Notes on Gluten Free Dieting from our Parish Nurse Cheryl Howard, R.N. Health Notes You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11 There is lots of discussion about gluten free diets. Celiac Disease is a problem in which the body s immune system rebels with exposure to gluten. It affects 1 in 141 people in the USA. To effectively manage the disease, a person must avoid all foods that contain gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and any hybrids of these grains. They have a higher than normal level of certain antibodies, which can be detected by a blood test. However, if you feel gassy, foggy or develop a headache after eating a gluten filled meal, you could have a gluten sensitivity or intolerance. Just a warning...if gluten is removed from your foods, it may be replaced by unenriched grains and starches which are high in calories and sugar and few vitamins or minerals. Naturally gluten free grains are: Amaranth, Buckwheat, Flax, Millet, Quinoa, and Teff. A List of Healthy Foods Peaches contain substances that may fight off obesity related diabetes and cardiovascular disease. They also reduce LDL cholesterol. China is the biggest producer of peaches. They are rich in vitamin A and E. A daily serving of mushrooms boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation says a new study. Blood tests showed improvements in T-cell function and reductions in inflammatory proteins. Lower mortality was observed when people ate a half a handful of nuts each day. The study was conducted with peanuts and tree nuts. Healthy Pregnancies We have been blessed with the opportunity to pray for families expecting new babies. The prayer is for healthy pregnancies, healthy babies and healthy family bonds. One way to encourage a healthy pregnancy is to exercise. It is safe to exercise during pregnancy. The recommendation is for pregnant women to perform at least 30 minutes Mosquito Bites - YUCK! The mosquitoes are out in full force this season!! Lots of water makes for a great breeding area. Please be sure you have no pots or containers with water breeding them. If you do get bit, try witch hazel or Listerine of moderate activity most days of the week. Always discuss the routine with your OB/GYN. Activities such as walking, swimming, dancing, and elliptical are safe options. Modifications can be made for strength training and jogging. Exercises performed on the back should be avoided. The talk test should be done to be safe. mouthwash to relieve the itching. Another option to repel mosquitoes can be made by mixing 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and one cup of water in a spray bottle and then spray yourself. Peppermint tea has the ability to speed up the early stages of digestion and is helpful to people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Hawthorne tea has a nourishing effect on the cardiovascular system and used for heart health by reducing lipid absorption and oxidation a good way to lower your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Internationally Based Health A study in 2013 found that 95% of people were living with a health problem and the leading issues across 188 countries are: US-> back pain, Ireland->major depressive disorder, Saudi Arabia->Diabetes, Iraq-> Iron deficiency anemia, Burma->Hearing loss, Qatar-> Opioid dependence. 3

Taking Time to Pray 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. On the back of the weekly bulletin is a highlighted name. Here are several ways you can begin to pray for that person. You might begin with a Prayer of Preparation for yourself. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me the Joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Let my prayer rise like incense before you (from Daily Prayers of Intercession) Then pray for the individual highlighted on your bulletin by adding their name into a passage of Scripture. Here is an example using Ephesians 1:15-19: 15 For this reason, ever since I heard about s faith in the Lord Jesus and his/her love for all God s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for, remembering in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give him/her the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that he/she may know Jesus Christ better. 18 I pray that the eyes of s heart may be enlightened in order that he/she may know the hope to which Jesus has called them, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, 19 and His incomparably great power for us who believe. (from Prayer Scriptures for Prayer Warriors) This portion of Ephesians is my go to spot for graduating seniors! And a great way to pray for my children on a daily basis. My prayer is that each of you may grow in wisdom and revelation so that you may know Jesus Christ better! In Christ s service, Cathy Mosier Stephen Ministry Stephen Ministry s purpose is to bring Jesus healing love to people in need of care in our congregation and community. This caring ministry is the responsibility of all members. John 13:34 reminds us, Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All members are called to care for each other as they are able. Each member can help our Stephen Ministry team by identifying people who need Jesus love and care and connecting them with our pastors and Stephen Leaders. Stephen Ministry benefits all ministries within our congregation by inspiring members to discover their gifts and search for times and places to use them effectively. 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us, Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Many of us find it much easier to give care than receive care. Society generally encourages independence, praises the strong and looks down on the weak. BUT God did not create us to be independent beings as Genesis 2:18 points out, It is not good for the man to be alone. Rather, God created us to care for and be cared for by others. Jesus invites us to, Come to me, all you who are weary, and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 To find out more, come talk to either Dale DePoy, Cathy Mosier, Rev. Dennis or Rev. Ben. 4

Teeing Off for Missions a fund-raiser for the Nicaragua Mission Trip 2016 Do you own a business? Do you know someone who does? Even if you don t, the business you work for can benefit from this event! Be a part of something great while advertising to our community and church. This great opportunity comes in the form of a golf outing. We are looking for hole sponsors, donations of food, beverages, and desserts for our luncheon, and donations of any kind for door prizes. We understand that the company you work for might not be Missions Oriented, they may not even be a Christian organization, but what all businesses have in common is that they have to turn a profit. Approach your business with a flier and an attitude of confidence because you are offering them a chance to reach more customers, and ultimately make more money. All Life Groups Begins September 13 by Anne Gatts, Spiritual Development Director Beginning September 13, new Life Groups will begin meeting for eight weeks. Although each group will have its own unique study, they all will have three common purposes in mind: 1. To develop a relationship closer with God through Bible study 2. To encourage one another and build donations are tax deductible, so, not only are they getting a chance at more revenue, they are able to do so for free since we are a charitable organization. Approach your business with the mindset that what you have to offer them is valuable, not just spiritually, but monetarily as well and you re likely to leave with more donations than you expected. Also, start forming your teams now and join us on October 3 at Eagle Pines! Funds raised will go towards the Nicaragua mission we ll be taking next summer. We are going alongside Metanoia Missions based out of Managua to help them with their many, many mission fields that you can learn about at org. each other up through fellowship 3. To be God s hands and feet within our community through service. This is your opportunity to try something new! Groups will be meeting throughout the week on different days at various times. There are morning, afternoon and evening groups available. Call Anne Gatts at or contact the church office to get plugged in now. Get into a life group and see how God can use you to change your space on the planet! 5

How to Help a Grieving Friend: 11 Things to Do When You re Not Sure What to Do article has been modified to fit this space Megan Devine is the author of Everything is Not Okay: an audio program for grief. She is a licensed clinical counselor, writer and grief advocate. You can find her at Join her on facebook at While there is no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, here are some good ground rules. #1 Grief belongs to the griever. You have a supporting role, not the central role, in your friend s grief. This may seem like a strange thing to say. So many of the suggestions, advice and help given to the griever tells them they should be doing this differently, or feeling differently than they do. Grief is a very personal experience, and belongs entirely to the person experiencing it. This grief belongs to your friend: follow his or her lead. #2 Stay present and state the truth. It s tempting to make statements about the past or the future when your friend s present life holds so much pain. That your friend s life was good in the past is not a fair trade for the pain of now. Stay present with your friend, even when the present is full of pain. It s also tempting to make generalized statements about the situation in an attempt to soothe your friend. You cannot know that your friend s loved one finished their work here, or that they are in a better place. Stick with the truth: this hurts. I love you. I m here. #3 Do not try to fix the unfixable. Your friend s loss cannot be fixed or repaired or solved. The pain itself cannot be made better. Please see #2. Do not say anything that tries to fix the unfixable, and you will do just fine. #4 Be willing to witness searing, unbearable pain. To do #4 while also practicing #3 is very, very hard. #5 This is not about you. Being with someone in pain is not easy. You will have things come up -- stresses, questions, anger, fear, guilt. Your feelings will likely be hurt. You may feel ignored and unappreciated. Please don t take it personally, and please don t take it out on them. When in doubt, refer to #1. 11 Things to Do When You re Not Sure What to Do #6 Anticipate, don t ask. Do not say Call me if you need anything, because your friend will not call. Not because they do not need, but because identifying a need, figuring out who might fill that need, and then making a phone call to ask is light years beyond their energy levels, capacity or interest. Instead, make concrete offers: I will be there at 4 p.m. on Thursday to bring your recycling to the curb. Be reliable. #7 Do the recurring things. The actual, heavy, real work of grieving is not something you can do (see #1). Are there recurring tasks or chores that you might do? Things like walking the dog, refilling prescriptions, shoveling snow and bringing in the mail are all good choices. Support your friend in small, ordinary ways -- these things are tangible evidence of love. Please try not to do anything that is irreversible -- like doing laundry or cleaning up the house -- unless you check with your friend first. That empty soda bottle beside the couch may look like trash, but may have been left there by their husband just the other day. The dirty laundry may be the last thing that smells like her. Ask first. #8 Tackle projects together. Depending on the circumstance, there may be difficult tasks that need tending -- things like casket shopping, mortuary visits, the packing and sorting of rooms or houses. Offer your assistance and follow through with your offers. Remember #4: bear witness and be there. #9 Run interference. To the new griever, the influx of people who want to show their support can be seriously overwhelming. There might be ways you can shield and shelter your friend by setting yourself up as the designated point person -- the one who relays information to the outside world, or organizes well-wishers. #10 Educate and advocate. You may find that other friends, family members and casual acquaintances ask for information about your friend. You can, in this capacity, be a great educator, albeit subtly. You can normalize grief with responses like, She has better moments and worse moments and will for quite some time. An intense loss changes every detail of your life. #11 Love. Above all, show your love. Show up. Say something. Do something. Be willing to stand beside the gaping hole that has opened in your friend s life, without flinching or turning away. Be willing to not have any answers. Listen. Be there. Be present. Be a friend. Be love. Love is the thing that lasts. 6

Thanks from the Maddens Revelation Bible Study from Gary & Angie Madden To our church family, Thank you for all of the kind words, cards and prayers for Aunt Marilyn throughout the years and at her passing. We take comfort in knowing that we serve a loving God and she is well cared for in His arms. We also know that we will all be reunited one day. Bible Study Fellowship Begins Did you know that the book of Revelation is the only book of the Bible that promises a blessing to those who study it? It is often one of the most neglected books of the Bible even though it reveals a picture of Jesus like no other can. Join Anne Gatts for a 12-week in-depth study delving into the treasure trove of the Revelation of Jesus Christ as recorded by the apostle John. The adventure begins on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:30. Bring your Bibles and be ready for a blessing! Bible Study Fellowship is an interdenominational Bible Study group for women. This will begin again at our church on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:45 p.m. This year they will be studying the book of Revelation. Carnival Worker s Dinner Thank You Can you believe this ministry is in its 14th year? The workers appreciate and look forward to this dinner every year one of the workers commented that he has been coming to the dinner for 11 years! They feel very at home in our church. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with this important ministry. Those who donated food gave the workers an amazing feast to enjoy. Volunteers worked tirelessly in the kitchen preparing the food and cleaning up afterwards. This year, the workers were given a Cross bracelet, pocket daily devotional flip book, and hygiene packets. Sue Klinger provided blood pressure checks, another important service that they appreciate. Thank you for making it possible to provide this ministry every year! If you ve never volunteered at the Carnival Worker s Dinner, join us next year; it will touch your heart. Kim Webster and Lydia Rychtarczyk Summer Camp Update Another season of camping for Impact 2818 Ministries has come to an end, and what a year it was!! Campers had amazing experiences in challenging themselves on the high and low ropes course. They made new friends and saw old ones. Several campers made a new commitment to Christ, and some are going into ministry. The camping season is over, but already there is work being done for next year. Director teams are working on creative themes and recruitment for camp, Impact Staff and volunteers are making campground improvements, and campers are eagerly awaiting news when their camp registration can be sent in. There are many ways you can make a difference for children of all ages through the camping ministry of Impact Give financially to the scholarship fund or a special project fund. Give of your time helping run camp or helping get the grounds ready for another great season. Pray for the staff, volunteers, and campers. 7

Please call Kim Webster at , Shelley Duncan at or Lydia Rychtarczyk at Soon the days of summer will be coming to a close, so now may be the time to start your fall cleaning. Trunk-or-Treat Family Ministries is hosting a Trunk or Treat during the Halloween hot dog roast. What is a Trunk or Treat event? Children go from trunk to trunk collecting candy or trinkets from volunteers who have decorated their vehicles to serve as a backdrop for this spooktacular event! Candy and trinkets will be provided by Family Ministries. This year the trunk or treat will be held around the bell tower. We encourage trunk or treat participants to dress up. Please keep in mind that this event is for children, so we ask that all costumes be kid friendly and just friendly in general. We don t want to scare the little ones. There is a PRIZE for the best-dressed car and participant. Registration forms will be sent out in the October Sonburst. If you can t participate, you can donate individually wrapped candy. Contact Kim Webster at or Lydia Rychtarczyk at with questions. 8
