How Jesus describes himself as a Good Shepherd responds to the criticism leveled against the incompetent shepherds, by Ezekiel the prophet. Key to Jesus teaching is the shepherds willingness to lay down his life for his sheep. This refers to the death of Jesus. Because he is willing to die for his sheep, he is the model and true shepherd. Being a good shepherd is rooted in the relationship the shepherd has with his sheep. It cannot be fulfilled by a hired hand no matter what his skills might be. He does not know the sheep as a good shepherd does, and he is not willing to put his life in danger for a bunch of sheep that are not even his own. When danger comes, the hired hand thinks of himself first and lets the sheep fend for themselves. At the heart of Jesus being a Good Shepherd is a relationship to his sheep. Jesus knows his sheep and they know him. Knowledge does not mean intellectual context. It is about the intimate relationship that Jesus has with his sheep. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. This is what Jesus will do for those who believe him. Jesus indicates that there are other sheep who are not part of the flock. He also has responsibility for them. This is a reference to the gentiles. Jesus declares that these other sheep share the same kind of relationship with him as do others. Ultimate goal is to have one flock under one shepherd. No one can force divine power he has received from God. Along with the theme of Good Shepherd Sunday, it is also Vocations Sunday. Today we pray that the church may be blessed with young people needed to be leaders in spreading the Gospel message as priests and sisters. Is God calling me to greater service in my church and community? What am I doing to encourage more young men and women to consider a vocation to the priesthood and religious life? 3 April 22, Fourth Sunday of Easter 3 Cluster News Recent Baptism Congratulations to Graham John Soppe son of Garrett and Shari who was baptized at St. Mary on Saturday, April 14. CDA Lifesaver Campaign Local Court 1976 of Catholic Daughters is sponsoring their "Life Saver Campaign" the weekend of April at Fareway and weekend end Masses in the cluster. Life Saver is speaking for those affected by domestic violence. 60% of monies is given to people in local shelters in our area and 40% to other parts of Iowa who do not have a CDA court to help fund that area. Thank You and please be generous. CDA Mother Daughter Granddaughter Guest Night The Catholic Daughter Mother/Daughter Date Night is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30PM in Immaculate Conception O Sullivan Hall, Masonville. Come and enjoy an evening of food and fellowship. A very informative presentation will be given by Ashley Stakis, newly appointed Executive Director of the Dubuque County Right to Life. Cost for the evening will be $5 per person. Bring your daughter, granddaughter or a friend! You do not have to be a Catholic Daughter to attend. All are welcome - please join us! Totus Tuus Totally Yours Blessed Trinity Cluster St. Mary Campus June nd, 2018 What is Totus Tuus Totally Yours Totus Tuus is a weeklong program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the catholic Faith to children and youth through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness, and Eucharistic worship. It s like a Vacation Bible School on Steroids! Who Can Attend? The Totus Tuus Grade 1-6 program is designed for children going into 1st through 6th grades in the school year. The Grades 1-6 program runs Monday through Friday (June 18-22) from 9:00AM - 2:30PM daily. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch. Snack and beverages will be provided throughout the day. Totus Tuus offers formation in the evening for those entering the 7th & 8th grades and those entering grades 9-12 for the school year from 7:00-9:15PM Sunday through Thursday (June 17-21). The junior high students will join the senior high students for the evening program; however their classes will remain separate to maintain an atmosphere and discussion level that is appropriate for both age groups. All that is needed is a comfortable bed to lay their heads, a shower and a quick and simple breakfast of cereal, granola bars or the like. Missionaries will be busy from 8:30AM -9:30PM daily. For the latest schedule go to: ewtn.com/tv April 22, Fourth Sunday of Easter 6 What You Should Know About the NEW TAX LAW & CHARITABLE GIVING Now that the 2017 tax season has passed, our attention turns towards the recently passed Tax Reform Law and its potential impact on charitable giving in Below you will find some information and, hopefully, some helpful guidance as responsible stewards of God s many gifts. So, what will change? The standard deduction (allowed on federal tax forms) will nearly double to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples. This change (coupled with other restrictions) will reduce the number of individuals and families who itemize their federal taxes. Fewer people itemizing their federal taxes will mean that fewer people will be receiving a federal tax deduction for cash gifts given to charity. But, what won t change? Many different avenues of giving still remain very lucrative! Gifts, such as, those receiving a tax credit (for example, the STO), appreciated stock gifts, gifts of property, grain gifts, and IRA charitable rollover gifts will all continue to offer excellent ways to save tax. The tax benefits of charitable giving will remain the same on your state taxes in Iowa, since those still have not changed. The charitable deduction for those who will continue to itemize is still very much available and, in fact, has been enhanced, allowing individuals to deduct up to 60% (up from 50%) of their adjusted gross income to charity. And, most importantly Our reason for giving hasn t changed! Rather than giving in order to save on tax, we give to a cause, to a mission, in the name of Christian charity. The message of Christ was, is, and will forever be the expectation that we help those in need by among other things being good stewards of the many gifts with which we have been entrusted. Supporting the mission of Christ through the sharing of our gifts at the local, diocesan, and universal levels is still very much a part of our identity as Catholics. Other things to consider: Certain individuals and families might end up saving some tax under the new law. Perhaps those who do will think to donate a portion of those savings through charitable giving. Even this year, a certain number of us will be receiving a tax return. A generous option might be to share a portion of that return through a gift to a charity that supports the poor and disadvantaged or perhaps to our parish community. For more information and to register, visit their website at Summer Camps for Girls The Dubuque Franciscan Sisters are offering two summer camps for girls in June 2018 at Mount St. Francis, 3390 Windsor Ave., Dubuque. Best Franciscan Friends (BFF) Camp is a day camp for girls who will finish 4th or 5th grade at the end of the school year. BFF Camp will be held from 9:00AM to 5:30PM on Wednesday, June 6, through Friday, June 8.
