2 Dear Friends, February means Valentine s Day. Valentine s Day is a big day in our society - just ask the card or candy or flower companies! Valentine s Day is a day we tell our loved ones that we love them and that they matter to us. And so we say I love you with words and flowers and gifts because we want them to know how important they are to us. On Ash Wednesday we come to worship, have ashes smeared on our foreheads and are told, Remember, you are dust. Words that are blunt, stunning and can stop us short. Ash Wednesday reminds us clearly who we are made of dust, and in need of forgiveness. This year, Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day are on the same day. While it might seem that these days are very different from each other, their message is the same. Ash Wednesday does tell us with a few short words just who we are dust. But as we go through the season of Lent, we hear that though we are dust, and sinful, in need of forgiveness and grace, broken and imperfect, God loves us! Despite and in spite of who we are, God loves us enough to send Jesus to die for us and give us new life. In Jesus, God gives us a clear, bold message of love, and there is nothing we can do that will separate us from God s love. So while we hear on Ash Wednesday that we are merely dust, the rest of the story of God is that God loves us unconditionally - always, no matter what. A great message for Valentine s Day! So this year, as you celebrate Valentine s Day, remember who you are dust. But remember also that God s message is an unconditional Valentine s Day message: I love you always and no matter what! In Christ, Pastor Lynn Sharon gear is now for sale! You can purchase items such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, winter beanies and scarves, jackets, and fleece blankets to help support youth summer trips. Place your order at: Contact Rachel Miessler for more information. PLEASE LET US KNOW If you or a family member or friend from Sharon is in the hospital, please call the office and let us know so we can visit them. Pastors are at the hospital several times each week to visit our members, but sometimes names are not listed and so we miss seeing members that are there. You could help us by calling us when you know someone is in the hospital. We d rather hear a number of times that someone is hospitalized rather than not at all! A BIG thank you to all of you who contributed to God s Global Barnyard this year! Through your generosity, we were able to purchase: 1 food kit, 12 chicks, 5 goats, 3 honeybees, 5 pigs, 2 roosters and 1 school supply kit to help our neighbors around the world. God is indeed good!

3 Faith Formation Giving Opportunities On Sunday February 4, 2018, 160 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter and a warm meal. Please join others around the country as they demonstrate God s love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring. Pick up a paper sack at the church and fill it with a non-perishable food item and return to the church on Feb. 4th It s a simple, yet significant act of caring for others. We are called to be part of God s work in the world. Through ELCA World Hunger we work toward a just world where all are fed. Together, we achieve things on a scale and scope we could never do otherwise. Resolution #3 at our Spring 2017 Eastern starts Feb. 14th North Dakota Synod Assembly resolved to challenge us to annually raise $2.29 per baptized member for World Hunger. Sharon Lutheran s baptized membership is 3,800. That brings our annual World Hunger contribution goal to $8,702. During the season of Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 14 th, World Hunger donation boxes and envelopes will be available for you to pick up on tables in the narthex and at the Welcome Center. During our 40 Days of Giving our board has chosen to raise up and support programs for Malawi, a landlocked small country on the east side of Africa. One third of the country is a lake leaving about 32,205 square miles for just over 18 million people. (To help put that in perspective our state of North Dakota is 68,994 square miles with about 758,000 people.) The poverty rate in Malawi was 50.7% in This is only slightly down from 52.4% in In Malawi, many children especially those 5 and younger don t receive enough food. Our neighbors in Malawi face some of the highest rates of HIV, malaria and other preventable diseases. Rural families are especially vulnerable. Some rural communities are located hours or days away from the nearest health care facility often with a bicycle ambulance the only transportation available. That s why the church is increasing its health and wellness outreach in Malawi so that our neighbors are more easily connected to life-giving care when they need it most. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM), with support from ELCA World Hunger, is working to treat and prevent the spread of disease in the village of Chidyamanga, and in the Chikwawa, Dedza and Mangochi districts of Malawi. The ELCA goal is to raise $203,000 for the Health and Wellness programs in Malawi. During Lent, our 40 days of Giving, you will hear more about Malawi. Let us walk alongside our neighbor as they address hunger in their community. The Board of Church in Society

8 FAITH FORMATION MINISTRIES FEBRUARY 2018 NEWS STORIES TO SHARE... In November, our students heard from Geoff Gaukler (Grand Forks Public Schools Counseling Program) and Sandy Kovar (Together We Educate About The Realities Of Suicide) on the topics of suicide prevention and what we can do if we or someone we know is struggling with feelings of loneliness, depression, or isolation. (Please put this hotline number in your phone, and encourage your loved ones to do the same: TALK) In December, our students participated in Operation: Christmas Cheer, creating cards for soldiers and blankets for homebound members and local agencies, ringing the bell for Salvation Army, volunteering with Santa Village and other organizations, and cleaning our church building. Last month, our Confirmation students met at the Chester Fritz Auditorium and heard from Jonathan Swenson (paraphrasetheatre.com) at our Citywide Confirmation event. Jonathan s unique drama ministry made the story of Jesus life, death, and resurrection vivid and real for all those in attendance. We are thankful to be able to gather with other ELCA congregations in our region! I am amazed and humbled by the presence of these students each and every week. These young people will serve as worship assistants throughout the season of Lent., and many of them will take part in the mission trip to Duluth, Minnesota (middle school) or the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas (high school) this summer. They show a desire to be a part of this congregation and community in real and meaningful ways, and it is our hope and prayer that these young people grow in their relationship with God, each other, and the world around them. We thank you for your support and prayers as we partner with you on this faith journey. GOT STOCK? Thank you for your support! Youth Stock is a great way to invest in our youth! Sharon members love this fundraiser because instead of buying a product, supporters invest in changing lives. Your youth stock donation helps provide faith-centered ministry opportunities focused on discipleship, learning together, growing in faith, and transforming lives. Your investment helps provide transportation for retreats and events, service opportunities, scholarships, adult leader training, and yearly mission trips. It also supplements the general fund to help provide weekly programs like Alive! (upper elementary), 4G (middle school), and Re:New and Bible studies for high school students. Because of your prayers, your listening ears, and your support of youth stock, Faith Formation Ministries continue to thrive. If you haven t already, please consider IMPORTANT FORUM FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS: On Wednesday, April 4th at 7:15 p.m., Sharon Lutheran Church will host a rescheduled public forum in the Sanctuary on the topic of: TECHNOLOGY: HOW TO USE IT APPROPRIATELY Representatives from the Grand Forks Public Schools will share information and resources, hosts will facilitate interactive learning, and there will be time for questions and further discussion. 12 Health Ministries Hand-Up Program The Health Ministry Team sponsors a Hand-Up Program. We know that there are some members of our congregation that sometimes need a little help with the expenses of daily life. Maybe it is food for the family this week, a new pair of shoes for the kids or a tank of gas to get to work. Most likely, we have all been there sometime during our life. So, when we can, we would like to offer our fellow friends at Sharon a Hand-Up. If you need help or know of a Sharon member that needs help (with their permission) please let a pastor or Health Ministry team member know. The Health Ministry Team relies solely on congregational support. We do not have a designated church budget. We would appreciate your support in either of two ways a $20 gift card from a gas station, grocery store or retail store or a family donation. Please leave your gift cards and/or donations in the church office. Please designate for the Health Ministry Team Hand-Up Program. Thank you for your help. We make a difference during a friends stressful time. The Pastors will confidentially work with members of our congregation that need this support during the year.
