Editor: Joyce Weaver, joycew@flcch.org PASTOR S WORD Martin Luther: The Idea That Changed the World 've been a Lutheran all my life. I also enjoy studying history. That I gives me an advantage as the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation comes around (official date: October 31, 2017). My experience and interest, I know, are not universal. I invite you to learn more this month. PBS is currently airing the documentary of this title with dramatic reenactments and commentary by modern scholars. I think it is probably safe to say that nearly every Lutheran minister in the church today has studied with one or more of the professors featured. Included as well are Roman Catholic and other Protestant leaders. I appreciated that the film uses this simple and yet deep question to summarize Luther's work: Am I a good person? Luther s study about this question and his answer inspires our worship and mission today -- that in Jesus Christ we have hope because God forgives and inspires us to do good work in the world. The film also raises up Luther's use of the media -- and Guttenberg's printing press -- to spread his message widely. It was filmed on location in Germany and is faithful to Luther's story -- and especially his influence on the Western World. It includes the contrast of those who used his writings for good and for evil, including how the Nazi's of WWII used his words to support the attacks on Jews, and how his writing influenced an African American pastor so deeply that he changed his name -- and his son's -- to Martin Luther King. 1 Pastor s Word continues, page 2

2 Pastor s Word continued You may watch the documentary online at this time. Remember, too, that First Lutheran will present it's own Reformation Drama twice this month. On Wednesday, October 25, and Sunday, October 29. More details appear in this issue of the Caller on page 7. Pastor Jill Bergman and the drama ministry group will retire this production after this year, and plans are underway for a new production next year. May the Spirit of the Reformation inspire you, Pastor Bonnie Wilcox The day Pastor Bonnie received her own Playmobil Martin Luther -- just a little excited! HURRICANE / MINNEAPOLIS TO HOUSTON TRIP Pastor Bonnie is gathering names of those who would be interested in a trip to Houston (Nov ) to help with restoration/general labor. If interested, contact Joyce at the church office, , joycew@flcch.org. Sign-ups will also be available on the website soon. Help rebuild lives in Houston after Hurricane Harvey! Nov12-18, 2017 Skilled and unskilled workers will work under the direction of local disaster response leaders -- from mucking out to rebuilding walls. Our work will depend on the needs of the community at the time we are present. We would benefit from 2-3 people who will plan and prepare meals for the crew out of a church kitchen. This is a 20-hour bus ride; we hope to arrive in Houston ready to get at least a half day of work done on Monday. We'll work through Friday and drive straight through to return to the Twin Cities on Saturday. Accommodations: We expect we will sleep on the floor of a church in Houston. Each person needs to bring their own sleeping mat, bag and pillow. Showers will be available each day. Coordinated by First Lutheran Church of Columbia Heights, Minnesota. This trip is open to anyone who is a willing worker. Cost: We will divide the cost of the bus and drivers, as well as an estimate of cost for food during the week, by the number of people on the bus. We estimate this will be about $400 per person. 2

8 FINANCIALS Treasurer Talk Written by Chad Habeck, FLC Financial Treasurer o, last month, the previous treasurer, John Peterson, S and I, the current treasurer, stood up in front of the congregation for a quick temple talk. For those of you who weren t there, or for those that were, but are still trying to figure out what our message was, let me try and explain it here in writing. Hopefully by putting a message here, we can try and help to explain a little bit about how our church finances work. The big picture is that we have multiple buckets of funds, and not all of them are allowed to cross over or comingle. This is because some funds are restricted as designated by the donor to be used for funding outside of operational funding. For example, we have an endowment fund that is amazingly close to 1 million dollars! When it reaches this mark, and I believe it will before year end, John Peterson will not only do a celebratory temple talk, but he will probably do a dance too! However, those funds are specified as dollars forever, meaning the principal balance cannot be touched. But the good news is that we are able to use a small percentage of the earnings to help fund special projects each year. For example, we had about $36,000 to use this year. With this, we were able to buy new computers for the staff and we were able to help fund the Mission Jamaica trip; it is also being used to fund new furniture for our commons area, etc. However, we cannot use these funds to pay maintenance bills, or help fund our payroll. We have a General Fund to pay our operational costs (payroll, administrative needs, etc.) and we have a Mortgage and Maintenance fund to pay the Mortgage (the current balance owed is $2.3 million) and for fixing up things, like the church parking lot, the roof, or broken windows, etc. The general fund gets most of its money from annual congregational giving. Each year, we set up an annual budget for both income and expenses. The general fund budgeted amount for 2017 envelope giving is $280,000. At our current pace, we will end up about $40,000 short of that total. Thankfully, we do get money from our school tenant, which has really helped to bridge the gap the past few years, but our goal is to be able to use those funds to help with mission and ministry, not just paying the bills. We are here after all, to help others and to spread the word of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. So, the message is that we all need to rally around each other, pray for each, and give what we can, to help make up the deficit in operational fund raising. Like John said, we ve made up much more in much less time before, so we are extremely confident that we will be able to do so once again. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or John, if you have any further questions on our finances, or what it s like to be treasurer! 9 FAITH COMMUNITY NURSE Cartoon used with permission by Steve Sack, StarTribune Opioid Epidemic Office on Women's Health, US Dept. of Health and Human Services National Institute of Health on Drug Abuse Whether you watch, read, or scroll to get your news, you have undoubtedly seen the reports our country is in the midst of an epidemic of overdose and deaths as a result of opioid misuse. In 2015, 33,091 Americans died as a result of opioid overdoses. That's higher than the number of people killed in car accidents, and it's a 15.6% increase from the previous year. Each day, more than 90 Americans die after overdosing on opioids. How did this happen!! In the late 1990's, pharmaceutical companies reassured the medical community that patients would not become addicted to prescription pain relievers, and healthcare providers began to prescribe them at greater rates. This subsequently led to widespread diversion and misuse of these medications. The misuse of and addiction to opioids, such as heroin, morphine, and other prescription pain medicines is a serious national problem that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. Devastating consequences including not just overdoses, but also the rising incidence of newborns who are delivered to addicted mothers; and increased spread of infectious disease including HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV). The effects of opioids on the brain and body: Both prescription opioid drugs, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and heroin work through the same mechanism of action. Opioids reduce the perception of pain by binding to opioid receptors, which are found on nerve cells in the brain and periphery, as well as in other organs of the body. The binding of these drugs to opioid receptors in reward regions in the brain produces a sense of well-being, while stimulation of opioid receptors in deeper brain regions results in drowsiness and that can lead to respiratory depression, which can lead to overdose deaths. People who use opioids nonmedically may seek to intensify their experience by taking the drug in ways that deliver the drug more rapidly to their brains. For example, extended release oxycodone (a commonly prescribed pain pill) is designed to release slow and steadily into the bloodstream when taken orally, which minimizes its euphoric effects. People who abuse pills for their mood elevating effects may crush them to snort or inject the drug, which only increases euphoria but increases the risk for serious medical complications, such as and substance use disorders, coma or respiratory arrest. Tolerance occurs when the person no longer responds to the drug as strongly as he or she initially did, thus necessitating a higher dose to achieve the same effect. The tolerance contributes to the high risk of overdose. Another contributing factor to the risk of opioid-related morbidity and mortality is the combined use of benzodiazepines (BZD's) or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants like some sleeping pills, even if these agents are used correctly. Patients with chronic pain who use opioids along with BZD's are at high risk for overdose. Similar risks are observed when opioids are combined with alcohol. Significant efforts have been undertaken across the United States to reduce diversion and misuse of prescription opioids and to reduce opioid overdoses and related deaths. Next month I will report on the national efforts to curb the prescription opioid epidemic---there is too much to report in just one article!!
