1 The monthly Newsletter of Trinity Lutheran Church. Dedicated to the Glory of the Triune God. Sent to inform members and friends about the Mission and ministry of our Lord s Church. TRIANGLE TRIANGLE Pastor Bergelin s Message J u l y N e w s l e t t e r Dear Friends in Christ, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Everything else is subject to change. The truth is, everything else does change. Sometimes change is good and sometimes change is bad. Things change for the better and things change for the worse. All one knows for sure is that things change. What is changing in your life at this time? Do you consider it to be a good thing or not? Whatever it might be, I would encourage you to remember that your Lord stays the same. The same Lord you came to know as a child or as an adult is exactly the same today. He is always with you. He always cares for you. You can always count on him for help. How many times in life have you looked back and reflected on how the Lord was there for you and brought you through different things? Has there ever been a yesterday when the Savior turned his back on you? That simply doesn t happen. Now since the Lord is always the same and does not change, I can be assured He will be with me today. I only need to look at all the yesterday s of life to see how He will help today. That truly is the way it will be forever. It sure feels good in this changing world and life to know that my Lord stays the same. I find that very comforting. On another note, July marks again the celebration of the birthday of our country. We all certainly have much to be thankful for when we reflect on the many freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this land. It is so easy to take them for granted. What a blessing to be able to worship the Triune God freely. What a blessing to be able to express our faith in an open manner. I would remind each and every person reading this to never take freedoms for granted. I would encourage you to hold our country and all our leaders in government up in prayer to the Lord on a regular basis. We all need each other s prayers if we wish to carry out the will of the Lord in our lives. May our gracious God continue to watch over our land and shower His blessings upon us. May we be a people who desire to be faithful to the Lord. 2 Vicar Koester s Message Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Howards Grove, Soon we will be celebrating the 4th of July, the day that our country declared its independence from Great Britain. There will be many parades and activities that dot our calendars. Fireworks will light up the night sky. There will also be a lot of talk about the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are certainly blessed to live in a country where we have freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom to practice our faith in the way that we know our Lord deserves. There are many countries where that is certainly not the case. It is illegal to own a Bible or hold a Christian worship service in many places. Though we have these freedoms and are thankful for them, being an American citizen does not mean necessarily that a person is truly free. True freedom comes from Jesus Christ alone. From the time of our conception, we were slaves to sin. We had that original sin which was passed down from our parents and ultimately from Adam and Eve. Not only did we have this original sin, but we daily added to the avalanche by our thoughts, our actions, and our neglect of our responsibilities. As Jesus says in John 8:34-36 Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Without Christ, we could not help ourselves from sinning. Everything resulted in us sliding back down the hill to serve our master Satan. However, through Jesus death and resurrection, our chains have fallen off and we are no longer slaves. Martin Luther put it this way in Freedom of a Christian: One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel of Christ As Christians, we now live free because Jesus has redeemed us. In addition, a Christian life includes a life of service springing from the love Jesus has shown to us. So, as you put on your red, white, and blue to celebrate this national holiday, be grateful for those who defend your earthly freedoms, but also remember the gift of eternal freedom that we have received when we became part of God s family through the waters of Holy Baptism. All praise, honor, and glory be to the King over the nations, our triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! In Christ, Vicar Kevin Koester There will be a potluck on Sunday, July 22nd for Vicar Koester after the Voters meeting. We hope you will join us. Following the potluck we will be helping Vicar load up his vehicle. ELDER S CORNER As we enter July we are in the time of year when everything starts growing. The bare ground brings forth green grass and beautiful flowers. The trees are many shades of green and leafing out. The crops planted in the brown fields become a wonderful green against the blue sky. Another thing that needs to grow is our faith. As we know, faith either becomes stronger or weaker, never staying the same. Means of increase include word and sacrament. Every Christian home has a Bible which should be read and digested regularly. No other book can give us more correct answers and Godly direction in our daily lives. The Lord's Supper is offered regularly and is for the forgiveness of sins and another way to grow in faith. To receive communion we need to attend church which helps with our faith. Being among people of like thinking can assist us in a stronger faith life. As we see the earth bloom in the growth of flowers, trees and crops, let us also bloom in our increasing faith. Father in Heaven, Help us to increase our faith by being in your word and partaking in your Holy Supper on a regular basis and always remembering that you are always with us. We also remember that You told us in Romans 10:17 " Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ". Amen. 4 The Prayer Calendar is Submitted by CWF. World Relief Human Care CHRIST S CARE FOR CHILDREN Kenya Project 24 Visitors to P24 Othoro Site This spring we had two returning visitors. Pastor Mike Giddings and Pastor Douglas Bergelin, came to our P24 Othoro site. The pastors had visited last year, staying for over a week, building relationships with the boys at the facility as well as helping with English, tutoring, among other things. Now, after their second visit their relationships have been strengthened and the boys really enjoyed their time with them. Both Pastors are now big advocates of the P24 and the CCC: K program. We know that after their visit they will be able to speak well of the program and share with others in their congregations and districts. FROM THE MISSION FIELD The country of Sierra Leone in West Africa has been ravaged by civil war ( ) and an Ebola epidemic ( ) that took the lives of 90 percent of the country s medical professionals. There is currently one doctor for every 30,000 40,000 patients. From May 4 to 14, a seven-member LCMS Mercy Medical Team visited Sierra Leone to offer physical and spiritual healing. During the week -long clinic, a total of 1,450 individuals were served, from 12-day-old babies to 100-year-old women. Injuries and conditions treated included amputations and stab wounds from the war, high blood pressure, fevers, malaria, dehydration, parasites and more. At the beginning of each clinic day, a devotion was shared with the crowds who were waiting to be seen by the medical staff. As patients completed their medical evaluations, a pastor prayed with them before they began their journey home. 7 40 Years of God s Blessings at Lutheran High School This year we are going to have multiple celebration opportunities for our alumni, their families, our past and present supporters, present and former staff members, and our whole faith community. We are getting ready for a year-long 40 th Anniversary series of events. The biggest is the all-school reunion weekend and service of gratefulness to be held on August 3, 4, and 5 of The kick-off weekend will include an opportunity on Friday, August 3 rd to gather in smaller alumni groupings at a few local establishments. A representative from the anniversary committee and a current faculty member will be at each site to help get the party started as people get back into town and for us locals to kick off the fun weekend. We hope to see most of our 1,500 alumni! Saturday will be an LHS community-wide party with food, beverages and music followed by the lighting of a traditional bon-fire like homecomings of the past. This will be on the school grounds and will include an open house of the school with displays from all 40 years of memories that our school has been in existence. The event is for alumni, parents of alumni, all present and former staff members and their families, and our beloved supporters. The school will be open from 5:30 p.m. til dark. Sunday, a 1 p.m. service of praise and celebration will be held in the LHS gymnasium. We will honor past and present faculty, staff, board members and administrators in a special processional. This service is for the entire community of past, present and future families who support Christian Education. As we honor our past, we also look to the future. We plan to be here another 40 years. Consider the changes that have taken place in the last 40 years of education. We need to be proactive and plan for the trends of the future making sure that our Mission of Preparing Christian Leaders One Student at a Time is at the forefront of our plans. This includes staying true to the biblical principles that have guided us since our inception. God uses all of us in different ways to serve Him in His Kingdom.
