3 Pastor s Message Page 2 Dear Friends in Christ, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Everything else is subject to change. The truth is, everything else does change. Sometimes change is good and sometimes change is bad. Things change for the better and things change for the worse. All one knows for sure is that things change. What is changing in your life at this time? Do you consider it to be a good thing or not? Whatever it might be, I would encourage you to remember that your Lord stays the same. The same Lord you came to know as a child or as an adult is exactly the same today. He is always with you. He always cares for you. You can always count on him for help. How many times in life have you looked back and reflected on how the Lord was there for you and brought you through different things? Has there ever been a yesterday when the Savior turned his back on you? That simply doesn t happen. Now since the Lord is always the same and does not change, I can be assured He will be with me today. I only need to look at all the yesterday s of life to see how He will help today. That truly is the way it will be forever. It sure feels good in this changing world and life to know that my Lord stays the same. I find that very comforting. On another note, July marks again the celebration of the birthday of our country. We all certainly have much to be thankful for when we reflect on the many freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this land. It is so easy to take them for granted. What a blessing to be able to worship the Triune God freely. What a blessing to be able to express our faith in an open manner. I would remind each and every person reading this to never take freedoms for granted. I would encourage you to hold our country and all our leaders in government up in prayer to the Lord on a regular basis. We all need each other s prayers if we wish to carry out the will of the Lord in our lives. May our gracious God continue to watch over our land and shower His blessings upon us. May we be a people who desire to be faithful to the Lord. Serving our Savior Pastor Bergelin

4 Vicar s Message Page 3 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 61:1 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Now that we are in the month of July we celebrate Independence Day, the day that we broke off from England and became our own country. During this time, it is a time of patriotism and celebration, and looking all over the world, the month of July is when many countries celebrate their own independence. Truly we can give thanks to the Lord God for our continued freedom in this country, and we celebrate alongside our fellow countrymen and join in the festivities. But as a Christian, what does independence really mean? Sure we enjoy the civil liberties that this country has to offer and I think that most of us would agree that we would not want to live in any other country in the world. But this liberty and freedom that Christ is proclaiming is not the same as what the Bible talks about. Instead we are free from the slavery of sin. Not that we won t sin, because we are after all fallen creatures. But the truth is that we are free from the consequences of sin, so that we won t have to face the punishment that our sin earned. Christ s death and resurrection has freed us from the guilt and slavery of sin, so that we might stand up against sin and the devil knowing that our sins are forgiven. So many people in our world think freedom is the ability to do anything that you want, anyway you want, and anytime you want, but that isn t true freedom. We as Christians are the only ones who know what true freedom is, because doing whatever the sinful flesh desires isn t freedom at all; it is subjecting yourself to slavery to the sinful flesh. As we celebrate Independence Day, may we remember what true Independence is all about, the freedom to live as Christians. Your Servant in Christ, Vicar Scheil

Elders Corner: The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. John 20:20 True happiness for us Christians is also seeing Jesus. Remember that we don t have to wait for eternity, we can see Jesus today! We see Him as he is revealed to us on Sunday in His word and the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith at communion. If we focus our thoughts on what is truly important in our lives, then happiness and contentment won t seem like a mirage, a vision that moves away as we get closer. Lord, how anxiously we wait the joys you have in store for us in heaven. Please help us to avail ourselves of every opportunity for true happiness and contentment in your word and sacrament. Amen.

10 Lutheran High Highlights Page 9 Neat Numbers Baseball fans have an affinity for numbers and statistics.often when people think of Yankee great, Joe DiMaggio, they recall his incredible 56- game hitting streak. Cal Ripken Jr., aka Iron Man, is renowned for his playing in 2,632 straight games. Cy Young still has the all-time highest number of wins for a major league pitcher at 511.Current Yankee, Alex Rodriguez, and legendary Yankee, Lou Gehrig, have the most career grand slams in baseball history each with 23 (As agehrig fan, I m hoping A-Rod does not break this record). The last player to hit over.400 in a season was Ted Williams when he hit.406 in Personally, I hope the number of World Series Championships won by the Milwaukee Brewers 0 changes sometime soon or at least in my lifetime. Speaking of numbers, Neat Repeats Lutheran High s thrift store located between the Pick-n-Save and Kmart in Plymouth recently celebrated and gave thanks for its own impressive number--$300,000. You read that right. Neat Repeats, in less than three full years, recently went over the $300,000 mark in total sales. We give thanks to God for this incredible blessing. During these last three years, with a tough economy and other fiscal challenges, God saw fit to provide Lutheran High the fruitful blessings of Neat Repeats while serving the community at the same time. God s timing is always good as is His grace, mercy, and abundance. If you have not had the opportunity to shop or see Neat Repeats, we encourage you to stop out and visit. People are amazed at the size, organization, and neatness of the store as well as the variety of high quality items available at low prices. You will fall in love with the place on your first visit. Best of all, every purchase you make directly supports your Lutheran High School. Neat Repeats would not be the miracle story it is without giving thanks to God for everything He provides as well as the many dedicated volunteers who give so much time to the store. Our volunteers love working at Neat Repeats, and they give so much love and attention to the store. If you are interested in helping out at the store, please Darlene Mech, who coordinates our volunteers, at dr.darlenemech@gmail.com We would love to have your help! Lutheran High s mission is To Prepare Christian Leaders One Student at a Time. Your help, in whatever form it comes financial donations, volunteering Neat Repeats, etc. allows us share the love of Christ with each student. Thank you for making an eternal difference in the lives of our young people. In Jesus name, Dr. James A. Pingel I I Executive Director

12 South Wisconsin District Newsletter July Prayer Calendar Page 11 Page 1 Joy and partnership in life together Brothers and sisters in Christ: Quite often when we read through Paul s letter to the Philippians, we focus on the joy that Paul continually expressed throughout this letter. It begins in the very first chapter of this letter. Paul tells the Philippian believers: In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. Those are important words. Those words are an opening window into Paul s heart and soul. Though he is under arrest, awaiting trial before Caesar, though he has never been charged with a crime, Paul is not feeling sorry for himself. Rather he is excited. He is filled with joy because he has seen what God has been able to do in places like Philippi. There is a church in Philippi. There are believers there. There are partners in the gospel there. That gospel is what united the Philippians into a common fellowship. That gospel unites us in a common faith. That means that, though we are separated from the Philippians by thousands of years, we are partners in the gospel with them. Together with the Philippians we share a common faith in Jesus as our Savior. It is God s gift to us. Together with the Philippians we share in the Savior s blessings of love and forgiveness. Together with the Philippians we share the Savior s life. We are partners, sharing in the gospel; partners here, and partners with all the other congregations and believers that make up our Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Now what are we going to do with the partnership the koinonia that our Lord has given to us? We haven t earned it ourselves. Like everything else that we have as God s people, koinonia is his gift to us. What will we do with it? How will we live it out? That sacrifice is for us. That blood is shed as payment for our sins of neglect and our sins of rebellion. Jesus dies our death so that we might truly be the people of God, people who set free from sin to now measure our lives by the shadow of the cross. That s the encouragement of the Apostle Paul who writes in the second chapter of this letter: Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. May God bless us as we live out our convention theme of Life forgiven, life together. Rev. John C. Wille SWD president
