Significant attention will be given to the personal experiences and theological perspectives which directed the actions of such persons as Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, as well as the movements they founded. The internet is especially valuable for accessing documents and the primary writings of the main actors in the 16 th century reform movements. However, the quality of internet resources is highly uneven and the student must be very judicious in the use of such sources. COURSE REQUIREENTS 1. A 8-12 page research paper (30% of grade). 2. A 30 multiple choice/true-false/short answer/fill in the blank midterm (30% of grade). 2. A 40 multiple choice/true-false/short answer/fill in the blank cumulative final exam. (40% of grade) COURSE STRUCTURE The course is divided into six (6) sections: I. 14th and 15th century developments and reform movements: Papacy, ycliffe, Hus, Conciliar ovement II. artin Luther III. John Calvin IV. Ulrich Zwingli and the Radical Reformation V. The English Reformation VI. The Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation

2 2 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES 1. To expose the student to the seminal primary sources or "raw materials" for the study and understanding of the Reformation. 2. To facilitate the informed discussion of the nature of Reformation in all its complexity and diversity. 3. To analyze selected primary documents essential for understanding the evolution of the Reformation from Luther to the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation, with emphasis on theological development. 4. To provide the student with a comprehensive historical overview of the major voices and movements that shaped the various reformation movements in the 16 th century. 5. To make possible, for students who may be neither estern, Christian nor Protestant, a sympathetic understanding of a major and influential movement within the Christian religious tradition, and whose influence on estern culture has been incalculable and defining. 6. To equip the student with the historical and conceptual framework that will allow him/her to pursue and explore in greater depth through a research paper a particular figure, topic, or aspect of the Reformation.
