This week I want to focus on our community, our team, and how we can make this school the most safe, welcoming, loving, and positive place for all of our children. I ve recently finished Brene Brown s book, Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead. It was a terrific read that looked at why we find being vulnerable so difficult. A couple of her ideas really stuck with me as I thought about how we all desire for our students and families to be part of the St. Ann Catholic family. She discussed how fitting in and belonging are not the same thing. Brene says that fitting in is one of the greatest barriers to belonging. She says, fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be in order to be accepted. Belonging, on the other hand, doesn't require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are. If we want to cultivate worthiness and a sense of belonging in our children, we need to make sure they know that their belonging is unconditional. She says that what makes that such a challenge is that most of us struggle to feel a sense of belonging to know we re part of something, not despite our vulnerabilities, but because of them. I love this and as I mentioned in my October 28 newsletter, we re all imperfect and that s what makes us human so lovable. Each child is a masterpiece of God, created with precision for a specific purpose. Ephesians 2:10 Our community is made up of all of us all of our students, teachers, staff, and families. Parents please don t allow your children to wait for you after school at the playground. There is NO supervision and there have been several close calls with students darting from the playground to the car line. We are only concerned for the safety of all of our students at St. Ann! Parent Volunteers the Christmas parties will be held on Tuesday, December 20 beginning at 2:15pm if you are interested in helping out! If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. Just a reminder that all students need to be checking their grades on Educonnect. 4 P A G E 4 Faith and Discipleship Virtue of the month: Gratitude With Thanksgiving fast approaching, November is a great month to focus on gratitude! Gratitude falls under the cardinal virtue of justice, and means having a thankful disposition of mind and heart. During your thanksgiving meal, perhaps consider giving everyone a chance to express their gratitude for someone or something from the past year. This can be a great opportunity to reflect on the many blessings we have received. Gratitude looks like: *Smiling at your mom or dad after they make you dinner *Saying "thank you!" *Writing a thank you note Feast of Christ the King: This weekend in the Church we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. Christ reigns overall and in a particular way He wants to reign in each of our hearts. This feast is a great opportunity for us to examine our lives and our hearts to see how we allow Him to do so. This feast marks the last weekend in the liturgical (Church) year, which means... Advent: Next weekend begins Advent. When the Church celebrates Advent each year, we take part in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming AND we renew our desire for his second coming. During Advent we hear a lot about John the Baptist. We can prepare for the Lord's coming using His example: "He must increase; I must decrease" (Jn 3:30). Conversation starters in your Family: -How is Christ the King of our Family? How can we allow Him into our hearts even more? -What would it have been like to live before the time of Jesus and to be waiting for the Messiah to come? -How can we better prepare for the Coming of the Lord this Christmas? (Examples: Pray as a family each night, cut back on activities, do less shopping, spend more time in silence) BLESSING OF AN ADVENT WREATH The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional practice which has found its place in the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another member of the family. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth. Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read: Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. From Catholic Household CHRISTIAN LEADER OF THE WEEK Abe Ismert Mrs. D Angelo s fourth grade has nominated Abe Ismert for saint of the week. Abe is always kind to others and helpful to anyone in need. Abe uses encouraging words to others and is Christ-like especially playing fair on the soccer field. Abe is a good example of JOY: Jesus first, others second, and yourself last. Thank you to Abe Ismert for bringing JOY to others by being an amazing friend to all!

5 P A G E 5 PUNT PASS AND KICK RESULSTS St. Ann had a great day in Tonganoxie last week! Cruz Garcia placed 3rd and Olivia Buck, Kate Lucas and Peyton Eakin all placed 1st. Olivia and Peyton had scores that qualify them to compete at the Chiefs game December 18th! Congratulations to all competitors. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART WOW!! Another fantastic year! 6 P A G E 6 A Volunteer Opportunity to Share your Heart/Time/Talent: Talent Show Coordinator Each Child is a masterpiece of God, created with precision for a specific purpose St. Ann School theme The Talent Show encourages and promotes the formation of our students, giving them the chance to build confidence, teamwork, and skill by taking the stage in front of and for their St. Ann community. The show also cultivates a supportive, safe and respectful tone as the community acts, also, as an audience. Job Description: Assemble the St. Ann Talent Show. Gather and lead a support team to communicate about, organize and execute a celebration and showcase of St. Ann students talents at the end of Catholic Schools week. 8 P A G E 8 Battle of the Books Dear Parents, The Battle of the Books (BOB) is a reading program designed to encourage children to read, to give recognition to those who like to read and to create a fun and competitive team atmosphere centered on the love of books. The program is open to students currently in the 4 th, 5 th and 6 th grades. The participants will read from a pre-selected list of 30 books. The number of books read by each child will depend on the child s interest. Battle of the Books will be held in April, The teams will compete in battles by answering questions about the books they have read. Although on team eventually wins, everyone in the program is a winner. Parents are invited to get involved in BOB as well. In fact, the success of the program depends on parent involvement. If you are interested in managing a team, please indicate so at the bottom of the sheet. Team leaders meet with their teams during lunch or after school, biweekly from November through April. Supporting the program at home is very beneficial, read a few pages of a book with your child at bedtime, ask your child about the book he or she is reading, take them to the library, etc. We encourage everyone to participate in this great program. Children who participate in BOB have a lot of fun being part of a team, and are exposed to some excellent literature in the process. Please complete the permission slip below and return to the library by November 29 th. I will divide the students into teams of 4-6 and teams will be announced by November 29. 10 P A G E 1 0 Mother s Club Christmas Dinner We are looking forward to the upcoming Mother s Club Christmas Dinner! The dinner will be on Wednesday, December 7 th at Carmen s Café in Brookside. Cost is $30 per person, which includes salad, your choice of entrée and dessert (tax and tip also included). Wine and spirits can be purchased separately. Please take some time in prayer this week to decide the portion of income you plan to give in thanksgiving. It is important that each school family share in the financial support of the parish since tuition only covers about 55% of the cost of education.
