Paul writing in I Timothy 6:17-19 from the Message Bible could have been written to American Christians. The word says, Tell those rich in this world s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life. Feeling rich and being rich are two different things. Regardless of the world s standard, you and I could be rich no matter how we feel! What would happen if every regular attendee of First UMC would be connected to a ministry and mission that would provide them with the opportunity to serve? Our dream and goal is everyone who attends our church will commit to at least one ministry and one mission during our summer sermon series Be Rich June 8-June 29! We are not talking about money! We are talking about treasures of your time and talents and your goods deeds that God will use to bless others! Be Rich, Pastor Dennis 1. Prayer that children and families that are hungry will reach out to this mission. 2. Help with lunch preparation every Wednesday morning beginning June 4. We start assembling lunches about 11:15 and leave for Country Manor around 11: Cookie donations (homemade or store bought). 4. Other donations needed through July 30: individual size chips, fruit or applesauce cups, fruit snacks, zip style sandwich bags, bottled water, or granola bars 5. We distribute lunches between 12:00 12:30. This mission requires about a 2 1/2-hour commitment each Wednesday. 1

2 Healthy Relationships Social isolation is a recognized risk factor for morbidity and mortality. But interacting negatively with family, friends and neighbors has its own drawbacks. A tenyear study of nearly 10,000 middle-aged, Danes found that those who had bitter or caustic relationships were more likely to die from cancer, heart disease, liver disease or accidents. The researchers estimate that frequent arguments or stressful demands from close contacts such as partners or children could increase the risk of death from any cause by at least 50%. Constant arguing had an especially negative effect, and men who were out of work seemed most vulnerable to this stress. The investigators speculate that conflict management skills could help people lead longer and healthier as well as happier lives. Try to listen to your words and the emotions attached to them. (As your grandmother would say- Think before you speak! ). Try to walk in the other person s shoes to help you understand their perspective. Ask a neutral person to facilitate a discussion. Always picture the other person as a child of God, made in His image. Stress Reliever Suggestions Quick stress reliever suggestions: Talk, walk or drive at a slower pace Let someone do you a favor Forgive and forget Take a nap Play music you like Watch a funny movie Appreciate nature Take a deep breath and count to 10 Give up control DAWG-Day Away With God time! from our Parish Nurse Cheryl Howard, RN Health Notes Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, Parish Nurse Conference I heard some interesting comments this year at the Parish Nurse (Faith Community Nurse) Conference: You are more than the sum of what you survive. How I pray will dictate my day! Find the places where this W just as in fact you are doing. I Thessalonian 5:11 e who are many are one in the body in Christ. God means for us to be connected to others in the work of the Gospel and in building strong relationships. We are commanded to reach out to others and witness to the world. How are we doing that? A sociologist, Nancy Tatom Ammerman, researched how churches partner with others (Pillars of Faith: American Congregations and their Partners). The average congregation (82%) supports about 5 organizations that provide services to their community: 74% of a congregation s members volunteer at an outside organization, 84% provide money and 57% provide space to another organization. 73% of congregations have at least one connection to an organization that works for the health, educational and cultural enrichment of people beyond their membership. Christ calls us to demonstrate compassion and mercy. We can do this best by developing caring relationships with others. Our calling may be to show others how beautiful life is when lived in Christ and to put that beauty to work in our everyday ministry. When we learn with others, we discover we are stronger together. Look around and notice the difference you make when you reach out to others not in your immediate circle- what have you learned from them? Thank you for responding to the call. day can be different and then make the choice to go there! You cannot give hope- you can only ignite it! When I is replaced by We then illness becomes wellness 2

3 Mother s Day visit to local nursing home Jason & Rachel Shore Missionaries at International House of Prayer (IHOP) Hello dear church! Peace and grace to you. We will be coming to Indiana for a couple weeks mid-summer and look forward to visiting with you. If you d like us to come share at your prayer group, bible study or meet individually to hear more about how we re serving in Kansas City - we d love to meet with you! Please me at rshore04@gmail.com or call to work out the details. One of May s highlights that we d like to share with you was a Mother s day visit to the local nursing home. Isaiah was quite the charmer as he boldly approached the grandmas one by one wishing them a Happy Mother s Day while placing a rose and handmade card in each of their worn hands. Big (sometimes toothless) smiles emerged from sweet women who have loved well. The staff also visibly softened when celebrated with flowers. We told them Jesus loves you and You are a Rose to the Lord. Some were hearing about God s love for them and having it demonstrated in a tangible way for the first time. As I watch the tender, green shoots spring from the small seeds we planted last week reach up through the dirt to the vast blue sky I am reminded of the verse Paul wrote the Corinthians, Tomorrow s Promise Preschool Graduation List So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. Oh how my heart swells with thankfulness and to be honest some relief too. Ha! I am grateful that as we with weakness plant small, seemingly lifeless seeds and then water them with our prayers that we get to stand back and watch our Father bring beautiful, new life forth. Thank you for your continued partnership as we plant the seeds of the Kingdom together. 4 Mission & Evangelism News Don & Vicki McGavran from our missionaries serving in Indonesia Celebrate June! The McGavrans are coming and we are looking forward to seeing you! Prior to our coming, we will have enjoyed two graduations as well as other joyous occasions. I find myself continuously saying, Who are we that we should be blessed like this? (Nobody!) We will also be traveling to Texas after 8+ years of not seeing Don s family, so it will be a fast paced summer for us. When I was checking in at Indy airport on May 7th to return to Indonesia, the lady made a statement that I ve heard numerous times. She said, I don t know how you do it; I could never do that. And I replied as I always do. I told her, God equips us to do whatever He calls us to do. You are not called to serve overseas, which is why you cannot imagine doing it; but if He did call you to serve overseas, you would be able to. Recently, I was asked to give input to an Did you know our church helps support the McGavran Family as they serve at a Christian Missionary School in Indonesia? Since 2000, they have served in Don McGavran in the traditional men s dress Gift cards for restaurants and fuel would be quite a blessing to use while we are traveling to and from TX in particular. Meet & Greet the McGavran s June 8 article a young friend was writing. She wanted someone older and wiser to help her. Older...That s me! Wiser...No way! But I agreed to chat with her and the direction of our conversation was interesting. Her thoughts were about being a bond servant to Christ. But as we talked about it, I kept talking about the benefits of what we do as we serve overseas, not sacrifices. I think we both were discovering as we chatted that being a servant of Christ is in fact not sacrifice. Chew on that! Maybe I ll pick up on it in a future newsletter... We are so excited about the missions committee hosting a meet and greet event on June 8th. We will be available to answer questions and hopefully help you see more of what we are doing at MICS. We ve included a list of some items that we would like to carry back to Indonesia with us. If you d like, pick an item to bring on June 8th or drop at the church office anytime up to mid-july. This would help with our India, Kenya, and now in Indonesia. On Sunday, June 8th, in conjunction with our Missions & Ministries Fair, we will be hosting a reception for their family. 5 Experiencing a Burning Bush Moment by Karen Yeager I ve always felt that being a Christian would be so much easier if there were just a burning bush. After all, the definition of faith is believing in something you cannot see. Even Moses needed it to hear God s voice. That burning bush would be hard concrete evidence. I know we all have had burning bush moments, but most of us miss them. We re busy, not paying attention, not in tune with God at that moment. However, I don t believe in coincidences. I always see them as God things, which brings me to why I m writing this. I would love to share this from the pulpit, but the emotions are still too strong to be able to talk without losing it. Many of you were praying non-stop in January for our son s recovery. Andy, suffering from the H1N1 virus, had a 5% chance of survival. Between your prayers and some risk-taking doctors, he survived and is healthy. However, when this was first unfolding, I had an honest-to-goodness burning bush moment. Andy had just been put on the ventilator; the roto-prone bed was next, and ECMO was right around the corner. ECMO, we knew, was a last ditch effort to save this life. There was nothing left after that. I was in his room by myself, praying outloud as only a mother can do, begging God not take him. After all, he had a wife and two little girls who needed him. When the nurse came in, we were standing at the foot of his bed when down from the ceiling floated a long piece of red confetti. There was absolutely no explanation for where this came from or what it was. The nurse looked up and said, C mon, God, we don t need you having a party right now. I looked at her and said, I ll take that as a sign that God is happy. As soon as those words came from my mouth, I felt some sort of concussion (for want of a better word) inside my body, and I knew Andy 6th Annual Ben Elo Memorial Soccer Camp was going to be just fine. God spoke to me. I ve always been a believer, but that moment made me a BELIEVER. As Rev. Dennis explained to me, in that moment my spirit and God s spirit were one. Of course, as time went on, and some small steps both forwards and backwards were made, there were still times when my faith wavered. One of my emotionally down times I was playing Words with Friends with Tammy Payton. She had played the word FADE. The F was open to play. When I looked down at my letters all lined up in a row were A. I. T. H. Once again, God sent me a message. Have faith, Karen. Am I a changed person? Yes, I am. I had my burning bush moment, and it has profoundly changed by relationship with Christ. He s now my personal buddy, my confidante, my friend. Blessings, Karen Yeager 6th Annual Ben Elo Memorial Soccer Camp is right around the corner. We need your help! 6 NEWS from UMW Strawberry & Craft Fair The United Methodist Women (UMW) have made final plans for the annual Strawberry Festival/Craft Fair to be held on Saturday, June 14t, from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. So make plans now to attend. Help Cut Strawberries We will be cutting strawberries on Friday, June 13, and once again we are asking for your help. Check your bulletin for further details. Also, if you are a crafter or home demonstrator or know of one who would like one of our booths on June 14, please contact Mary Craig. UMW Scholarships We are glad to announce that we have issued our second scholarship for Just a reminder that the scholarship is open to any woman who attends First UMC and is furthering their education. Thanks for Your Support We hope you enjoyed the Easter eggs in April and thank you for your support. What a great bunch of people we have at First UMC. News & Announcements A Note of Thanks from Jeff Lawson I and my family are so grateful to all of you for the outpouring of prayerful support during my recent heart surgery. Never in a million years would I have imagined that on April 8 I would find myself having to undergo such a procedure. I can tell you without hesitation or apology, that it was the hand of God that brought me to find out what was needed in order for me to get on the road to become well again. One person, whose name I still do not know, took it upon herself to alert me to a moderately suspicious condition while I was giving blood at the Church back on January 26 of this year. She did not have to do it, but she did. And because of her extra effort, I was able to eventually find out that one of my heart valves was approaching severe deterioration which may well have resulted in cardiac failure, possibly even this year. I don t toss around the M word (miracle) very often, but this is surely Stephen Ministry Perhaps one of the most common attitudes that prevents people from contacting someone about Stephen Ministry Care is a natural reserve or timidity about opening up to another person about deeply personal issues particularly if they don t know that person well. Most people have a tendency to see others as having it all together ; and no one particularly wants to admit that they don t, even to themselves. Everyone wants to project an image of being secure and confident; allowing another to see us in our vulnerability requires us to relinquish that image and admit our brokenness. as close to one as I have ever experienced. The love and support you showed through prayers, little notes of encouragement, cards, calls, texts, meals, visits, etc. was unbelievable. I have always been on the other side of the equation, offering prayerful help and support whenever possible. When the table is turned and you are the recipient of such an outpouring, you experience God in an entirely new way. Quite simply, it is an incredible blessing. And for that, we are extremely grateful. Most Respectfully, Jeff Lawson My Verse of Strength: Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. John 5:1-9 tells a story of the man at the pool of Bethesda who had been an invalid for 38 years. Jesus is willing to heal him, but before He does this, He first asks the man, Do you want to get well? Jesus respects the man s human dignity and asks permission to heal him. Similarly, no one will force a potential care receiver to accept the care of a Stephen Minister. The decision to accept care belongs only to the care receiver, and Stephen Ministers and Stephen Leaders will respect that person s decision. To find out more contact Dale DePoy or Cathy Mosier 6

9 What Is Christianity All About? by Pastor Ben Some people find themselves in a church on Sunday morning and often times, don t have a true understanding as to what it s really all about. Christianity for some may be misunderstood as simply an affiliation with a certain denomination. I ve heard someone asked the question, Are you a Christian? and the person s response is, No, I m Lutheran! or I m Methodist. There are those who might think that a Sunday morning worship experience is what Christianity is all about. Some believe it s about enjoying a formal liturgical service or experiencing a charismatic worship service with a band where a person can raise their hands. It could also be thought of as a set of doctrines and rules to live by. These are merely outward displays of Christianity, not Christianity. Elmer Towns in his book, Core Christianity: What is Christianity all about? states simply that Christianity is ultimately the influence of a person, and that person is Jesus Christ. How is Christ influencing you? Towns shared that in 2007 there where an estimated one hundred million believers in Jesus living in China. The interesting thing is that there was great persecution against Christians during this time. These believers would meet secretly in homes or other safe places to worship. Their worship services lacked the formality of traditional liturgical worship or a worship band to lead them. Towns says their Christianity is real and vital. Probably even more so than our own! Why? Because they have Jesus Christ! He is the core of Christianity! Christianity is a real relationship with Jesus that influences our lives in every way! It cuts deep to think that we (the Church) in America argue over which type of carpet or music we think is best when our brothers and sisters across the globe are gathering to worship in secret because their lives are dependent on it! Let s get beyond all our different preferences and come together to see Jesus influence our lives and to use our lives to influence others for his sake! Jesus is the core of Christianity!
