TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD WORSHIP SERVICE AND COMMUNION 11:00 AM FEBRUARY 11, Griffis Street, Cary, NC (919)
ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Trio Couperin Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit Praise the Lord, Be Joyful Haydn/Hopson *Call to Worship (* Please stand as you are able.) One: Gathering in this sacred place we anticipate new wonders each week. All: Wherever we gather to worship, a holy spirit is present. One: Open our eyes to witness the fantastic love and wondrous joy waiting to be revealed, even this day, even in this place. All: We will want to linger and camp in this sanctuary but when we leave today may our hearts be open to all the wonders of God s beautiful world. *Hymn Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise No. 12 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession All: Forgive us, God, when we linger too long by the waters, and on the mountain tops, enthralled with the glory that flows from you. When we fail to listen to your voice, leading and guiding us, shake us from our contentment and send us forward endowed with your power. Amen. Silent Confession 2
*Response Lord, Have Mercy No. 576 *Words of Assurance *Response of Praise Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow No. 609 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known. Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! *Sharing the Peace One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination New Testament Reading Mark 9: 2-9 NT, p. 44 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Old Testament Reading 2 Kings 2:1-13 OT, p. 332, 333 Sermon Changing Places Mitzi Lesher-Thomas 3
*Affirmation of Faith Jesus announced the coming of God s kingdom and its hidden presence in the midst of the world s kingdoms. He taught his disciples to seek God s kingdom first. We believe Christ gives us and demands of us lives in pilgrimage toward God s kingdom. Like Christ we may enjoy on our journey all that sustains life and makes it pleasant and beautiful. No more than Christ are we spared the darkness, ambiguity, and threat of life in the world. We are in the world, but not of the world. Our confidence and hope for ourselves and other people do not rest in the powers and achievements of this world, but in the coming and hidden presence of God s kingdom. Christ calls each of us to a life appropriate to that kingdom: to serve as he has served us; to take up our cross, risking the consequences of faithful discipleship; to walk by faith, not by sight, to hope for what we have not seen. *Hymn Source and Sovereign, Rock and Cloud No. 11 Time with Our Children Offering of Tithes and Gifts Offertory Anthem Arise and Bless the Lord! Drennan Chancel Choir Blessing and glory and honor be unto his marvelous name. Forever his power sustains us. Our anthem of joy we proclaim! Who is like our mighty God? What power can compare? He formed the heavens with his hands; see his glory everywhere! From the rising of the sun to the ending of our day, we will raise our song of gratitude. Let all creation say. Arise and bless the Lord, my soul, for the things that God has done. Our hearts are filled with thankfulness, holy Father, Spirit, Son! No other god is able to give and to provide. 4
We bless you, great and mighty God; our Lord, you are our rock, our guide. Blessing and glory and honor be unto his marvelous name. Forever his power sustains us. Our anthem of joy we proclaim! O bless the Lord! Come and bless the Lord! O rise and bless the Lord, my soul, for the things that God has done. Our hearts are filled with thankfulness, holy Father, Spirit, Son! No other god is able to give and to provide. We bless you, great and mighty God; our Lord, you are our rock, our guide. Arise! Arise and bless the Lord. Sacrament of Communion Invitation to the Table (Please write any Joys and Concerns in the Narthex Prayer Book) Hymn of Preparation Come to the Table of Grace (vv. 1,2,3) No. 507 Great Prayer of Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. One: Mighty God of Moses and Elijah, you come to us in a whirlwind of mystery, a swirling tempest, a devouring fire. Yet you come to us speaking faithfulness and mercy, shining light in our darkness, offering forgiveness for our sin. Therefore we praise you, joining the hymn of the six-winged seraphs, who cover their faces as they sing: 5
All: Holy, Holy, Holy One: We give you thanks for Jesus Christ, the light of the world shining at the dawn of creation, shining in our hearts this day with a splendor that overshadows all the beauty of heaven and earth. In his face we have seen your glory; through his words we have heard your truth; by his living and dying and rising we have come to know the height and breadth and depth of your great love. Remembering your faithfulness and mercy as we share this bread and cup, we offer ourselves in your service through Jesus Christ our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: 6
All: Christ Has Died; Christ is Risen One: Now let us share in your Holy Spirit poured out in this place for these people, upon this bread and cup. By your Spirit make us one people one in the promise of Moses, one in the prophecy of Elijah as we seek to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord. Let our lives shine with Christ s light a blessing of joy to the living, a beacon of hope to the dying the dawning of a new creation. All this we pray to you, O god, through the gift of your Spirit and in the grace of your Word, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. 7
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Words of Institution Keeping the Feast Communion will be received in the pews. Take and hold the bread; then as one body all will eat together. Take and hold a cup; then all will drink together, in one Spirit. *Prayer of Dedication *Hymn Arise, Your Light Is Come! No. 744 *Benediction *Response God Be with You Till We Meet Again No. 541 God be with you till we meet again; unseen wings protecting hide you, daily manna still provide you: God be with you till we meet again. *Postlude Toccata in F Major Buxtehude After worship, the Officer of the Day will be available at the Chancel steps to answer any questions for visitors and CPC members. Mitzi Lesher-Thomas Director of Music: Ed Yasick Choir: Chancel Choir Children in Worship: Medora Hix Trumpet: Justin Dickson Acolyte: Sam Boswell Lay Reader: Rhonda Hinnant Bus Driver: Jason Riffle Sound: Chip Carew Ushers: Lloyd Hinnant, Jim Kurz, Matt Donkin, Rick or Anna Boswell Counters: Ken Wease and Jane Dunbar The flowers in the Sanctuary are given by Barbara and Jim Turner to the glory of God and in memory of Barbara s mother, Myrtle Dow. wedding anniversary. After-Worship Coffee and Fellowship begins February 18 We need your help! Beginning February 18, we will have intentional time for coffee and fellowship, following the 11:00 a.m. service. It is our hope and goal to make this a regular Sunday feature. We need assistance to make this possible; however, thanks to the Congregational Fellowship Team (which has graciously committed to supplying coffee and snacks) helping out will be easy! If you can start a pot of coffee and plate a few finger foods, you can do this! (And, if you're worried that you can't, we'll have specific and easy instructions for you.) We think this will be a two-person job, so husband and wife teams serving as hosts for the week would be perfect. (But we're not married to helpers being spouses!) Please sign up at SignUpGenius ( and let us know if you would be willing to help once in awhile with this fun fellowship 9 opportunity.
Wanted: Hearts and Hands for Service as Ushers Ushers at CPC perform an important service on Sunday mornings: working as a team to help members and visitors feel at home, distributing bulletins, providing seating assistance, receiving the offering, straightening the sanctuary after worship, and generally making sure things run smoothly. Ushers serve once a month and training is provided. If ushering sounds like a good fit for your interests and energies or if you'd like more information, please contact Jane Dunbar at jvdunbar123@gmail.com. This offering helps people who have been through natural disasters with blankets, emergency food and shelter, and rebuilding their lives. Others learn sustainable farming practices to help feed their families and market the surplus. Clean, safe water and nutritional food are provided. Refugees around the world are assisted. The needs are great; please share God's warm love with those in need. Envelopes will be in the pews. Then, be sure to follow the Children s Time in worship each week. Additionally, nurture faith at home by engaging in weekly family devotions available during Lent, beginning with one for Ash Wednesday. These can be picked up in the Narthex on Sundays or accessed electronically (watch for details). Adults, plan to attend the Bible study from Know Chocolate for Lent. Each week we ll examine several scripture passages, view scenes from the firm, and share discussion and reflection. A special single-session screening of the film will be offered on Sunday evening, Feb. 18 at 6:00 p.m. as a service to participants. The Bible study will be held on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. throughout Lent, beginning Feb 21, repeated at 6:00 p.m. with a simple soup supper between sessions for the two classes to enjoy fellowship.
