7 PARISH COLLECTION Sunday 8 th Loose Envelopes SO Thank you for your generosity. Fr Larkin Note: As we have had some more parishioners switching to standing orders recently, the total for envelopes will reduce. A new total for standing orders (which should increase) will be published when the information is available from the bank. PARISH LENDING LIBRARY (NEW SELECTION) As many of you will know we have a small library of books in the parish centre lounge. These books are available to borrow by any interested persons. They are free to borrow. The only requirement is signing a borrowing log so that we can know where they have gone. Over the next few months there will be FIVE titles (chosen at random) which are highlighted here to bring them to your attention. There is a massive range of topics covered and this section will hopefully encourage you to check over the stock and further your reading. Enjoy! These selections will stay in the bulletin for two weeks at a time. TITLE AUTHOR OUTLINE Psalms of a Laywoman a book of religious poetry. The Four Loves Studying War No More? From Just War to Just Peace Edwina Gateley C.S. Lwis Brian Wicker (editor) Edwina Gateley shares her experience of God and miracles and revelations. Many are painful and shot with struggles and loneliness (God s absence is as powerful as God s grace). She gives testimony to God s action in the world today and God s call to all of us to become fully and actively involved in calling forth the Kingdom. The four loves the author distinguishes are Affection, Friendship, Eros and Charity. C S Lewis sees how each merges into another. He discerns the deceptions and distortions which can render the first three, the natural loves, dangerous without the sweetening grace of Charity the divine love. Can we have a future without war? Do we have a future with war? This book attempts to answer these questions. It brings together more than 20 experts to debate the issue, by considering what the Church should be saying about war and peace. 7
8 God of Surprises Living Words Gerard W Hughes (SJ) Michel Quoist Jesus said: The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. This book has only one purpose: to suggest ways of finding treasure in what we may consider a most unlikely field ourselves. It is a guide book to the inner journey in which we are all engaged and has much to say to those who have a love/hate relationship with the Church. To which they belong or once belonged. Comprising a series of homilies delivered on French television in recent years, Living Words has immediacy and relevance. Readers will readily identify with many of the situations he describes: children growing up and growing away from their parents; people trapped by the consumerism of modern society; the masks people assume in order to hide from one another; the endless and often futile activities of living.
