2 Thoughts from Fr. Paul Share Jesus Love Once again, I want to continue with the four Archdiocesan Pastoral Priorities that have been given to us by Archbishop Jackels. The fourth of these is: Promoting Vocations, and Priesthood in Particular This is what Archbishop Jackels offered us on this topic: Seminarians are like garlic in cooking and incense at Mass: more is better! There are things we can do outside the box, but inside the circle, to improve our vocation situation. Each of us can be an agent of this positive change. In this regard, I think the do-able tactics for how to get more priests in the Archdiocese of Dubuque can be summarized by the acronym PITA: pray, invite, talk it up, and appreciate. We pray because we recognize our need for priests to practice fully our faith, that we are in need of more, and that we turn to God in our needs. We invite young men to consider a vocation to the priesthood, asking those with a vigorous physical, mental, and spiritual health, which is needed to live and serve as a priest here, today. We talk up the message of vocation in general, one's state in life, and priesthood in particular, encouraging young people to bring this to prayer every day: say the Glory Be as a reminder that we do not live for the glory of me, but of God; the Our Father to know God's will; and the Hail Mary, for the courage to say yes to God's will. And we appreciate the person and ministry of the priest, communicating that priesthood is a good thing, an important thing, a needed thing all things that a young man may need to see as part of his discernment. The Gospel of Mark records Jesus using the image of a farmer who sows seeds to illustrate the growth of the Kingdom of God. The farmer sows the seed, and then it sprouts and grows, he knows not how (Mark 4:26-29). In the context of vocations, we do what we can now to sow the seed of a priestly vocation. Whether it bears fruit, or when, or how, well, that's the work of the Holy Spirit. We are convinced however that the harvest is not an if, but a when. Even if we aren t around to witness the fruits of our labor, we labor nevertheless. What can we do? PRAY, INVITE, TALK IT UP, AND APPRECIATE! How do you Share Jesus Love? The Sacred Heart Church choir is gearing up for another year of enhancing our weekend Masses. We are looking for men, women and children that love to sing and want to make our Masses more meaningful. The Sacred Heart Church Choir is open to ages 11 through adult. We provide music for various weekend services as well as special celebrations. We rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7 8 in the church choir loft. We will follow the Religious Education schedule. Our first rehearsal will be September 9th. Students that need volunteer hours for Boy Scouts, Camp Fire, Confirmation and even for Silver Service Hours for their silver chord at the High School can earn many hours. Volunteering for your church also looks good on scholarship applications, job and college resumes.
