2 All Souls Catholic Church 2 Pentecost Sunday "And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always." Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and nothing was ever the same again. This event is often referred to as the "birthday" of the church. It took Pentecost--and the power of the Spirit--to embolden the apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Conversions began to happen and the early church began to grow. And all of this took place without Jesus' earthly presence among them. This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us! We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying sincerely, "Come, Holy Spirit!" The special hymn of today's feast, called the sequence, does just this. It also expresses well the package of "benefits" that come from the presence of the Advocate among us: "You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe." And not only do we receive these personal blessings, but the Church herself also receives a tremendous gift. As Jesus said, "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." It is only through this divine guidance from on high that the Church has the power and privilege to teach and guide us who are still here below. LPI, Inc. Live the Liturgy this week: We have been given the Holy Spirit to guide us to truth. It is this same Holy Spirit that gives us the courage and the wisdom we need to live a Gospel-centered life. This Gospel has something to say to people of different backgrounds and nationalities and has a message of timeless and limitless relevance. As Christians who have been given the Holy Spirit, we are called to live this new and different life. LPI, Inc. May 15, 2016 All Souls Parish Office Staff Phone: Fax: Secretary to Fr. 3 Pentecost Sunday 3 Make All Souls Your Parish Home Today! Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. These may be found in the narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website:. Why not sign up today? We Love New Members! A reminder to all of us, and to the newly confirmed that we too must go forth and continue the work of Christ. We must give witness to Him by the way we live our lives. It is one that requires sacrifice, courage and perseverance. Be assured that we are not left alone to accomplish this work. He has promised that the Holy Spirit will strengthen us.
