2 Clergy Thoughts Missionary. The word brings thoughts of a pious person going to a far away country to convert the heathen to Christianity. According to my dictionary, this is relatively accurate; however, I would suggest it is a narrow definition, and does not encompass much of the mission work which occurs. The resurrected Christ told the eleven apostles that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem (Luke 24:46 ESV). The apostles were to begin at home, in Jerusalem, proclaiming repentance and forgiveness of sins. The forgiveness of sins and hope of eternal life is based on the work of Jesus in his precious death, resurrection, and ascension. Therefore the apostles were to make known the passion of Jesus, starting at home in Jerusalem, and working out to all nations, both near and far. Today we are God s disciples, his sent ones. We are the ones who are to proclaim the Gospel message to all, to those close to home, and to those farther away. We are to proclaim the death, resurrection, and ascension to all nations of the world. The operative word here is we, you and I. We are to ensure that Jesus message of salvation is spread to all peoples of the earth, both at home and to the far-flung reaches of the world. The easiest way to accomplish mission work is to assist others to do it, to donate funds for them to go, to pray for them, to pray for their protection while away. This is well and good, but mission work is much more than writing a cheque. The attitude that missions is something someone else does brings with it the same problems as the definition of missionary at the top of this writing. It is assuming that it is someone else who is going and often assumes large distances are involved. I was surprised at seminary to learn that Canada receives many missionaries from other countries. We, here in Canada, are viewed by other Christian counties as a place which needs converting. Many Canadians are non-christian. Many of the Christians here are what may be called nominal Christians, Christian in name only but not practicing their faith; not living consistently with what they say they believe. Therefore other countries send missionaries here to convert us to the Truth, to deepen the faith of those of us who are already Christian. There is work to be done here at home. While at seminary, I mingled with many students who felt called to go to other countries and were taking courses specifically to enter into the far-flung mission field. As a result, I know people who are either in other countries or who are home from being away. I applaud their efforts. I, on the other hand, felt my calling was to local parish ministry. At the same time, I am aware God may change His call on my life. He may decide He needs me elsewhere and I need to be open to such a calling should God make this known to me. I did feel called to go to Fort McMurray for a brief time last year. This was actually a local mission trip; going to do God s work among other people; going to proclaim God s love and grace to them in word and action. There is a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) base in Turner Valley where young people train to go to the far reaches of the world spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. They are preparing for the traditional view of missions. One of the workers there is Sanal Thomas who has come with his family from India. Sanal has become known to a number of Meota parishioners as their family worships at Christ Church and Sanal led our Lenten series at St. George s this spring. Sanal feels called to a mission trip back to his home country of India. One evening, he let a few people know he would be willing to take a small group of men with him. Rev. Alan has felt the call to go as has Liam. This is mission work being done by our own local Christian family, by our own congregation, by people we know and love. It is much easier to send others to go on missions than it is to go ourselves. It is easier to send those whom we do not know well than to see our friends and family go on these trips. It is easier to give money to other organizations, abdicating the responsibility for missions to them. Certainly they need our support, but we also need to recognize the responsibility of our local congregations to the mission field. Knowing some of our own have felt God s call on their lives, it behooves us to support them as we are able: financially, praying for their safety, praying they will have the words and actions needed to be successful with those they meet, praying that God s work in the world may be furthered through them. Sanal, Rev. Alan Getty and his son Liam will appreciate our prayers of support for their safety and for the success of their mission so that hearts and minds will be opened to what they have to say. They will also appreciate prayers for health as they encounter a changing diet, for wisdom in knowing what is culturally appropriate in this new setting for some of them, for places and times of rest. Let us take time to pray for those of our own parish family who have felt the call to go and been obedient to that call. Furthermore, let us pray for the health and safety of their immediate families whom they have left behind. Rev. Gordon Pontifex 2
