8 TH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY WORSHIP SERVICE AND COMMUNION 8:30 AM AND 11:00 AM MARCH 3, Griffis Street, Cary, NC (919)
ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Aria in F Major Handel Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit Come Before His Presence Artman *Call to Worship (* Please stand as you are able.) One: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; All: to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, One: to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. All: For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. *Hymn Praise the Lord! God s Glories Show No. 33 Call to Confession Luke 6:37-42 (please be seated) Prayer of Confession One: Almighty God, we confess that we are incurable scorekeepers. We judge others with a standard we never use for ourselves. We see the speck in others eyes while ignoring the ugly log in our own. All: Forgive us. Forgive us for ever thinking we could be, even for one moment, the measure of righteousness or the standard of justice. As the cross of Christ casts its long shadow over our Lenten journey, call us again to lives of genuine penance and amendment of life. By your grace and through your transforming love, make us the people you have fashioned us to be, your sons and daughters, through Christ our Lord. 2
Silent Confession *Kyrie You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy No. 437 *Words of Assurance (facing one another) Lectern side: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Pulpit side: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. All in Unison: May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen! *Response of Praise Glory to God No. 583 Gloria, gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, gloria, alleluia, alleluia! Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings Old Testament Isaiah 55:6-9 OT, pp. 685, 686 Prophets Joel 2:12-14 OT, p. 847 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Epistle Acts 2:37-42 NT, p. 120 Homily The Intent of Lent Lori Pistor *Affirmation of Faith Lenten Creed from Patmos Abbey We believe that our lives are held within the encircling love of God, who knows our names and recognizes our deepest needs. We believe that Christ is the divine Child of the living God, and that his grace is like living waters that can never be exhausted. 3
We believe in the birthing, renewing, enabling Spirit of God who yearns over our welfare as a mother yearns for her child. We believe that God is in the arid desert as well as in green pastures, and that hard times and disciplines are also loving gifts. We believe that our journey has a purpose and a destination, and that our path leads to a human glory we cannot yet imagine. We believe that in the church we are fellow pilgrims on the road, and that we are called to love one another as God loves us. This is our faith and we are humbled to profess in Jesus the Christ. *Hymn God of Compassion No. 436 Time with Our Children Offering of Tithes and Gifts Offertory Anthem Spirit of God Bedford Chancel Choir Spirit of God, you moved over the waters, whispering God s love to the whole of creation. You breathe your life into God s sons and daughters, giving us talents and your inspiration. Spirit of God, by the prophets you sought us, calling us back. Through chosen leaders you reached us and taught us; by your own gift we were given a Savior. Spirit of God, like a dove you once rested, showing God s joy on the day Christ was baptized. You sent Christ out to the hills to be tested; through you, he called us to see God with new eyes. Spirit of God, like a mighty wind blowing: suddenly Christians stopped hiding and fearing. You gave them courage and love overflowing, so they proclaimed you to all in their hearing. Spirit of God, give us courage and daring to share God s love with a world that is waiting. 4
Sacrament of Communion Invitation to the Table (Please write any Joys and Concerns in the Narthex Prayer Book) Hymn of Preparation The Bread and the Wine Are Here No. 512 (Choir sings once; Choir and Congregation sing a second time.) Prayer of Great Thanksgiving One: O God, Creator of our wilderness world, O God, Savior of the lost, O God, Comforter of the sick and suffering, we give you thanks for your everlasting might; we glorify you for your covenant of mercy. For forty days you cleansed the earth with the waters of the flood. All: We praise you, O God. One: For forty days you illumined Moses with the words of your law. All: We praise you, O God. One: For forty years you fed your people with manna from heaven. All: We praise you, O God. One: You became truly human in Jesus our brother. For forty days, with fasting and prayer, he renounced the power of the devil. We extol his life. We lament his death. We celebrate his resurrection. Transform us, O God, with your lively Spirit. Make this food into manna for our journey, the body and blood of your Son. Words of Institution One: Grant us with the warring people of old, forty days of repentance. All: Save us, O God. One: Renew the whole earth with baptismal grace. All: Save us, O God. 5
One: At the last, lead all your pilgrim people through our deserts to your Easter garden. To you, O God, Creator, Savior, Comforter, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be our worship and praise, adoration and thanksgiving, now and forever and hear our voices in prayer: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Sharing the Feast Communion is served at the Chancel today. At either of two stations you are invited to take communion by intinction (dipping a piece of bread into the chalice/cup). If you wish to remain in the pew, the bread and cup will be brought to you. All bread is gluten free. *Litany after Communion from Isaiah 55 One: For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, All: and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, One: giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; All: it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. One: For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; All: the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 6
*Hymn Light Dawns on a Weary World No. 79 *Benediction *Sharing the Peace of Christ One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. *Postlude Concerto Walther After worship, the Officer of the Day will be available to answer any questions for visitors and CPC members.
