It is the time of the year where we have meetings to make plans for the new year. This was true for our church, by having our recent quarterly voters meeting, and it was true for our District, by having our District Convention as well. Now, speaking of the District Convention, I would like to direct your attention to this newsletter to learn more about the results of our North Dakota District Convention. The convention is held every three years. At the convention we vote on a district president and also make motions to act upon as churches walking together in North Dakota. Very briefly, Pr. Arie Bertsch was elected as our new president and our district voted positively on several motions about upholding Biblical/Traditional Marriage, as well as working on continuing many of our mission work endeavors locally and worldwide. What does this mean for our local church, though? It says that we walk together with other LCMS Churches here in North Dakota. It means that the money that we send off to the District is being used faithfully for supporting the churches of the North Dakota District and the missions in Chile and Kenya as well. It means that we stand together with other LCMS Churches as we walk along in this ever-complex-twenty-firstcentury. Besides the ND District, the rest of this newsletter focuses on what is going on here at Zion. Things such as our Lent schedule, our Lent Service Series, a recap of our internet endeavors from 2017, and so on. So, take some time and check out the newsletter. 2 2 ND District LCMS Convention Highlights The 2018 convention was held Jan at the Astoria Hotel in Dickinson, ND under the theme Unity in Christ. Representing Zion were delegates Pastor Richard and Jim Asche. Tana McKenna represented Higher Things. Every day started and ended with worship. Included in the elections were: President Rev. Arie Bertsch from St Paul s Minot and St Peter Sawyer 1 st Vice President Rev. Kirk Peters from St Matthew Hazen and St James Golden Valle, 2 nd Vice President Rev. Steve Schulz from Immanuel Fargo Secretary Rev. Joshua Reimche from Our Savior Bottineau, St Paul Rugby, and Immanuel Willow City Treasurer Leon Bladow from Hankinson, Board of Directors Rev. Adam Moline from Immanuel Hankinson and St John Belford District Nominating Committee Rev. Matthew Richard and Greg Nelson from Zion Gwinner SE Circuit Visitor Rev. Sean Daenzer from Peace Barney and Trinity Great Bend Synodical President Rev. Matthew Harrison spoke on the state of the synod. Convention Essayist Rev. Lawrence Rast, President of Concordia Theological Seminary Ft Wayne, IN, spoke on the topic of Adiaphora. Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard presented a bible study on Unity in Communion focusing on the Greek word koinonia from 1 Cor 10: Resolutions adopted include uniting in a common policy for marriage, uniting in the practice of close/closed Communion, providing salary guidelines for all church workers, supporting Mission of Christ s Care for Children-Kenya, and continuing international mission opportunities in Santiago, Chile. 7 7 January 28, 2018 Septuagesima Dear Congregations of the Southeast Circuit, Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Amen! One of the things our SEND pastors have talked about lately was sending a pastoral letter several times a year to the congregations and people of our circuit. I begin that today with what will also be my last letter as your Circuit Visitor. On August 27 th, our circuit held its yearly forum, and appointed me to serve as Circuit Visitor for the next 3 years. However, at the district convention last week, I was also elected to serve on the district board of directors. The Constitution of the ND district prevents a pastor from holding more than one office in the district. For that reason, I am unable to serve as Circuit Visitor. At the convention, the delegates from each congregation caucused and held an election for a new SEND Circuit Visitor. Rev. Sean Daenzer of Great Bend and Barney was elected to serve, and that election was approved by the convention. For this reason, I ask your prayers, not just for all our pastors and congregations, but also Pastor Daenzer as he begins service as your Circuit Visitor and for me as I serve on the District Board. Pastor Daenzer will do a fine job in service to you. We are truly blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ to be in such a fine circuit where any of the pastors would be able to step up and serve in a faithful manner in any capacity. We also are blessed to have such unity in the faith. I will continue to pray for you on a regular basis. God s peace and comfort be yours in Jesus Christ, Pastor Moline
