1 May 2016 LIVING SAVIOR Lutheran Church LIVING TODAY FOR ETERNITY MANY WORDS AND THE WORD The University of California, San Diego, published a study in 2009 of the number of words we encounter in a single day. The average American is bombarded by over 100,000 words of information (print, video and audio) every day. That s like reading through Leo Tolstoy s book, War and Peace, every four days! (from Nick Bilton, New York Times blog, 12/09/09) Because our modern world of information hits us with so many words each day, we may not always feel the impact of the great, powerful and holy words of the Bible, God s Word, when we encounter them. At times, we may even feel like the Bible is just another bunch of words that we have to process in our daily lives, which are already cram-packed with words. John s closing words in his Gospel acknowledge the fact that much more could have been written about Jesus: Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:25) However much we sometimes wish we had more information about Jesus or had a question answered by the Bible, John is not saying here that the Bible is incomplete. In fact, just in the previous chapter, he gives the true reason why the Bible was written in the first place: Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31) You see, the Bible could have been many times longer than it is, but God, in his wisdom, gave us just what we needed to believe in Jesus and have life today and into all eternity. I encourage you, as we enter into May, to pull out your favorite Bible, find a shade tree to sit under or a patio to sit on, and soak of some fresh air as you soak in The Word. Pizzas are available for pick-up and payment after church on the first Sunday of each month. To guarantee delivery, place your order any time before the prior Wednesday. The week will close with a church-wide picnic EVERYONE is invited! Registration is now open for kids ages 3 years old (must be potty trained) up to having completed 5th grade. 4 Important News Shopping Earns Us Money Kroger Community Rewards has contributed $ to Living Savior due to the seventeen LSLC households that shopped at Kroger between November and February and used their Community Rewards card. If you haven't yet, visit their website at and create an account! Don t forget as you re online shopping summer those deals to shop using AmazonSmile! Thanks to Jim Duhon and the cook team for providing the wonderful Fellowship meal on Sunday, April 17. The cheeseburgers were wonderful. Pictorial Directory The roster has been redone and returned to Lifetouch. Since the roster had to be redone, we were able to include our new members. Directories will be shipped May 5. Thanks for your patience. VBS 2016 July 5-9 9am - 12pm Volunteers Needed! Lots of help means little work for everyone involved. There are opportunities open in crafts, snacks, security (guys willing to help Dick Weise to patrol the parking lot during check-in and checkout), decorations, and crew leaders for both adults and youth. Decorating Committee We need your help with some items you may have in your recycling bin. We are looking for: carpet tubes (any size) wrapping paper tubes paper towel tubes green tissue paper brown paper grocery bags black plastic sheeting plastic 2 liter soda or water bottles swim tubes burlap If you can supply any of these items, please label them VBS and put them in the left-side stage storage closet in the fellowship hall. 5 PACN Baby Food & Formula Drive Mother s Day, Sunday, May 8 through Father s Day, Sunday, June 19 Instead of our traditional Baby Bottle fundraiser, we are collecting Similac Sensitive powder formula and any STAGE 1 baby foods. There will be a collection box in the Family Life Center. Monetary donations, cash, coins or checks, will also be collected. Please make checks payable to PACN, (NOT LSLC). Donations may be placed in the PACN bag located in the entrance/exit of the sanctuary or in the large Baby Bottle located in the Family Life Center. I pray that every family at Living Savior helps this Christian community program by giving ONCE during the drive. PACN is a non-profit pregnancy medical clinic that offers confidential services for women and men. They believe all people deserve access to unbiased, client-centered care that is relevant, compassionate and accurate, particularly when facing an unplanned pregnancy or sexual health concern. These services are available at no cost to clients. The centers offer pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, pregnancy consultations and medically accurate information about all pregnancy options; however, they do not offer or refer for abortion services. They also offer well woman exams and STD testing for both men and women. There are 2 locations, Conroe and Spring/The Woodlands. World Relief School Kits New Horizon Zone Spring Workshop Rescheduled for Saturday, May 21 8:30am - 1:00pm The location has been changed to St. Mark Lutheran Church in Conroe. We will be led by Katie Thomas, D.C.E Camp Ministry Consultant for Bethesda. Registration will be followed by a light breakfast. Dime Stocking Project Don t forget to add 5 dimes to your collection!! Thanks to all who contributed to the World Relief School Kits for this year. We were able to complete 89 kits and send off 10 boxes. We especially thank Nancy Ayres for donating her Thrivent Seed money which greatly helped purchase school supplies. The boxes were taken to Epiphany Church, the Ingathering place for this area, by Dick and Shirley Wiese and Al and I the day after Easter. From there they will be taken to Maryland where all the World Relief items will be distributed to needy countries. In the past we have contributed Health Kits and Sewing Kits which are always needed. Personal Quilts and Bar soaps are also requested. We are now starting to continue collecting School Kit items for next year. Keep your eyes open for school supply sales again.

6 MUSIC NOTES May flowers are abundant and a refreshing change after so many lost so much during the recent area flooding. Living Savior warmly welcomes into membership the Junior Confirmation Class of 2016 on Sunday, May 1 st at the 10:45 service! They are Tyler Angerhofer, Ellie Hadley, Christopher Mascardo, and Chase Vahrenkamp. The message title is This World and His Word. Oh, the things we face every day. We pray for these young folks to remain faithful to the Lord and His Church as they continue to grow in their Christian walk. We look forward to working together with them in this place and our community! THURSDAY, MAY 5 th is the MONTGOMERY NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER BREAKFAST to be held at the Lone Star Community Center (where we vote) on Lone Star Parkway, northwest of our church. What an amazing event this is. Community leaders lead us in thoughts and prayers for our fellow citizens, our communities, and our nation. This year s theme is Wake up America. The time is 8-9:30 a.m., and the speaker will be Dr. Beau Rees, Superintendent of Montgomery ISD. See Julie Krenz or Judy Kutach for table reservations asap. There is no charge. Last year we had two tables of folks from Living Savior who were blessed by this experience and time together in prayer with others from our area. MAY is full of Church Year Celebrations! First up on May 8 th is ASCENSION Sunday, where we celebrate Christ s Ascension into heaven which actually is historically always on a Thursday, 40 days after Easter Sunday. This is a day of much comfort for us, as Jesus ascends into heaven, preparing a place for us! In my Father s house are many mansions.john 14, check it out. The Christ Candle will leave the altar area this Sunday, and the paraments will remain white. (It is also Mother s Day.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the CHRISTIAN CHURCH is what we celebrate on Sunday, May 15 th, the Day of Pentecost! This is a WEAR RED day, and the paraments will be red as well. We will hear about our Holy Tutor, also known as the Helper, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, and many other great titles. This is such a joyful time to be reminded of the Spirit s presence in our lives! May 22 nd is TRINITY SUNDAY! For this mystical Sunday, the message will appropriately be We Shall One Day Know and see clearly what we don t totally understand now. The celebratory parament color is white. This is the one day in the church year we use the Athanasian Creed in lieu of the Apostle or the Nicene Creeds. (You will see why it is used only once a year.) Starting with May 29 th, we will GO GREEN!! Paraments will be green from now, all the way into October. Green reminds us of growth, learning, new things, and this is considered the teaching season of the church year as we focus on Christ s teachings, beginning with Faith, Prayer, and Perseverance. We will incorporate Memorial Day during opening. Hymn survey results will be in next month s article. I know you are on the edge of your seats wanting to hear them, so stay tuned. The LORD your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete. Deuteronomy 16:15

The Lutheran Hour, with wonderful pastors from our synod, is broadcast every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on FM radio. The call letters for this station are KHCB (Keeping Him Close By). During the week, this station has commercial free broadcasting of Christian programs and music.
