3 Pastor s Message Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, The Lenten season will soon be upon us. Since Easter is early, (March 31) Ash Wednesday is also early. (February 13) We will once again have many special opportunities to hear God's word. Many people come to lenten worship and many do not. Of course it does no good for ones church to Pastor Darrel Bergelin have these special services if an individual doesn't plan on coming anyway. This year we again invite and encourage each one of you to take advantage of these special worship opportunities. All of our sermons for lent will center around the theme, "Names of Wondrous Love." Once again we will have a pulpit exchange with some of our neighboring LCMS Pastors. What a wonderful Savior we have, to think that He would give His life for us. To willingly die for another is an act of love that really has no equal. We can never doubt the deep love Christ has for us. To hear how some people in our world blame God for their troubles and problems, as if God were mean and out to get them is unthinkable for the true child of God. Our assurance is that the loving Lord walks with us each and every day. How comforting it is to know that we have help with our struggles. Each of His names depict an aspect of His love. 4 Page 4 Vicar s Message This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that people will go to on Valentine s Day to show their love. The ways in which people show their love is as varied as the people themselves. Some people buy cards and chocolate. Others go out on dates and spend time together. Everyone strives to show their love in a unique and special way. God loves us more than anyone in the world can. I am always awed by how much God loves us, because we do nothing to deserve His love. In fact, we deserve God s wrath and anger because of all of our sins. Because of our sinful nature we act upon our own desires instead of the desires of God. We do not always obey the 10 commandments. I have even heard it said that God cannot love a person because they have done too many sinful actions for God to love them. No matter how sinful we are, God still loves us. No matter how badly we act, we can trust that God loves us. It is because of His love that He sent Jesus to save us from our sins. He could have left us on our own, rebellious and trapped in our sins, but He did not. Jesus shows how much God loves us. He loves us so much that He died upon the cross to forgive all our sins. Jesus death shows without a doubt the love God has for us. Love is a two way street. God loves us and we love Him. It is the reason why we do not continue to live sinful lives. Rather, we obey the 10 commandments. God showed His love for us upon the cross and we show our love for Him by doing what He tells us to in the commandments. 6 Page 6 Elders Corner and Lent/Easter Elder s Corner The month of February we celebrate Ash Wednesday on the 13th. This begins our journey through Lent, preparing us for our Savior's resurrection on Easter. This is a great opportunity for us as Christians to put into perspective what our Lord has done for us. We would encourage all of our members to take advantage of these extra Lenten worship services. Dear Father in heaven, lead us to repentance, sparing us eternal death through your son Jesus, who was struck down that we would be bound up. Amen. 7 Congregation News Page 7 A Christian Funeral was conducted for Esther Boje at 6:00 p.m. on Friday Evening, January 11, 2013 at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. Pastor Bergelin officiated. May God send His comfort and strength to the Boje Family. Baptism Dane Timothy Blake and MyKenna Ann Weigert were baptized at Trinity on Saturday, January 26, Dane was born on June 13, 1992 and MyKenna was born on August 1, Their sponsors are Tom and Penny Damrow. Pastor Bergelin officiated. 8 Page 8 Congregation news Trinity Church Bus Trip We are in the process of planning a bus trip with St. Paul Lutheran Church from Lexington, Illinois for the end of September or the beginning of October. The cost will be finalized the beginning of February and will be put in the bulletin. Please call the church office if you are interested and have not signed up on the stewardship forms. Some of the places we are planning to see are: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum where we will enjoy a tour of the museum. Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY. The Creation Museum is a museum that brings The Pages of the Bible to life, casting its characters and animals in dynamic form and Placing them in familiar settings. Example. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory in Louisville Kentucky. Spirit of Jefferson Riverboat Dinner Cruise in Louisville KY. Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby). Country Music Hall of Fame. Tour of Nashville seeing the sites of downtown Nashville which includes the State Capitol, Ryman Auditorium, Honky Tonk Highway, Musicians current and former homes and much more. Grand Ole Opry.

12 Page 12 Lutheran High Highlights Teaching Skills In education circles, there has been a lot of emphasis and talk on developing 21st Century skills in our young people today. What is interesting, however, is that when you ask many educators and administrators what 21st Century skills are or how you develop them, they hesitate and do not answer with great confidence. Some think developing 21st Century skills means downloading YouTube clips on tax-purchased technological devices. Others talk about critical thinking skills and working well with others (haven t these skills been valued in all centuries?). Just for kicks lately, I ve been telling people around the Sheboygan Lutheran High School community that we are not just developing 21st Century skills in our students but 22nd Century skills. Take that Batman! Tongue in cheek, I tell people, as soon as the United States overcomes the nutritional deficiency problems and obesity crisis we face, people are going to live to 150 years of age. Thus, Lutheran High wants to stay ahead of the curve and on the cutting edge of skill development. In all seriousness, there are some neat and exciting ideas that can help reform and improve the education system in America. I think it is a good thing to focus on developing skills in our young people. But what skills are most important to be developed? Lutheran schools do something that other schools cannot do or choose not to do: We teach First Century skills to our young people today. The First Century was when the church was in its infant stages and the whole world needed to be told about what Jesus had done for them. If you have not had the chance recently, take a new look at the book of Acts and all that the early Christians endured and did to spread the Gospel and saving grace of Jesus Christ. They congregated together, prayed together, worshipped together. They lived in tough times and were the minority in terms of their belief in Jesus Christ as the one true Lord and Savior. They were persecuted and martyred for following the Way. Yet, Jesus never abandoned them. God blessed them and gave them the peace that surpasses all understanding through the power of the Holy Spirit. He did this for Christians in the First Century, and He does this for you and me. We need more book of Acts Christians in the world today and less people who pretend to act like Christians. Lutheran schools unapologetically teach, remind, schools and affirm their students to get in the Word, stay in the Word and spread the Word. Too many people are dying without knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. By God s grace and Jesus blood, Lutheran schools are privileged to teach, not only First Century and life eternal skills, but Biblical truths and the love of Jesus Christ. We are truly blessed.
