John 1:1 2 (ESV) Weekly Devotions (Advent 1) Catechism The Second Article and Meaning Redemption And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. Announcements Welcome: We extend a warm welcome to all who have come to worship with us today. As we are celebrating the Last Sunday of the Church Year, we focus on Christ the Judge returning to separate the sheep from the goats. Hear the Word of the Lord. 6 After worship today, Christmas Cards will be for sale in the multi-purpose room. Pre-orders are not necessary. You may buy from the inventory that is on hand. Also, along with cards, other small kitchen gadgets will be for sale for under $10 including various knives, pie servers, wire whips, knife sharpeners, dish cloths, scouring pads, and more. They would make great Christmas stocking stuffers and exchange gifts. If you would like to receive a copy of the Lutheran Witness in 2018, please sign the sheet on the south buffet. The order will be placed based on the number of signups on the sheet. Pastor Benkendorf will be out-of-town until this evening. In case of emergency, or need for pastoral care, please contact Pastor Dressler at (home and office) or (cell). Helping hands are requested to get Concordia Lutheran Church ready for Christmas. Christmas decorations will be put up and the Christmas tree decorated next Sunday, December 3, beginning at 1 p.m. Many helping hands will be greatly appreciated as we ready the church for Christmas. After prayerful consideration, the Nomination Committee has compiled the following list of people to serve in various offices (listed alphabetically). The slate of officers will be presented to the voters at the Budget Meeting in December. The list includes: Secretary (4-year term) Peggy Scholl, Kathy Stueve; UCLS Board of Education (2-year term) Angela Head, Heather Kassel; Elder (4-year term) Dale Burroughs, Brent Roth; Trustee (3-year term) Tyler Schmidt, Tony Scholl. If your name is on the list, please remember that God has gifted you with certain talents, and there are more than a few who believe that those talents can and should be used for a time in service to God s people here at Concordia. Being a child of God includes using your gifts and talents for the sake of others, unto the glory of God. Please prayerfully consider this as you see God s people asking you to serve. LYF Notes LYF-Sponsored Diaper Drive November Size 1 (preferred brands: Luvs, Pampers, Huggies, Wal-Mart, Dollar General) United in Christ Lutheran School (UCLS) Notes Minutes from the UCLS Board of Education Meeting on November 9 are still available today on the south buffet. Saxony Lutheran High School Notes Saxony Lutheran High School is looking for a volunteer to be the announcer at the home basketball games for boys and girls. If you are interested in helping in this way, please contact the school office at Neighboring Church & Community Notes The Old-Fashioned Christmas Walk will be held this Saturday, December 2, from 3-8 p.m. in Brazeau. The event will include the newest attraction A Night in Bethlehem. A Christmas Concert will be held at the church at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Tea Room will have sandwiches, baked goods, and refreshments available. A craft fair and live nativity will also be part of the event. Monetary donations to the Historical Society will be gratefully accepted. A Christmas Service of Readings and Carols will be held next Sunday, December 3, at 3 p.m. at Hill of Peace Lutheran Church, Friedenberg. The guest speaker will be Seminarian Jarod Koenig. Special music will be provided by the Immanuel Lutheran Church (Perryville) Men's Choir, with violinist accompaniment. 6

7 An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on Monday, December 4, from 2-7 p.m. in the Salem Lutheran School Gym, Farrar. A Breakfast and Bake Sale, sponsored by the Men s Club, will be held on Sunday, December 10, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church Hall, Apple Creek. The menu will include sausage, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, homemade coffeecake, fruit, and drink. The cost of the meal will be $8 for adults and $4 for children Carry-outs will be available. Donations Requested for Lutheran Home residents Many of the residents of the Lutheran Home have no family to share Christmas with, and some have no one to even visit them. The Lutheran Home s goal is to make sure each and every resident receives a Christmas gift. Currently, the Lutheran Home has over 250 residents on campus that they are trying to accommodate. Donations of inexpensive items such as lotion sets, tissues, gripper socks, chapstick, scarves, blankets, markers, devotion books, hand mirrors, puzzle books, and adult coloring books are being requested. Each item collected will be wrapped and given out at Christmas. All items can be dropped off at the Lutheran Home. Information about upcoming trips with Immanuel Lutheran Church Tour Group is posted on Concordia s bulletin board. Lutheran Family & Children s Services (LFCS) Notes The 30 th Annual LFCS Holiday Home Tour will be this Saturday, December 2, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $25 each at the LFCS Office (3178 Blattner Dr, Cape); Bank of Missouri locations in Cape Girardeau, Jackson, and Scott City; Sunny Hill Gardens & Florist (206 N Kingshighway, Cape); Patrick Furniture (1140 N Kingshighway, Cape); and Southeast Health Volunteer Services (1701 Lacy St, Cape). 8 Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Notes Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) currently serves the Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois areas by broadcasting The Lutheran Hour over KZIM 960 AM at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, LHM can no longer fund The Lutheran Hour over KZIM. The cost to air The Lutheran Hour over KZIM is $91.80 per week. Therefore, to continue this programming, LHM is requesting that local congregations or interested organizations or individuals financially support this ministry. If enough funds can be committed to this cause, LHM will continue their contract with KZIM. However, LHM has already had to sign the contract with KZIM for the coming year, trusting that sufficient funds can be raised to cover the cost. If your congregation, an organization, or you individually are willing and able to support future broadcasting of The Lutheran Hour over KZIM, you may send your donations to LHM, earmarked for The Lutheran Hour over KZIM.
