3 A letter from Deacon Tom Sommero As a teenager in the 1970s, I worked at an A&P store in Queens. I remember what a big deal it was when the store decided to stay open late on Thursday and Friday nights... till 9:00 PM! Can you imagine? Twenty years later, I couldn t believe it when our Middlesex Pathmark changed their closing hours to... never! They were open twenty-four hours a day. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids five who were wise and five who were foolish. All ten went out with their oil lamps to await the arrival of the bridegroom (think, Jesus and His Final Coming) for the wedding feast (think, everlasting life in Heaven). The wise maids brought plenty of oil; the foolish did not. Of course, when the groom finally arrives at midnight, the wise bridesmaids are able to welcome him with their lamps burning brightly. But the light of the foolish bridesmaids had gone out. So what did the foolish bridesmaids do? In the parable, we re told that they went off to buy more lamp oil. What!?! At midnight? Where did they go? Even 7-Eleven did not become an around-the-clock operation until Okay. Maybe I m missing the point. But Jesus explains the point in the last line of the Gospel: Stay awake! For you know neither the day nor the hour when... what? When the Bridegroom Jesus Christ returns to us. The undeniable truth is tomorrow, literally tomorrow Christ could return for us. Or, perhaps more likely, you or I could return to Him. For each of us, the day and the hour can be just a heartbeat, a single breath away. Even as I am writing this, I am listening to CNN reporting that 26 people were murdered in a church in Texas this morning. So, we should be asking ourselves, when the day and the hour arrive for us, will our lights still be burning? Our lamps grow dim when we avert our eyes from a homeless beggar or ignore a neighbor in need. And we let our lights go out when, encountering bigotry or hatred, we say and do nothing. But our lights grow stronger when we reach out to the unloved, the lonely, and the hurting. Our lights burn brighter, when, as we heard in the Gospel two Sundays ago, we love our neighbor as ourselves. In the Rite of Baptism, after the priest or deacon lights the baptismal candle, he hands it to the parents and godparents, and then he says this prayer: This light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. She is to walk always as a child of the light. May she keep the flame of faith alive in her heart. And when the Lord comes, may she go out to meet Him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom. This would be a good day to reflect on that prayer. God bless you. -- Deacon Tom

Life Choices, Inc. actively supports the women not only during their pregnancy but also after the baby is born. This year, OLMV will host the Life Choices, Inc. Baby Bottle Project November 4 through November 19. We are in need of a Level 1 (First Grade Catechist) as for the first time we are turning students away from attending religion classes. 5 PARISH REGISTRATION: In order to be considered a parishioner, all adults (persons 21 years of age or older) must complete a registration form which can be picked up at the parish office. Often, young adults who grew up in the parish don't realize that they must be registered on their own. Please remind young adults (family and friends) that they must register with the parish. Many young adults presume that they are registered because their parents are members of the parish. Once a person has reached adulthood, he or she must register in person to be considered a member of the parish. To be eligible to receive sacraments or to receive sponsor letters, persons must be registered and active members of OLMV. ELIGIBILITY LETTERS FOR GODPARENTS AND SPONSORS: Canon Law requires that a person seeking a sponsor letter to serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism or a Sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation be a Confirmed Catholic who is active in his or her church and, if married, be in a valid, Catholic marriage. An active Catholic is understood to be a person who is registered, attends Mass regularly, contributes to the support of the Church and whose lifestyle in keeping with the Catholic faith. At OLMV We Live the Corporal Works of Mercy: The parishioners of OLMV really do try to bring the Corporal Works of Mercy to life: A number of activities between now and Christmas really speak of our concern for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This weekend members of the Metuchen Diocese Right to Life Ministry are selling chances on a car. Proceeds assist the many Right to Life initiatives sponsored in our diocese. Also in support of Life is the annual Baby Bottle collection sponsored by Life Choices, Inc. It will take place here Nov. 19. Again, proceeds enable young women to choose life for their unborn babies. On November 18 and 19 we have our monthly food collection for FISH. Beginning this November, we are also instituting a new ministry (under the leadership of Catherine Schilp, a Senior at Bishop Ahr H.S. and a Girl Scout. Catherine is encouraging the younger members of our parish (with the support of their parents) to bring in a box of pasta or a jar of sauce on Children s Liturgy Sundays. This project, hopefully will have a twofold purpose of making sure that the shelves at the FISH food pantry don t empty and encouraging our younger parishioners (5-16) to develop a giving heart. The first Pasta or Sauce collection will take place also on the weekend of November Adrienne Sviderskis-Carroll is again spearheading our annual New & Used Coat Drive which will take place November 25 through December 3. We have provided coats, hats and gloves for hundreds of people and in Central New Jersey---many too poor to be able to afford new overcoats each year. Our annual Giving Tree will be set up right after Thanksgiving this year, and gifts will be distributed to around a dozen different organizations on December 11. Mary Czachur has graciously agreed to serve as chairperson of our Giving Tree project again this year. Feed the hungry. Shelter the homeless. Clothe the naked. The OLMV family really does look out for the less fortunate. As we come closer and closer to the birth of the baby Jesus, may I ask each family to consider supporting one of the projects. Remember, many parishioners, each doing a little, proclaim the presence of Jesus powerfully---right here in Central New Jersey. In the wake of the recent hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Florida, Louisiana and Texas, and the deadly earthquakes in Mexico, Bishop Checchio has asked that the diocesan-wide Disaster Relief Collection, originally intended to close September 30, be extended to support the relief and recovery efforts in the affected communities.
