The familiar is what s most comfortable to us. That s why we encircle ourselves with family, friends, parish, and neighborhood as a mini-solar-system we depend on to keep us in orbit. There s solace in our kind, and security in the known. The world, however, is always bigger than our clan. The Israelites got a taste of that after they returned from exile in Babylon. While the elders longed to escape the exotic realm of foreigners and get back to their land and their traditional ways, that wasn t going to be simple. After a generation in Babylon, many of their children had intermarried. Their own children were complete strangers to Israel. The foreigner, it seemed, was now also family. How should they deal with this new reality? Some promoted the divorce of all Babylonian wives and the banishing of their children. Isaiah spoke for a more compassionate and realistic course: to advance the definition of Israel to include all those faithful to their God and their story. If God makes room for the other, who are we to deny them? Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry. Are you a perfectionist, or do you live with one? You have my sympathy in either case. One thing is clear from every biblical description of the Pharisees: they didn t have a lot of sympathy for folks they deemed unclean. As seekers of moral perfection under the law of Moses, they avoided any who might contaminate their purity: sinners, the sick, women, and outsiders. We have a greater appreciation for Paul, a zealous Pharisee, in his decision to offer his life for the sake of the outside world Jews referred to as Gentiles, meaning the nations. After his encounter with the risen Lord, Paul spent the rest of his days eating with, living with, and pouring himself out for the unclean others he d previously avoided at all cost. Paul had too many experiences of how God selected Gentiles to receive the Holy Spirit to refuse them a share in the gospel. As the saying goes, only Nixon could go to China. It took a Pharisee like Paul to take the gospel to the nations. Oh woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. Even Jesus was impressed by the foreign woman who pursued Him for a healing for her daughter. As we know from reading the gospels, Jesus had His hands full in daily dealings with His fellow Jews. In fact, He withdrew from Jewish territory into Tyre and Sidon precisely to get a respite from that often-thankless battle. No wonder He s not anxious to respond when this Gentile comes running after Him with her needs! Matthew calls her a Canaanite, the ancient name for the native Palestinians from whom Israel had taken the land. (Luke calls her a Syro-Phoenician, which is how she might have described herself.) Canaanite was a slur, not much different from how Jesus compares her to a dog begging for scraps. Displaying more love than pride, the woman argues that even a dog gets the scraps if it begs enough. Jesus rewards her great faith. We can be sure that such faith will be rewarded in the many outsiders who cry out to God today for the compassion they are denied elsewhere.

3 Page Three August 20, 2017 My dear Parishioners, Mindful of what has been going on in Charlottesville, Virginia, all the violence that has transpired in that place, we are really seeing the disregard to human dignity and respect for human life. I am convinced that the love of God is the only way that can curb this violence and restore peace in the land. The love of God will surely bring that awareness that God can be found in the other person. Jesus revealed that truth to us by telling us with authority that whatever we do to the least of our sisters and brothers, we do unto Him! Let us continue to pray for our country that we as people of good will work together to bring the reality of God in all segments of our society, in our community and in our family. Here, I continue another excerpt from the Pastoral Letter of Archbishop Gomez: God is taken with love: Why the world was created and why we were made 8. The whole Christian religion comes down to one truth. We believe in a personal God who wants to share his life with us, a God who comes in search of us, who calls us to seek him and comes to help us find him. Christian faith is the personal response we make to the God who has humbled himself to take on human flesh being born of a mother s womb and raised in a human family, working with human hands and sharing in all the joys and sorrows of human life, even the extremes of physical and emotional suffering and death. [St. John Paul II, Tertio Millennio Adveniente, Apostolic Letter on Preparation for the Jubilee Year 2000 (November 10, 1994), 6 7] The question we need to ask ourselves is this: Why would the eternal and Almighty God go to such extremes to empty himself and make himself totally available and vulnerable, to put himself out there as a helpless infant? Why would he allow himself to be handed over to endure rejection and violence at the hands of the creatures that he himself created? What could make God do that? This is the mystery of divine love. No other explanation can make sense of it. His love is so impossible to imagine that some saints have described God like a divine suitor who is madly in love with us. The Bible, in fact, uses a similar image describing God s love for us as the love of a Bridegroom for his beloved. St. Catherine of Siena was so astonished by God s love for her that she was lifted into prayer: You are taken with love for her, for by love indeed you created her, by love you have given her a being capable of tasting your eternal good. [St. Catherine, Dialogue, 13; quoted in Catechism, 356] Love is why God created the world. The world is made for the glory of God and the world was made out of love! What God makes he loves and delights in, and all of nature is like a book through which God reveals his love for us. St. Thomas Aquinas said: Creatures came into existence when the Key of Love opened his hand. And Pope Francis tells us: The entire material universe speaks of God s love, his boundless affection for us. [Commentary on the Sentences, prol.; quoted in Catechism] And love is why God creates each one of us. We are not made as anonymous members of the human race. To each one of us, the living God continues to speak words of love, as he spoke to the prophets: I have loved you with an everlasting love. [Jer. 31:3] Peace, Fr. Riz

7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver Nik Alexander was with us this past week securing advertisers for our Bulletin. We would like to thank all of the advertisers who have renewed their ads for the upcoming year and also to all of our new advertisers who have generously committed to the Bulletin for this year. If you would be interested in sponsoring an ad for your business or on behalf of your favorite charity / organization there is still time. Please contact Nik Alexander on his mobile phone at (303) As a reminder, we ask that all of our members utilize these wonderful advertisers whenever possible. Please use the Bulletin as a resource whenever you are in need of products or services. Please let them know we truly appreciate their loyal support of our Bulletin. It is their generosity that provides the Bulletin at little or no cost to our Church. The Jubilee Year of Mercy is now in the history books and looking back I wonder if I have been changed at all by the observance. Certainly the focus on mercy wasn't all about God's mercy toward me? Yes, I focused on my sin and the need for God's forgiveness and grace, but hopefully that changed how I live my life and how I offer mercy to others. The mercy we receive from God is not something we are to keep bottled up or hidden from others. Jesus taught us to treat others the way we would like to be treated and to love everyone, even our enemies. When Jesus healed the Canaanite woman I wonder what she did next. I would hope she in turn offered mercy and healing to others. Of course, I know she was imperfect just like me so I am sure in no time she was back to needing the mercy of Jesus. Her demon was gone, but there is always a new evil around every corner. However, the fact that we are a broken people always in need of mercy does not lessen the command for us to offer mercy. Mercy is a gift like so many others that God lavishes on us with great generosity. We are called to cultivate this and share it with others as well. If we cannot do that then what was the real effect of God's mercy in our lives? If we do not allow God to change us into more generous stewards ready to offer mercy and love to all, then perhaps we are fooling ourselves that we are true disciples of Jesus at all. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS It is never a question with any of us of faith or no faith; the question always is, In what or in whom do I put my faith? ~Anonymous The Italian Catholic Federation will have a charity event at 7pm in St. Rose of Lima s Church. We will be raising money for the Fabry family, whose six-year-old son/grandson is fighting leukemia. 8 Page Eight St. Peter Claver Beginning Experience is a healing ministry for men and women who have experienced the loss of a spouse through death, divorce or separa on. A Beginning Experience weekend will be held on September 8-10, 2017, at Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino. This program helps a person move from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning with renewed hope. Beginning Experience is recognized by the Office of Family Life for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Please call in advance to register: Peg at (818) , Brenda at (818) or Maria at (310) (Spanish). Los Angeles chapter beginningexp.losangeles@gmail.com Beginning Experience ministry website: ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 ND AT 11am, a special Mass and anointing of the sick will be held for seniors and those in poor health. The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person s condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced. Food assistance for qualifying seniors What are Senior Kits? - Senior Kits are free boxes of food distributed once per month to qualifying seniors. Each box weighs pounds and contains canned fruits and vegetables; juice; canned meat and fish; beans or peanut butter; cheese; pasta or rice; cereal or oats; and shelf-stable milk. Where can I get Senior Kits? - The Simi Valley location is the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley, on the 2 nd Thursday of each month, from 9-11am. Home delivery is not available for this program. Each applicant is responsible for finding someone to pick up his/her food. Applicants must be present at the first distribution to register, then once a year for recertification. There are some eligibility requirements; applicants must be age 60 or older; reside in Ventura county (participants do not need to be United States citizens) and must meet the Senior Income Guidelines. Please see the bi-lingual Senior Kits flyers in the flyer racks near the main doors of the church for more details, and other distribution locations outside of Simi Valley. St. Peter Claver Parish is dedicated to the mission of protecting all God s children. One way of acting on this mission is to offer opportunities for education and screening to those called to serve the young of our community. If your volunteering plans include working with children in the coming months plan ahead! Our next opportunities here at St. Peter Claver will be Friday, September 15 th (for fingerprinting), Wednesday, September 13 th (for the initial VIRTUS certification) and Saturday, September 16 th (for VIRTUS re-certification). For more information or to make an appointment, please call Mary in the parish office at

To change the world we must be good to those who cannot repay us. Para solicitar una copia del artículo de VIRTUS To Tattle or Protect (Chismear o proteger), envíe un correo electrónico a bmelendez@la-archdiocese.org o llame al (213) Teach kids when to say something - It is important to help children understand the difference between telling on others and sharing information that could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don t tell mom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if someone asks them to keep a bad secret. Speaking up can save a kid from harm or abuse. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article To Tattle or Protect jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213)
