As the morning temperatures feel almost chilly and the daytime highs don t hit us quite so hard, we know that the long transition between summer and winter that we know as fall is upon us. Although the days grow shorter, we can enjoy outdoor festivals which bring families and communities closer together. October 31st marks two reasons for festivity. One is made up of all the traditions related to Halloween dressing up in costumes, kids gathering lots of candy and, of course, carving pumpkins. The other is one that we, as Lutherans, celebrate in particular: the beginning of the Reformation of the Church. It s the day that Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg. Those 95 Theses and the many other changes that the early Reformers proposed were momentous in restoring the Gospel to the Church. Now 498 years later we see that the spirit of the Reformation is still needed in Church. Like Luther, we don t seek change for change s sake, but we do continue to question how tradition may get in the way of proclaiming the Gospel. In Luther s day some of those harmful traditions were indulgences and religious pilgrimages. We also search for innovative ways to share the God s Word more effectively. The invention of the moveable type printing press made Bible more accessible. Today we have smart phones with a hundred translations of God s Word on them! Yes, we are very thankful that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) However, we also know that God himself adapted his way of sharing the message of the Messiah throughout the centuries through patriarchs, priests, prophets and apostles in many different languages and circumstances. It s exciting to see how He continues to work even in our own age to get his Word to those who need to hear it. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 31st, for you are invited to attend a Reformation workshop here at Living Savior entitled, you guessed it, Reformation: It s About Change. We ll start at 8:30am with a brief review of Reformation history; continue with some fun group activities related to change and close out the morning with a screening of the highly acclaimed, When God Left the Building. After lunch together, we ll look at some of the biblical models for change; wrestle with the challenges of change; celebrate the blessings it brings and close the day at 2:30pm. This free event is open to the public, so feel free to bring anyone with you. You might just realize that the Reformation isn t just something that happened long ago in Germany, but continues today, even in Montgomery.

The winners will be determined by a team of judges and a People s Choice Award will be given and all par=cipants will have the chance to vote for their favorite vehicle. 4 NOTES FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Ahhhh, there is a little spring in our steps as the weather ever so slightly is cooling, especially in the mornings as God wakes up His world for our enjoyment. The pace of worship planning is picking up and planning for Advent is already in the hopper. Sunday, OCTOBER 4 th is LWML Sunday where we learn about the Lutheran Women in Mission organization for all ladies in our church and throughout the nation. Their local mission endeavors of gathering together school supply backpacks, health kits, and Samaritans Purse Christmas Child boxes are just the tip of the iceberg compared with the national mission projects that are supported by the mighty Mite Box ministry that reaches all around the world. This Sundays theme is Don t Worry, Seek the Kingdom How appropriate for these days! This is a WEAR PURPLE SUNDAY! The 11 th and 18 th of October revolve around Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower and What Is the World to Me?. Just think on these words and see how they work together. The Heavenly Sounds Bell Choir will be playing on the 11 th. BRATS will be served by the Fellowship Team after late service on the 18 th. YUM! These two Sundays will also be the opportunity to turn in the names of family members/friends who have gone to be with the Lord since November of 2014, for remembrance on All Saints Sunday on November 1 st. October 25 th s message will be Perfect Priest, Perfect Offering. We will be Singing to the Lord in English and Spanish and will be Joyful, Joyful (we adore Thee)! This is also the date of our Clergy Appreciation Month Celebration with a cake in honor of Pastor Bailes during the Fellowship time. This will also be an opportunity to participate in a Paper Shower for Pastor, Cheryl, and family. This means anything paper towels, napkins, copy paper, tissues, etc. would be appropriate. Thank you for participating in the Prayer Calendar for Pastor and family. This year, it will go with them all the way to CUBA on the mission trip! By the way, cards, notes, and random acts of kindness continue to be a part of Clergy Appreciation Month! How exciting is this.november 1 st is a celebration combo of REFORMATION and ALL SAINTS SUNDAYS. This is a WEAR RED DAY! We will be blessed to have guest brass from Living Word Lutheran Church (The Woodlands) along with our own awesome talent! Even better yet, our brass will be playing at Living Word on the 25 th for their Reformation Celebration! Brothers and sisters in Christ serving together in His Kingdom. You might be wondering how to go about placing flowers on the altar.there is a Flower Chart on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall that starts the process. Put your name and the occasion on the line for the date you want on the chart. Put a $25 check in the offering plate and put FLOWERS for (date) on the memo line. Our flower chairman, Nancy Sanders orders the flowers and gets them to the church. After the late service, you are welcome to take the flowers home in your own container, or return the vase to the kitchen in the annex asap, please. Do you like the meditative hymns during communion but we re not singing them? Please know that it is perfectly fine to hum the tune. You can even do this when you are not in the pew! This is all a part of worship. This is a tip from your friendly Worship Committee! Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! Psalm 100:4

5 Mary-Martha Guild News On the first Sunday in October we celebrate LWML, Lutheran Women in Mission and this year it falls on October 4th. The ladies of the Mary-Martha Guild have been working hard throughout the year raising funds to support Missions. Breakfast with Santa, collecting Mites and school supplies for School Kits for Lutheran World Relief are some of the projects. Funds from Breakfast with Santa were sent to our Seminary Food Banks, Bible Translaters and Missionaries, PCAN, The Women's Center, Redeemed Ministries (for abused women) Poblo International, Islata Lutheran Mission Human Care, Bethesda-Tomball,Water to Thrive (wells in Africa) Hospitality House Huntsville. We have also donated several Banners for our church. From the Mites collected, the Texas District keeps most of them and only sends a small percentage to the National Office to St Louis. The goal for the Texas District is to distribute $ to Missions by next June. The National Mission Goal was $ so you see the power of the mighty Mite collected on a monthly basis. The Mary-Martha Guild is hosting the New Horizon Zone Fall Rally this Saturday, October 3rd from 9:30 til 1 pm and invites all ladies to join us. Our speaker will be Larry Odelius from " Operation Christmas Child", Samaritan's Purse. Lunch is provided. It s That Time of the Year Again Back-To-School!! Are you going school shopping? While you re out shopping for your child s school supplies or maybe on your way through the store, why not pick up some items for the Lutheran World Relief School Kits? Back to school items are on sale now and the LWML is collecting for the Kits which we will assemble before Palm Sunday next year. Sixty backpacks have been purchased and our goal is to fill all of them! Items needed are: notebooks (70 sheet ruled 8 x 10 1/2 ) #2 unsharpened pencils with erasers sharpeners rulers (30cm on one side and inches on the other) blunt scissors ballpoint pens (no gel pens) erasers boxes of either 16 or 24 crayons Collection containers will be in the Fellowship Hall or Church entry. Monetary donations are also accepted. (please make checks out to Mary-Martha, LWML). As always, thank you for your donations. Reminders!! Don t forget to continue to add dimes to your Dime Stocking! Also, continue to collect Mites and deposit them in the large Mite box the first Sunday of each month. Small Mite boxes are available, but are not necessary for collecting.

6 LSLC Stewardship Partnership in Missions Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15 So, we tithe.where does it all go? LSLC tithe supports the LCMS Texas District in it s missions. This month we highlight Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSSS). We all grow up but none of us gets to choose how. We don t get to choose between a house filled with love or one with anger; parents who support us or ones who tear us down. We don t get to choose how we are brought up in this world but we can choose how the next generation is. The mission of LSSS is to break the cycle of child abuse by empowering children, families and communities. It s not just about raising children in a safer environment. It s about raising expectations for what a childhood should be. And it s going to take all of us. Our Mission, To break the cycle of child abuse by empowering children, families and communities, focuses on improving long-term outcomes for all Texas children and reducing recidivism in child abuse by focusing on five key markers that we know will forge a path to a future free from abuse. This requires an entirely new way of thinking; and requires the whole community to be involved. While there he started a Men s Fishing Retreat in April What began with 35 men on Lake Whitney has grown to a fishing and golf and motorcycle gathering of over 200 men on the last weekend of April each year. This fall with the men of Resurrection and the friends they invite, I will use material from Wes Yoders book entitled Bond of Brothers: Connecting with Other Men beyond Work, Weather, and Sports. Walt is blessed to be married 44 years to his fifth grade sweetheart and they have two married daughters and five grandchildren. (Pastor Ric has participated in two of Pastor Walt s Prayer Retreats in the past and knows we will be blessed as we bond with this brother.) Sign Up has already begun!
