1 First Lutheran Caller NOVEMBER 2016 The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it. Psalm 24:1 Friends at First Lutheran, It s time we get to the heart of the matter. God has been good to us! We have a beautiful, useful building. We have meaningful ministries that bless our neighborhoods. We have each other as a cloud of witness and support. We have Jesus as our source of life. We need nothing more. And, yet, we have more. We have warm clothes and cars and houses. We have food and toys and books. We have jobs and friends and experiences. We have an abundance. We have so much abundance that sometimes we become insulated by it and forget that God is at the heart of it all. In the story of Jonah, the great city of Nineveh was about to be overthrown by God for its evil ways. The king of Nineveh, who had never worshiped God, suddenly realized the vulnerability of his city to God. He instructed all humans and animals to cover themselves with sackcloth as a sign that they recognized their dependence on God s mercy. The people of Nineveh quickly realized that everything in their city existed only because God allowed it to exist. The matter wouldn t exist unless God s heart willed it to be. During the month of November, we invite our community at First to take stock of the matter in our lives. Look at the matter that makes up our congregational life as well as our personal lives. Notice those things we take for granted, like our cars, microwaves, relationships, laptops, chairs, coffee. These things only exist for us because God s heart has willed it to be. God blesses us with these things. On November 6 in worship, each person will receive a square of sackcloth (well, burlap, because we didn t really know how to find sackcloth). Please put that sackcloth on the matter of your lives as a reminder of God s heart behind it. If you are social media savvy, take a picture and post it on our church s Facebook page to help us all to see God s heart in the matter. Also on November 6, we will have commitment cards available for you from the Stewardship Board. These cards are very different from the Stewardship drives of the past. They are meant to highlight and direct our response to this awakening inspired by the sackcloth and Jonah. Because God is at the heart of all the matter of our lives, how shall we respond? If we have more matter (talent, stuff, community, natural resources, grace, justice, knowledge, money, or time) than we need, how is God directing us to share it with those who have less? Please return the bottom portion of the card in worship on November 20. This is a time not only for reflection but also for taking action. We are God s heart in the matter. 2 CHILDRENS MINISTRY Page 2 Thankfulness is the Difference Between I Need and I Want A few years ago I started paying attention to when and where I used the phrase I need And I noticed that I was saying I need A LOT about things I wanted but didn t really need. I wanted a new suit, but I didn t really need one. I really wanted my dream car - a 1978 baby blue Mercedes, but I certainly didn t need one. I Need is a really tempting phrase. It has a sense of urgency that really gets people s attention. But it also made me feel really ungrateful. Like I was being deprived of my needs So I decided to start saying I want And something unexpected happened. I started to realize that I already have SO MANY of my needs met. I started to be thankful that I have clean water, I have a warm place to live, I have friends and family who love me. And when I stopped focusing on my wants, I was more able to focus on helping other people meet their needs. And as we enter the season of Thanksgiving maybe you will consider how you use the words I need when you really mean I want Let me know how it goes. 3 WORSHIP AND MUSIC By Matthew Anderson, Director of Music Ministry Page 3 The Lord Now Sends Us Forth ELW 538 This month we ll learn a new hymn in worship, The Lord Now Sends us Forth ELW 538. Originally thought to be written by an anonymous author, it s actually written by a Cuban Pentecostal pastor named José Aguiar. He serves as pastor of the Sovereign Grace Church in Cuba and serves as coordinator of the Cuban Council of Churches in La Habana province. Here is the English singing translation: The Lord now sends us forth with hands to serve and give, to make of all the earth a better place to live. The angels are not sent into our world of pain to do what we were meant to do in Jesus name; That falls to you and me and all who are made free. Help us, O Lord, we pray, to do your will today. Our hymnal is a wonderful collection of songs from the Body of Christ throughout the world. Take a moment to reflect on this text and pray for our mission together. (Background information from Hymnal Companion to Evangelical Lutheran Worship by Paul Westermeyer.) Save the Date Lessons and Carols on Dec :00 a.m. This year our Christmas concert music will be presented during the 10:00 a.m. worship. The Senior Choir and Campanile will present, Prophets and Angels, A Festival of Lessons and Carols. Featuring texts by Herb Brokering and music by local composer Aaron David Miller, the service points us toward the birth of our Savior. I hope you join us for this festive celebration and invite others as well. Sunday Scripture Readings November 6 Jonah and God s Mercy Jonah 1:1-17; 3:1-10, 4:1-11 We learn of Jonah s attempted escape from God, and God s mercy on the people of Ninevah. November 13 God Calls Isaiah Isaiah 6:1-8 Call of Isaiah: Holy, holy, holy is God; the prophet s sin, cleansing, and sending. This text is the basis of Holy, holy, holy which we sing during the Communion liturgy. November 20 God Promises a New Covenant Jeremiah 36:1-8, 21-23, and 31:31-34 Jeremiah s scroll calls for repentance, but the king burns it. The prophet promises a new covenant, written on the heart. Our whole life is an Advent, a time of waiting for the ultimate, for the time when there will be a new heaven and a new earth, when all people will be brothers and sisters. -Dietrich Bonhoeffer November 27 Daniel s Hope in God Daniel 6:6-27 The story of Daniel and his deliverance from the lions den. God s kingdom shall never be destroyed.

A video will be shown and 2 Gideons will talk about their personal experiences being a Gideon. Many lives have been won for Christ by Gideons spreading the good News of Jesus Christ by giving out New Testaments. The local Gideon camp (Minneapolis North Camp) has passed out pocket Testaments to Columbia Heights, Fridley and Spring Lake Park. When we pass out Testaments we get encouragement from people passing by. While giving out Testaments at Augsburg a person came up and said he had burned his Bible. The Gideon was shocked. The man received the spirit of conviction and turned his life over to Jesus. Inside the pocket Testament are scripture passages which address a variety of needs, stress, depression and grief to name a few. When passing out Testaments at the U of M someone pointed out a passage on stress that really touched that person. You can see it on their face. Handing out a Testament to students is like planting a seed. To give to the Gideons the address is, P. O. Box 32182, Fridley, MN If you wish to help spread the Good News by making a donation, $5 buys a Bible and $1.40 buys a pocket New Testament. You may also chose to buy Gideon Bibles in memory of a lost loved one or in honor of a special occasion for a family member or friend. There is a Gideon display of cards for these purposes behind our reception desk in the Commons.

10 Page 10 November Faith Community Nurse Notes Loneliness As winter starts to set in many of you do not get out as often and find it hard to get to church. This is not an article to berate you to come to church, but to make you aware of the effects of loneliness and isolation. A University of Kent study showed that loneliness contributes to health problems such as psychological stress, high blood pressure, sleep problems, depression, and cognitive decline. The Journal of American Medical Association(JAMA) study of people who identified themselves as lonely were 59% more likely to lose the ability to perform tasks of daily living and 45% more likely to die early than those who do not identify themselves as lonely. In another study it showed a 64% chance of developing dementia due to chronic loneliness, along with an increase of depression. We do need to be aware that people may be reluctant to admit to feeling lonely. The stigma attached to the issue is a real barrier that needs to be overcome, and this can be done in a way that organizations, such as churches and senior centers help with services. Simple steps to connect help fight loneliness. Isolation takes planning and effort. Consider the following strategies: Reach out to family and friends, even if it is with a phone call. A quick text on your phone can improve your well-being and provide a pick-me-up. Make contact with someone on a regular basis. Have no transportation? Take advantage of dr iver ser vices thr ough a r etir ement center or gover n- ment-sponsored affordable ride program (like Metro Mobility) so you can get out of the house. For more info call , or go to Call the church office ( by Friday) for a ride on the bus for the 10AM church service. Join a club that interests you, book club, music club, choir, Bible study, Young at Heart outings. Or become a volunteer at an organization you support. Help at church reception desk, Mission Workshop, mailing the Caller. Get a pet, if you are physically and mentally able to care for a pet, they make wonderful companions. Pets, something as simple as a parakeet, can provide many emotional and physical benefits. Sign up for visits by volunteers from senior centers, or Meals on Wheels, having a simple conversation with people will stimulate your brain and make you feel better. Call your Faith Community Nurse and ask her to visit! I have a hard time knowing who would like me to visit, please call the church office if you are stuck at home this winter and would like a visit. Don't be lonely, just call. ALSO-Don't forget to notify the office if you are hospitalized! Stay healthy this winter, don't forget to get your flu shot, and wash your hands often, and stay well! Submitted in HIS name, Jane Bugbee RN, BSN, Faith Community Nurse
