Marcel Kielkucki Music Coordinator Janella Neverman Father Joe s Prose April 29, Fifth Sunday of Easter 2 Just as last week with the image of the Good Shepherd, on this Fifth Sunday of Easter, Jesus uses rich agricultural imagery to describe the relationship between God, Jesus and the followers of Jesus. In the metaphorical description, the Father is the gardener or vine grower, Jesus is the vine and Jesus followers are the branches. The Father is the gardener of the vineyard: responsible for pruning vines so that they can produce fruit. Dead branches need to be cut away to make room for new growth. The pruned branches are stacked together and burned. The process of removing dead branches without those that are healthy is difficult but necessary. In the Gospel it is Jesus word that does the pruning Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. The word remain is very important. It speaks of a deep level of intimacy that exists between the Father, Jesus and the disciples. It is the dynamic of divine mutuality. A disciple s decision to remain in Christ marks the difference between those who bear fruit and those who are pruned away. Remaining in Christ is an active concept. It is not enough to draw life and energy from one s faith, a disciple must also bear fruit. Those of us who draw life from the Spirit of the risen Christ must use that power to give new life to others. How strong is your connection to the vine? How much energy do you draw from God? Nurse Nancy - dbq123n@dbqarch.org Nancy Appleton, Cluster Parish Nurse Gratitude is the key component of helping people live happier and longer. 1. Gratitude reduces our stress. Thankfulness redirects our attention from our difficulties to the benefits we enjoy. It helps us reframe our losses and stay connected emotionally to friends and family. 2. Gratitude inoculates us from negative emotions. When we concentrate on the positive we are able to keep negative thoughts at bay, so there is less focus on what we don t have or how our decisions could have turned out better. Negativity leaves room for resentment, envy, and regret to build. 3. Gratitude sustains our relationships. Gratitude draws people together, builds trust, and strengthens ties. 4. Gratitude improves our health. Grateful people visit their doctors less often and live longer than others. Research shows that thankfulness helps us sleep better, control blood pressure, and generally reduce physical complaints. Cultivating gratitude makes each day worth living and might even give us more days!! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 MARRIAGE MOMENTS ~ "Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth." (1John 3:18) Saying "I love you." is good. Doing an act of kindness is an even stronger testament of love. Use both "love languages" once today. by Susan Vogt,

These are people that give of their time and their talent to help in any way they can to better their programs. Many are "behind the scenes" persons that do things that most of us don't even realize need to be done. The SCRIP program is no exception. We have a wonderful group of people, many of whom have been with the program since it started over 20 years ago. It's not just the people who sell from the boxes in the back of church on the weekends; it s our Friday sellers, our summer sellers, those who sell during Christmas or spring concerts. The people that count EVERY SCRIP card in the box on Mondays for inventory and those people that walk/drive to businesses (both local and out of town) to pick up SCRIP inventory. We have people that make bank deposits and come in on Sundays and/or after hours, on their own time, and enter information into the computers so that we keep a close eye on inventory. Some of those same people keep track of your tuition credit and send you a postcard in August with that amount. We say 'THANK YOU' to all of these people for their dedication and commitment to the SCRIP program...we are nothing without YOU! We would love for more people to be involved with SCRIP...it could be a little or a lot. As stated before, many of our volunteers have been with us since the beginning and it's always nice to have extra people as back-ups if necessary. Counting SCRIP cards, picking them up, dropping off checks to local businesses...very easy and not time consuming at all. Selling SCRIP or helping with data entry...a little more time involved. YOU decide what you can handle, YOU decide what amount of time you can give. We welcome anyone who believes in our program or someone who wants a better understanding of SCRIP. We now have a new address specifically for SCRIP...SCRIP@st-marys.pvt.k12.ia.us. Let us know when you'd like to get started!
