for their years of service and church workers who are in glory with Christ were remembered, as well. We also got to hear about some of the neat ministries going on in the district including a booming Chinese ministry at our sister church in Quincy, MA, a booming Brazilian Portuguese at our sister church in Hanover, MA, and what may soon be the district s newest church plant, the Oromo people of Ethiopia in Cambridge, MA. Some of that new church s leadership will actually spending the weekend at Camp Pineshore early July. There s is currently big plan to start a capital fund for church planting in the district. One of the leaders of that project Rev. Tim Sandeno identified some areas in New England that could really use an Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod church plant like Worcester, MA, Central New Hampshire (Concord- Lake Winnipesaukee area), Vermont, and Maine. We also heard presentations from the different mercy ministries in New England including the Comfort Dogs, Operation Barnabas (a ministry to military and their families), and Orphan Grain Train an LCMS ministry that ships donations to the poorest parts of the world. (They re actually looking for a new collection point in Central or Eastern Mass which got my mind thinking about some of the empty warehouses and mill buildings in Fitchburg, MA. Here s hoping maybe someone in the congregation has a connection to some of their owners???) So it was busy few days, but I d say the biggest takeaway from the convention is the overwhelming unity both the district and the synod as a whole has. People were respectful. Debate was healthy. There wasn t too much controversy. All said, it was clear that everyone in the district and synod really had the same mission: to share the Gospel of Jesus. So we re all in the same boat, and thankfully as we learned from Miracle of the Calming of Storm, Jesus is in that boat with us. In Christ, Pastor Jacoby July 2018 Newsletter
2 Our summer club is in full swing over at MLP! It s hard to believe another school year has come and gone. We wrapped up our school year with a special Graduation Ceremony for the Pre-K children. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a very special night for everyone in attendance. The staff at MLP feels truly blessed to have been able to share these learning experiences with the children throughout the year. We look forward to seeing the children transition into their new classrooms and we wish our preschool friends that are heading into Kindergarten a blessed year! We are ready for a fun and busy summer! Stephanie Maynard Messiah Lutheran Preschool Director
