1 THE VISITOR Zion United Church of Christ *A Just Peace and Open & Affirming Church* 211 S. St. Peter St., South Bend, IN Phone: (574) Webpage: zionsb.org The Peg Board We Are Open & Affirming (Our ONA Statement) We recognize Christ's great mandate for inclusion, celebrate and give thanks for the diversity in which God created us, each in God's image and loved by God. In this spirit, our family of faith declares itself to be Open and Affirming and a Peace with Justice church, welcoming and affirming all people as children of God regardless of marital status, race, cultural heritage, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, or religious tradition. We welcome all people seeking a church home into the full life, membership, leadership, and employment of Zion Church. We celebrate family in all its diverse forms and honor, support, and bless all loving and committed relationships. We commit ourselves to work diligently to end all oppression and discrimination which afflicts God's people in our society. Within the past couple of weeks, a significant event took place that prompted a renewal of the covenantal nature of an ONA statement. Our Music Director, Kyle, was dismissed from the summer job at Bethel College that he was faithful to during his entire college career. He was dismissed because he refused to take down his relationship status on Facebook. Why? Because Bethel s policy does not allow openly gay people to be employed there. Bethel College is therefore open, but not affirming. Zion UCC is open AND affirming. Because I already led one congregation through the ONA process, my desire was to pastor a church that already completed the process. Zion is in the stage of the continual renewal of our ONA covenant with each other, and I am up for the task of helping us to live into the ideal of being unabashedly ONA. This is a process, my friends, and because we love and support Kyle, including everything he is as a child of God, we are challenged to take a deep breath, and head into our next stage of being extravagantly welcoming. The Elders Report Change can do you good. Even though the weather may not feel like it, Spring is here! One of my annual chores, and maybe yours too, is Spring cleaning. This year, because of the flooding, my cleaning started earlier than usual. The job consisted of 30 years of basement storage and living. The question I had to ask myself was not so easy. What was drying, cleaning and repacking stored treasures going to do for me? I already know that my children don t have interest in my memories and treasures. Was it time to let go of things? I needed to transform my thinking, to change my opinion on what was important to me, to change my beliefs. The basement is still a work in progress, at least until more time off and warmer weather come around. But I have changed my opinion on what is important to me. I have changed my beliefs. During my cleaning, I ran across a notebook that was started over 40 years ago. It was my first notebook of quotes and sayings that I had found to be inspirational, that caused me to think. I m sure some of them also helped me to change my beliefs. I ve included three of my many favorites. I hope you enjoy them! Peace, Sue Goldstein A touch is a touch, no matter how light it may be and the mark left by it is indelible. - Donald Nicholl If you don t find God in the very next person you meet, it is a waste of time looking for him further. Mahatma Ghandi It never hurts to help someone, it never helps to hurt someone. - Richard Sweet
