Matt Nieman ~The Response~ *Affirmation of Faith (Questions 68 and 70 from the PCUSA Study Catechism) What is a sacrament? A sacrament is a special act of Christian worship, instituted by Christ, which uses a visible sign to proclaim the promise of the gospel for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. The sacramental sign seals this promise to believers by grace and brings to them what is promised. In baptism, the sign is that of water; in the Lord s Supper, that of bread and wine. What is the main difference between baptism and the Lord s Supper? While I receive baptism only once, I receive the Lord s Supper again and again. Being unrepeatable, baptism indicates not only that Christ died for our sins once and for all, but that by grace we are also united with him once and for all through faith. Being repeatable, the Lord s Supper indicates that as we turn unfilled to him again and again, our Lord continually meets us in the power of the Holy Spirit to renew and deepen our faith.

We welcome violinist Stephanie Horton to worship today. Stephanie is originally from São Paulo Brazil. She began playing violin when she was 5. Stephanie is a senior at UT studying violin performance/premedicine. She plans to attend medical school beginning in the fall of 2018.

During the summer quarter, we'll explore God's call through stories from Judges, the prophets, and Acts. These stories show people being strong leaders, sharing God's love, and reaching through barriers. Reading the brief lesson before class is helpful, but optional, so please join us whenever you can. We are using a Great Courses series on The Old Testament presented by Amy-Jill Levine. The Old Testament was written in ancient Israel over 1,000 years by many authors. As scripture or as the most influential piece of literature ever written, this book is a source of constant wonder, inspiration, and intrigue. Library This class is on summer break until August 13. We are in need of a Sunday School teacher for the elementary class this fall. This is a once monthly commitment, and the lesson plan is provided. Back-to-School at Sunset Gap: Look for the tree in the narthex and select a tag to sponsor an item for a child. We are sponsoring 32 needy children in Cocke and Sevier Co. with items such as: backpacks, shirts, jeans, light jackets, socks, underwear, shoes, and school supplies. Sign-up on the list and return items to the church by July 30. (No gift wrapping, please.) Please contact Debbie Long with any questions, can help sort, or can help deliver.
