1 Pine Lines Pine Shores Presbyterian Church July 2017 The Mission of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church is to encourage, equip and empower each other to serve the needs of a hurting and broken world by sharing the hope and joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. I ve been pondering how to say what I m about to say. How s that for an opening sentence. Hope I got your attention. Can you hear the suspenseful music building in the background? I ve been pondering what to say about the partisan politics of the day and where our country is going and the tension. Rachel is on one shoulder and Sean on the other. I have so much insights, so much wisdom and so much wit to share with you. I don t even know where to begin. So, I won t because I m just messing with you - nothing political this time around. But I do want to say something. It s personal and it s corporate. I need and want to say thanks to Lee Layton. For more than 10 years Lee has served as Treasurer. Lee has been a steady presence in the life of Pine Shores. Think for a moment about the journey we ve been on together during that time. We not only weathered the great economic down turn in 2008 we chose faithfulness. We did more than survive. God used us for ministry. Lee was only a part of that because each one of you, individually made the choice not to live in fear but remained faithful in your living and giving. What Lee did was to guide us in making decisions that I believe pleased God during that rather fragile time. During his tenure we paid-off the mortgage. We completed the 6.2 million dollar building project which included a new Sanctuary, our renovated community center and a park-like setting in the neighborhood. Pine Shores is debt free after only 15 years. (Every time I say it or hear that phrase it makes me breathe easier.) You did that, we did that together and Lee helped us maneuvere our way through the obstacles. Lee also served on the Board of Bay Village during an important time and under the leadership of Ken Schepple, and others, steered Bay Village toward financial security and a promising future. The truth is Karen and I have depended on Lee a lot over these years. His office was just down the hall. His knowledge just a few steps away accruals, amortization and audit trails subsidiary accounts and write-down/write-off all part of my learnings. (They never taught us the important stuff at seminary but that s what Lee taught us.) His wisdom only a question away. His faith prevalent every day. None of us are saints. Just ask Karen about me (and just ask Rose about Lee) but I believe that many of us, including Lee, try to embody core characteristics of Christ-like living every day. God has blessed us with special people who have touched our lives in significant and holy ways and Lee is one of those people for me and for us. I would be remiss if I didn t mention Rose and their partnership in life and ministry. The fruit of the Spirit is a life that produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Together their life has been very productive and fruitful. I am reminded of the words that come from the Wisdom literature in the Hebrew Scriptures which say there is a time for every matter under heaven. The time has come for Lee to retire as Treasurer. I will miss his steady presence and his constant vigilant eye on the finances of Pine Shores. We re in good shape and the path forward looks amazing. On behalf of the beloved of Pine Shores we say thanks. Thank you Lee, for your faithfulness, for living a worthy life, for honoring God, for guiding us toward a promising future, for reminding us to continue to commit ourselves to building upon the foundation given to us, and to leave a legacy of faithfulness to those yet to come. Well done Lee and thank you for all you did as treasurer, for all you will continue to do and for who you are in Christ. Written by Rev. Dr. Bruce Wismer Co Pastor at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church

Friday, August 18th, 6:30 p.m. YAM Kick-off Night Children s Chapel in July Children s ministry is extremely important in our faith because we are teaching our future leaders and teachers about being rooted in Christ and living disciples of God s Word. Children s Ministry may even be the most important ministry in the church because in many cases it could be the first place a child encounters Jesus Christ. While research shows us that parents remain the most important faith influencers in our children s lives, ministry plays an important part in coming alongside families to teach our beliefs and practices. Starting in July, the children of the Church will get to experience this ministry and are invited to join our Summer Intern, Mary Moore Driggers, after Time with the Children in Worship in Children s Chapel. Children s Chapel is a time of worship and a place for the children of the church to experience community. While in Children s Chapel we will be learning the same Bible stories taught in that Sunday s worship service and expand upon them in our time together. The same style of worship will be brought into the classroom during the children s time together and the same lessons will be taught except it will be more relatable for the children who are present. We are very excited to get started with our summer curriculum starting Sunday, July 9, The first Sunday in July there will be no Children s Chapel which is on July 2 because we will be serving communion in worship, which the children of the church will participate in. The following Sunday s we will be learning about worship styles and how our Church Service operates. We hope you will share your children with us so that we can worship with them in our time together.

7 July Page 7 Musical Notes The Chancel Choir s summer schedule continues on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. in the choir room and then at 9:15 a.m. we go into warm up for the day s worship service. No mid-week rehearsals. This schedule will continue into August. This a great opportunity to try us out. Wonderful fellowship and folders of great music are waiting for you. Interested in learning how to ring handbells? Want to try them out and then possibly join one of our groups in the fall? Contact our Director of Music, Rick Holdsworth, and he will set up a time to meet with you and teach you all the basics that you will need. We ve just completed an update to our Allen organ in the sanctuary. Besides the original Allen organ sounds, we now have the capacity to have other organ sounds through computer software and downloaded organ files. The new sounds we are currently using are from a Schantz pipe organ that was installed at St. Philip s ELCA Church, Fridley, MN in You may notice from the sanctuary that there is a black box to the right of Wayne on the organ bench. This is the touch screen monitor that allows Wayne to select the specific sounds of the Shantz digitized instrument. If you are interested in learning more about this new technology, feel free to come up to the organ after worship on Sunday morning. If you ve been in the sanctuary, you will have noticed that our new flat panel TV monitors are installed. These are to enhance our worship and allow folks who have some vision issues to be able to see the scripture passages, hymn texts and spoken responses more clearly. July 2nd Behaving July 16th The Great Reversal July 23rd The Great Awakening July 30th Performing Awakening Estate Planning If you would like to include a gift to Pine Shores in your will: There are a number of ways to combine charitable gifts (also known as bequests) with your estate plans. Gifts can take the following forms: A specific amount: You can direct that a particular dollar amount be transferred to Pine Shores. Specific property: You can designate that a certain asset, such as real estate, artwork or other valuables, be used to fund ministry and mission here at Pine Shores. Such a bequest should be worded carefully, as the assets you own may change over time. A percentage: A percentage of your estate can be designated for Pine Shores, thus ensuring that your gifts remain in proportion to other bequests. All or a portion of the residue: Will provide ongoing financial support of the mission and ministry of Pine Shores. Your will and long-range plans deserve careful attention. Prayerfully consider the impact and legacy that you can have in the future by including Pine Shores in your will. If you have questions please contact Treasurer Allan Beck at Family Promise We will be hosting Family Promise during the week of July 23rd through 30th. We need your help especially during the summer months when many of our members are away on vacation. We ll need volunteers to make dinner for the guests, others to spend the early evening hours with them, and overnight hosts. If you can help, please call the church office at or sign up on Sunday mornings at worship. Thank you! Canes and walkers will be accommodated but we are unable to handle wheelchairs.
9 July Page 9 Showing Hospitality Welcome? Remember that old adage, You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Applied to a worshipping community, what that tells us is how important it is to greet everyone not just those we already know with a smile, a handshake, a welcoming hello, a friendly glad to see you today! Being friendly on a Sunday morning is not just the role of the designated greeters at the doors. What impression do you think we make when a guest walks through those doors past the greeters and is met with the backs of people engaged in conversation with others they already know? What idea of Pine Shores do guests receive when no one in worship turns to them to welcome them? What difference do you think it would make if each one of us would pause to meet someone we don t know on a Sunday morning? I ll bet every guest would leave saying that s the friendliest church in town!! and come back the next week. Live Sunday Worship Webcast We have some great features available for our members and friends through our website. If you can t get to church on Sunday morning, go to our webpage at 9:45 a.m. and click on the Live Sunday Worship Webcast in the 'Quicklink' box to view and listen to the entire worship service. Missed a Sunday and want to watch the sermon? Go to the Worship Information tab then the Sermons tab, to view the recorded video sermon. You can also view Sunday bulletins, the Pine Lines newsletter, and sign up for upcoming events and dinners through our webpage. Updating Your Information Has your address or phone number changed? Have you moved? If so, have you contacted the church office so that we can update our records? If not, please send an to finance@pineshorespres. org with your updated information. It s hard for us to keep in touch if we don t have your current information in our files. Stewardship Signs of healthy stewardship in a congregation: Hospitality: Everyone is welcomed and needed. Everyone has something important to contribute. Communities known for the vitality of their faith and for the quality of their ministry invariably inspire others to participate in ministry and to be generous in their time, talents and their financial support. Prayer: Successful stewardship is always rooted and grounded in prayer. Committed Leadership: If your leadership are committed givers then the congregants will follow their lead. Recommitment: Effective stewardship is expressed not in a single program, but rather in a constant reminder to commit one s very self to living Christlike lives. Outreach: The body needs programs to involve members in tangible ways to meet real needs. Lay Participation: A key ingredient is the personal witness of those who share testimony in the ways giving matters in their day to day lives. Accountability: Constant accountability is fundamental to good Stewardship. If you have not had the opportunity to respond please call the church office and talk to Elder/Teasurer Allan Beck or the financial secretary Angela Hall. New Administrative Assistant Marilyn Miller has joined the Pine Shores staff as the Administrative Assistant. She grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Vermont. She graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, majoring in painting. Marilyn has experience in graphic design and has worked in publishing for many years. Her son, Dan, attends Florida State University and she has a beagle named Cuddles. She feels very blessed to be a part of the Pine Shores family.
