3 about who we are, about the mistakes we make, and about how well or poorly we care for others. In this spirit, let us offer our prayers to God. Prayer of Confession Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 5 Offering Prayer God, our Father, with these gifts we offer you our lives to do your work in the world. Take our bodies and our minds, our work and our leisure, our relationships with other people, our friendships and our family life, our dreams and our doubts, our faith and our plans for the future. All rights reserved. BENEDICTION Dick Avery POSTLUDE Praise to the Lord Organ Arr. Edward Broughton Elder Judy Potter is available for prayer after the service. In the pulpit today: Dick Avery grew up in suburban Chicago. Through the ministry of Young Life he entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Dick attended Princeton University. After his freshman year, he spent the summer working with a Presbyterian missionary in Yucatan, Mexico where he sensed a call to professional ministry. After attending Fuller Theological Seminary for two years, Dick spent a year in South Africa and Lesotho as an intern with African Enterprise, which seeks to evangelize the cities of Africa. He returned to Fuller and received his Master of Divinity in The next ten years Dick served congregations in San Diego, Burbank and Monrovia, California. Dick and Judy were married in In 1977, Dick

8 became pastor of Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, Spokane, where he served 34 Years until his retirement in Dick has been active in our presbytery and served on the board of Habitat for Humanity-Spokane. Dick and Judy are on the board of South by Northwest Spokane Young Life. They have three children, Kristen, Peter and Lindsay, and six grandkids and four great grandkids. Today s Lectionary Readings Nehemiah 8:1 3, 5 6, Corinthians 12:12 31a Psalm 19 Luke 4:14 21 Reflection The Old Testament year of jubilee to which Jesus refers in his first sermon what some have called his mission statement was a time set aside every fifty years to forgive financial debt and redistribute the land among the people. Why do you think God envisioned a year of jubilee, and what might that look like in our world today? Household Prayer: Morning Holy One thank you for the gift of this new day. Help me to stay attentive to your creation and mindful of your teachings as I travel through it. Empower me to see and spread the good news of your grace for all people. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Holy One, thank you for the gift of today. Thank you for all the ways that I saw your glory and learned your teachings, beyond speech and words, in the course of this day. As I drift to sleep this night, draw me closer to you, my rock and my redeemer. Amen.
