Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 Greetings, A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Los Angeles District You are the Best!! Los Angeles District is on the move for Our District Training Event was outstanding. The District Officers reported that this was one of the best training events. Attendance was great and the attendees feedback tells us they were very pleased with the presentations. Then there was Mid-Winter Event. It was great!! There were 43 of us that traveled to Bell UMC on the bus and there were many who drove themselves. We had the opportunity to fellowship with new people and visit this brand new very modern facility. The presentations and information regarding our mission projects was simply awesome. Please keep in mind we have access to the personnel from these facilities. They can help us tell the mission story in our local units. The sessions were very informative and motivating many thanks to the conference planning and Program committee. Los Angeles District had to give up the Reading Banner this year (only by a very small percentage, however), but this is only a challenge for us for next Year. Good job to all the Mission Today units. Our goal is 100% participation next year. We can do it! Just post the mission today unit requirements on the wall at your local unit meetings so every member can become involved. I am hearing wonderful things about the UMW Day s throughout the District. Keep up the great work Ladies. Your District team is so proud of you.. Thanks be to God for all you do. 2 Greetings Everyone, Welcome to 2012 and the first challenge of the year. I hope you will be able to breeze through this. The organized unit of Methodist Women a community of whose purpose is to know God and to freedom as whole persons Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, fellowship; and to concepts of mission participation in the ministries of the church. NOTES FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT On Saturday January 28 we had a wonderful Local Officers Leadership Training. Several Conference Officers were in attendance and were impressed with our training program. We give a big thank you to our Wilshire UMW unit for their wonderful hospitality, and to Wilshire UMC for making the facility available to us. We enjoyed a wonderful time. On February 18, the Los Angeles District was well represented as 47 members rode a chartered bus to the Mid-Winter Event. The year is moving quickly with many events to come. Many units have already had their Women s Day, and others are yet to come. Let s all celebrate our accomplishments. Reaching for Christ, Carolyn McGruder clmcgruder@yahoo.com SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN MISSION IS COMING UP!! 2012 Theme THAT ALL MAY HAVE LIFE Each year, United Methodist Women members prepare for faithful living and action by participating in mission studies. Mission studies are offered each year a geographical, topical, and spiritual growth study. These studies motivate, inform, and enrich our commitment to global ministry. Members take one of the three mission studies through the organization's Schools of Christian Mission program offered around the country. Below are the mission studies for A brief description of each can be found on page 9 on the School of Christian Mission Application: Spiritual Growth Study: Immigration and the Bible Geographic Study: Haiti Issue Study: Poverty In addition, this is a great time for fellowship, to meet sister UMW members from across the California Pacific Conference, to enjoy a mini-vacation, and most importantly, receive a spiritual renewal!! It s an experience you don t want to miss!!! (SEE PAGES 8 11 FOR SCHOLARSHIP & REGISTRATION APPLICATIONS) PAGE 2

3 Dear Sisters in Christ, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 The Washington D.C. Wax Museum adds Harriet Tubman to Collection Descendants of famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman unveiled a wax statue at the Presidents Gallery in the Wax Museum by Madame Tussauds in Washington, DC of the woman who led hundreds of slaves to freedom. On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Harriet Tubman's great, great, great, grand nephew, Charles E.T. Ross and Ms. Tubman's great, great, grand niece, Valery Ross Manokey, visited the wax museum with others as the statue joins a collection of presidents and other historical figures. Students from Harriet Tubman Elementary School also attended. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore. After escaping in 1849, she led great numbers of slaves out of the south to freedom through the Underground Railroad. She was a strong black woman who was dedicated and committed to freeing slaves from bondage. As we celebrate Women s History Month in the month of March, let us remember Harriet Tubman and all the women, known by name and those we may not have heard of, who work tirelessly for justice and freedom for all. Peace and Blessings, MERLE DAVIS MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SOCIAL ACTION THE NOMINATION S CORNER Greetings Sisters, Praise the Lord! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! We are moving into 2012 and we are in need of dedicated women who would like to see our Los Angeles district rise to an even higher standard. Each local unit has a nominating committee or at least someone working in that capacity. Ladies, I advise us to take inventory, stand up, encourage, and empower our young leaders of the future. Many of our members have been in office for decades and it is time for a change. Each church has been assigned a district rep from our executive committee. Find out who your rep is and ask for help mobilizing your local unit. We are here to assist you in any way we can. You may also want to know what the duties of the various officers are. If I may, I would also like to refer you to the United Methodist Women Handbook , pages for a brief summary. Complete responsibilities can be found in the constitution and by-laws section of the handbook, Special thanks to the women who attended our committee on nominations training. Thank you for your concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact anyone on the District Committee on Nominations for support. We are here to serve. Ladies, I challenge every local unit to be the best unit in Cal-Pac. You will be seeing one of our team members soon. Stand up and be what God wants you to be. To God be the Glory, PATRICIA KING Chair, Committee on Nominations TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE PAGE 3

4 L E N T Lent, a period of penitence and fasting. In this somber season of shadows, how do we keep the gospel front and center? We know that Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty-day season leading up to Easter. If you are counting, you notice that there are more than forty days, but Sundays are not counted as part of Lent. Sundays are resurrection celebrations held throughout the Lenten Season. Ashes, an emblem of Lent, are an image of our own mortality, spiritual condition, and hope. Lent invites us to willingly identify with Christ s suffering through fasting or other forms of self denial. Lent is a somber journey of spiritual preparation and renewal, marked by study and prayer. The spare and sober nature of Lent is healthy for the heart and true to the gospel; it helps us to remember that the good news of the risen Lord Jesus is not good without the way of the cross. It reminds us of the cross in our lives. In our purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons; please take time for daily prayer and Bible readings. Some Suggested Readings: The Psalms 19, 25:1-10; 51:1-12, and/or others of your random choice. Mother Teresa of Calcutta said: To show great love for God and our neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much love we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God. Prayer Lord, we thank you for our ability to serve, a precious gift from you. DR. GWENDOLYN WYATT MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH Hello Ladies, I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful and blessed New Year. If you missed the California Pacific Conference, Mid-Winter Event, you truly missed a blessing. The United Methodist Women Mid-Winter Event was held at Bell Memorial UMC, a brand new sanctuary built from the ground up. How awesome is that! Our keynote speakers were from David & Margaret Youth and Family Service, Toberman Neighborhood Center, Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry, and Neighborhood House of Calexico, all excellent speakers. I attended the David & Margaret Youth and Family Service presentation during our breakout session. Megan Anderson was our facilitator and gave us an excellent presentation on the programs and services that are offered to their youth. Here are some examples: residential services to females, ages 11to 18, outpatient treatment program, mental health, community based services, and a specialized non-public school. Congratulations to David and Margaret s board members, staff, and volunteers for making a difference in these young ladies lives. I would like to say THANKS to the Los Angeles District UMW presidents for assisting me with updating the Conference 2012 directory. A special thank you to Mary Hill, Los Angeles District, and Nave Johnson, Long Beach District, for ensuring our Los Angeles District 2012 Secretaries training was a success. God bless, Dora Waters SECRETARY PAGE 4

5 Greetings, EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION I would like to thank the local units Education and Interpretation coordinators that were able to attend the District Leadership Training for Local Units held on January 28, I hope everyone received some valuable information/material from this training. The District Mission Today Unit report for 2011 has been submitted to the Conference Education and Interpretation coordinator. It includes the category (Bronze/8-12, Silver/13-17, Gold/18+) and number of items completed by each local unit that submitted a Mission Today Unit Form for 2011 to our District Education and Interpretation Coordinator. I say Thank You to each Local Unit for submitting the MTU form Let us continue to stay focused on our Mission Work and remember, We can do all things through Christ which strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Peace, Patricia Whitman E AND I MISSION COORDINATOR Greetings Ladies, Congratulations to all who participated in the reading program. We made second place in the conference as announced at the Mid-Winter Event. We missed first place by 1% (nine people not turning in a report). I reported 102 participants with 800 members in the district, giving us 12.75% participation; but the winners had 13%. We did meet the goal to keep the banner in Los Angeles but we did something more remarkable. We were able to motivate another group to get in the competition. At the Mid-Winter Event, Pasadena District was commended for being in first place after not being mentioned for four years. Just imagine if it wasn't for the Los Angeles District they still would not be mentioned. Great job!!! Let's keep up the good work and stay in the competition. Let's get the banner back and also plan an activity to support an issue from one of the books read. Suggestions are welcome. Thank you to Doris Dyer (Wilshire) and Laura Farrand (Santa Monica) who attended the Local Officer Training classes in January. Some others received a booklet to take back to their churches. I still have a few left, and I am always a phone call away if there are any questions. I am also available to visit your unit with adequate notification. This year we should also encourage our children to read. The requirements are 5 books from the reading list and the adult involved will also get credit if the books are read aloud to the adult. The deadline to report for the district is always August 31 and therefore if you haven't started for this year please do so now. The 2012 book list is available and I will accept books from the 2008 list and after. If you, or your unit, do not have books call me and I can lend you the books so you will be able to participate. No excuses. : ) Effective immediately, the books on sale at the District Events will be subject to 9% sales tax. The books for School of Christian Mission will be available for purchase in May. Shalom, P AT THOMAS, Coordinator for Program Resources programresourcecoordinator@yahoo.com PAGE 5

6 Dear Los Angeles Units, We did a great job last year in our Mission Giving. We surpassed our Pledges with the total of $45, With the help of the other 4 Star Mission Giving and other designated giving we submitted an additional $12, with our pledge amount. Thank you so much for your generous gift to the Women s Division. This year we will continue meeting our goal in our Pledge of $45, It is still early, but some of the Units have already sent in their Pledges. Please try to send in your pledge once a month to the Los Angeles District. To date we have collected for 2012: Pledge: $4, Gift in Memory: $25.00 SMR: $ World Thank Offering: $79.15 Gift to Mission: $ Other Designated Giving: $ Thank you again for your great generous gift. MAY JUNG Your LAD Treasurer This article presents some thoughtful and inspiring messages to be shared and discussed with members of our units as well as others. Think about how much more our relationship increases with God when we worship him with our head, heart, hands, feet, and soul. It also grows when we praise and worship him with music, dance, as well as the spoken word. Do you know that he hears our cries for help which echoes off our walls? He also turns our tears into rivers of joy. He tugs us back into the safety of his grace. Every time we stumble over efforts to be perfect, he pulls us to our feet to learn new dance steps of hope. Sometimes we are so busy racing around that we do not notice the street signs for the Kingdom. Rather than lifting the fallen to their feet and brushing them off, we belittle them as we walk on pass. Let's offer them a cup of hope and joy. God has touched us with his grace, he has mended our hearts so that we might be loved and be more loving. God has filled the emptiness of our souls with the word of life. Let us continue to turn our faces towards the needs of the world, our communities, our families and ourselves. PRAY for each other. OUTREACH to others. NURTURE others. DR. THELMA L. EATON Mission Coordinator Membership Nurture and Outreach GOD LOVES YOU and SO DO I!!!! PAGE 6

You know the feeling of experiencing firsts! The first date, having your first child, the first to be chosen for a coveted position, the first to cry, the first to stand-up against injustice there are so many firsts! Most of us have attended a multitude of church conferences, church trainings and church sponsored activities. How many times have you come away with the deep sense of connectedness with the people gathered, the solidarity of spirit and the renewed sense of personal purpose and responsibility? Well, this is my story as it relates to the recent Mid-Winter Event of the California-Pacific Conference of United Methodist Women, held at Bell Memorial UMC. This Mid-Winter Event, Partnering with Others in Mission, was my first! The nuggets of gold were everywhere the ambience in the church was sacred, the UMW speakers were real people, making real sense and making no apologies for things out of their control. There was laughter, there was praise and worship, there was Holy Communion and there was social fellowship in breaking bread together. The facilitators for the breakout sessions bore an inward Passion for the work they are called to do. They brought their agencies issues of the day, their challenges, and their solutions to the forum; and, in the mix there was genuine Gratitude to UMW s prayerful financial support. This Mid-Winter Event spoke directly to the UMW s Purpose: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Amen!! P.S. It was a joy rolling with my Holman UMW! JOYCE BURRELL GARCIA Member of Holman UMW Unit PAGE 12

13 LAD UMW COLLABORATES WITH CHURCH WOMEN UNITED On January 6, 2012, members of the Los Angeles District UMW were present and supported the Human Rights Celebration organized by Church Women United for the Los Angeles area held at Phillips Temple CME Church. This celebration marks the 70-year old legacy of Church Women United (formerly United Council of Church Women), which took up the cause of universal human rights in 1941, and was instrumental in passing the charter of United Nations in 1945 with its preamble announcing That all should be treated alike without regard to race, sex, language or religion. Attendees recalled the moving speech of Eleanor Roosevelt in 1953 about where universal human rights begin: in small places, close to home so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person: the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world. Human Rights Celebration hosted by Church Women United on Jan. 6, 2012 In the photo are young women who presented a program on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Kelley Williams, a Master s degree graduate of the London School of Theatre & Fine Arts, Keesha Wilson, a college graduate of Pitzer College, and Lilit Arabyan, a college senior at UCLA and President of the Amnesty International chapter at UCLA. In the front row, second from the left, is Dr. Thelma Eaton (holding sign), the program organizer. Also participating in the ceremonies were Jennifer Lim and Mae Campbell-Jones from the LAD UMW LAD UNITED METHODIST WOMEN SUPPORTS ANTI-RACISM AND RACIAL AWARENESS INITIATIVE As part of the mandate of the Campaign for Children, LAD UMW voted to endorse and support the initiative known as Racial Justice & Harmony School Network headed by Rev. Janet McKeithen at the Church in Ocean Park in Santa Monica, CA, in response to a racially motivated incident which occurred in May 2011 at the Santa Monica High School. There are on-going efforts by concerned parents and racial justice advocates to monitor the school environment for racial/ethnic minorities at the Santa Monica-Malibu School District and advocate for programs and policies which deal with hate-motivated incidents, anti-bias and cross-cultural communication issues on school grounds. These efforts are part of the vision of ensuring a safe and quality educational environment for all children espoused by UMW s national Campaign for Children. Rebecca Hart, founder of Racial Harmony, a racial awareness program designed for students and school staff members, speaks to attendees at a workshop held in December 2011 As part of their public education outreach, the Racial Justice & Harmony School Network hosts monthly workshops with speakers on institutional racism, anti-discrimination and multicultural awareness on the second Sunday of every month. If you would like to know more about the Racial Justice & Harmony School Network, would like to voice your concerns for racial justice at schools, or lend your support, please contact the Church at Ocean Park, at And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8b Articles contributed by JENNIFER LIM Member of LAD Committee on Nominations PAGE 13
