Brother Mickey McGrath, Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, is an artist, writer, and speaker who loves to explore the relationship between art and faith. His work and ministry have been featured in St. Anthony Messenger, USA TODAY, and many Catholic newspaper articles around the country. He creates art for many of today s leading Catholic publishers including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, for whom he has designed posters for Catechetical Sunday, Home Missions Appeal, and National Migration Week. 3 BOOK OF THE MONTH OUR COMMON HOME by Michael O Neill McGrath While reading Pope Francis encyclical Laudato Si, artist and author Brother Michael O Neill McGrath was literally inspired to grab stylus in hand and embark on a creative drawing journey that lead him to illustrate some of the pope s most inspirational writings. Most of the art in the book is digital, while some images were taken from Mickey s ever-present sketchbook, all of them highlighted by the impassioned, uplifting, and challenging quotations from Pope Francis. These vivid illustrations help the reader discover and remember the pope s instructional words of wisdom as he speaks of the God-given gifts that surround us, and how we have been mandated to care for creation with all of its beauty and inspiration. WALKING IN HOPE SUPPORT GROUP Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 7:30 PM Welcome Center This group is non-denominational The epidemic of drug use has hit this area hard. There have been many deaths from drug use and for parents, siblings and friends the loss is devastating. We have a support group for those who have lost someone to this horrible disease. Join the Program What does the Mass have to do with the Bible? Starting date: October 16, 2017 at 7:15PM in the Welcome Center. The program will explore what the Bible teaches us about the Mass. Topics covered are: what the ultimate meaning of the Eucharistic sacrifice is, how what happens at the Mass relates to God s covenant dealing with Israel, and how we are to offer ourselves to God through the Liturgy of the Eucharist. 4 LA SALETTE ANNUAL APPEAL La Salette has been in the news a lot about our on going tax situation. As many of you know this situation has yet to be resolved and this continues to put extra financial pressure on the Shrine. The Shrine has always depended on the generosity of those who use the Shrine. Here, during September, the month of Our Lady s Apparition, we once again appeal for you to remember us. In the pews you will find our Annual Appeal letters. Please take one and prayerfully determine what you might be able to give us. No gift is too small, but we hope you would consider a $25, $50, $100 or even a $1000 gift. Also, please check to see if your place of employment may participate in matching gifts as some retirement packages include the benefit of matching gifts. A JOURNEY TO PEACE: Moving through Loss & Grief October 18th, 2017 from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM in the Retreat Center Cost: $55 (includes lunch) Facilitated by Peggy Patenaude Loss is a universal experience that comes in many forms. We are all familiar with death as the ultimate loss where grief is quite apparent. However, crises brought on by unemployment, illness, aging parents, children leaving home and divorce can also create a sense of loss. Though at times sadness and sorrow may feel overwhelming, we are not powerless. When we allow ourselves to journey through the grieving process, healing can be experienced, hope can be restored and peace can be found. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY October 3rd led by Dottie Levesque The prayer shawl ministry is an integral component of ministry in the universal Church. It is an outreach to individuals at significant times of their lives and it becomes a spiritual hug from God when it is worn. Because the ministry is deeply rooted in prayer, the shawl creators lovingly encircle the lives of the shawl wearers. You are welcome to join us each month! GRIEF EDUCATION & BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT The loss of a loved one in death is the greatest loss one faces, and the most piercing pain one will ever experience. Grief Education is a safe, compassionate, and confidential forum where you will be given the opportunity to learn, share, explore feelings, and find ways to accept and to cope. The next meeting will be on October 23th. Cost: $10 per session Pre-registration required. 6 CALLING ALL MUSICIANS Music is an essential part of worship. After Vatican II the style of music at Mass began to change. At first what became known as the folk mass led by a folk group became common. The style has grown from a folk group to larger ensembles with a full choir and use of several musical instruments. With the addition of Mr. Stephen Higgins as our music director, we are now looking to expand our music offering to this fuller musical style. We are looking for all voices (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass), Violins and Cellos, wind instruments and guitars, bass, and other such intruments. LITURGICAL MINISTERS WANTED If God is calling to be an active volunteer in the shrine community, we are looking for volunteers to be lectors, hospitality ministers, eucharistic ministers, sacristans, and altar servers.
