2 Pastor s Message Dear Beloved Church, As I write this, I m sitting in a deceptively sunny, warm office, in the midst of one of the coldest days we ve had, thus far this winter. I don t know about you, but at this point in the year, the cold, ice, and snow start to feel as though they ve been here forever. I suspect this is the time of year when many of us find ourselves huddled up, doing our utmost to avoid the cold whether we re dashing from our warm cars to warm workplaces or homes, or pulling our scarves up after that blast of cold air that chaps our faces coming out of the supermarkets, or grumbling to ourselves after sliding on yet another hidden layer of ice. Growing up in Bemidji, I remember so many winters when it felt much easier to stay home, warm, cuddled up, and out of the cold. However, it was during those times when I did get out to meet that friend for coffee, to join that Bible Study, to visit my grandparents, or going for breakfast at Perkins, were some of the highlights of the winter. These are the moments that remind me of all the ways we need one another of the light we can bring to each other during these long winter days. I was blessed to have many of these light-giving moments during the 9th grade retreat last weekend. We traveled to the beautiful LutherCrest Bible Camp in Alexandria, MN, for two days of learning, fun, and fellowship together. Even facing some truly chilly temperatures, these 9th graders embodied that joyful, light-giving spirit as they boldly grabbed inner tubes for sledding down LutherCrest s big hill, and with shouting and laughter, slid out onto the lake for a game of broomball. They shared this same light-giving spirit during our learning time as we discussed the Baptismal Promises they will be confirming for themselves next fall and shared some of their family faith stories. They shared their thoughts about the most amazing things discussing faith in the face of fear, justice, causes they are passionate about, their perspective on where God s love is active in the world, their hope for the future, their dreams of a better world. They talked about miracles, ways they pray, and what heaven might be like. It was a truly sacred, blessed time. In this season of Epiphany, we talk a lot about the ways we see God showing up or manifesting in our lives, but last weekend, these 9th graders reminded me of the great importance of all the ways we can show up for one another. In this this season of Epiphany, the Season of Light, I was thankful for a whole weekend of remembering the power and brilliance of the light we each carry inside of us light given to us through the gift of Christ s love for each of us. It is this love that shines when we care for one another -in ways more numerous than those brilliant winter stars, but like the light of the Star those Wise Men were following when this Season began, it is this light that so often leads us into places of belonging, acceptance, and love unlike any we ve ever known. And it is this light that gives us the ability to make these safe, beautiful places of belonging and love for one another. Thank you for all you do to make LCC one of these places. And thank you for your generosity and support that made our 9th grade retreat possible! May Christ s light lead you to so much love during these long winter days. Christ s Peace Pastor Megan
