2 Dear Friends, I was able to spend the 4 th of July in the cities with my family. It will probably be a surprise to no one, but I also was able to attend the Twins game that day! Danny Gladden, a former Twins player who now is a radio announcer for the Twins, spent that game as the Ball Dude down the left field foul line, live on the radio. Always a gamer, Danny wanted to be back on the field in the middle of things again, and this was a way he could do that. It was interesting to listen as the game wore on and there were no foul balls for him to retrieve. He began pounding his glove and saying Come on, hit me one! Hit it over here! He wanted to be a part of the game, even if it was in foul territory. Sitting on the sidelines is ok, but it s not the same as being a part of the game. Sharon is a big church, and it s easy and sometimes comfortable to sit on the sidelines and watch. Back in the 90 s there is what was called Entertainment Evangelism where people simply came to worship, sat back and watched (were entertained ) and then decided if they liked it enough to come back. Entertain me, and if you do a good job, I ll come back! But being a Christian is not a passive thing. To be a Christian is to be a follower, which means being active, doing something, participating, being involved. It is not sitting on the sidelines watching, or sitting back and being entertained. It is being a part of the work and ministry of the Church. Participating in ministry is obviously good for the church, for Sharon. We have a stronger ministry when everyone is involved. Our work and our message will be better seen and heard. We can do more when everyone has a part in ministry. But participating in ministry also is good for each one of us. It is through what we do that we grow in faith. As we participate in ministry, we are touched by God, we see God s presence and feel God s love. Whether we serve communion or teach or mentor youth or read lessons or serve a meal, we grow in faith, and find that truly, God works through what we do and God s presence is felt. Living in faith is not simply attending worship and giving something each week. Living in faith is what we do, how we spend our days. It is hearing God s call and following instead of sitting on the sidelines and watching. We will be blessed in what we do, and we will grow in faith! Don t sit on the sidelines. In baptism you have been called to Let your light so shine before others that they might see your good works, and give glory to your Father in heaven. There is a place for you, and a need for you. Be a follower! In Christ, Pastor Lynn Wednesday Worship Worship is central to faith, and is a time to be reminded of God s love for us. With summer and time away on weekends upon us, remember that we have worship every Wednesday at 6:15pm as well as on Sunday mornings. If you will be out of town on Sunday, consider worshipping on Wednesday. Make worship a weekly habit! We miss you when you are not here! Thank you for your Response to the letter asking for financial help. Your response has helped us begin to catch up and is very much appreciated! Our ministry is dependent on your giving, and we appreciate your gifts!

3 Faith Formation Giving Opportunities "A Miracle Box was created on the corner of Sharon Lutheran Church to spread awareness of the poverty existing in Grand Forks. A list of possible donation items (ranging from non-perishable food items to winter survival necessities) is available at a collection site in the narthex and on the corner of the box itself. Items may be donated or used by anyone at any time of the day, to allow for an easy process. The box will be monitored on a weekly basis by Red River High School DECA members, and those students are also in charge of watching for products that do not fit the guidelines; these products will be donated to the Boys and Girls Ranch. Sharon Lutheran Church is thankful to be able to partner with these students on this project! Stewardship Corner: Faith Formation Giving is more than a responsibility-it is a privilege; more than an act of obedience-it is evidence of faith. 5 Help our SON flower blossom! Our Summer Stewardship Campaign theme this year is As Our Stewardship Grows, Our Church Blossoms! For every $100, our SON flower in the narthex will gain a petal. Our goal is this year is to raise $5,000. As of today, there are 46 petals. Our SON flower still needs help growing. Pick up one of the speciallymarked green envelopes from the narthex and return your donation in the offering plate or bring to the church office. As our stewardship grows, our church blossoms! The Lord s Prayer During these summer months, the Lord s Prayer will be prayed using the contemporary wording which we used during the Lenten season. This wording was first used almost forty years ago when it was presented in our Lutheran Book of Worship as an option to the traditional wording of the Lord s Prayer. The newer version was a joint ecumenical venture to provide a more current wording eliminating some archaic language and providing a common wording that could be used in many denominations. It is helpful for Christians to be familiar with both the traditional and contemporary wording; therefore we will use the contemporary wording at all of our summer worship services. 7 Health Ministries Hand-Up Program The Health Ministry Team sponsors a Hand-Up Program. We know that there are some members of our congregation that sometimes need a little help with the expenses of daily life. Maybe it is food for the family this week, a new pair of shoes for the kids or a tank of gas to get to work. Most likely, we have all been there sometime during our life. So, when we can, we would like to offer our fellow friends at Sharon a Hand-Up. If you need help or know of a Sharon member that needs help (with their permission) please let a pastor or Health Ministry team member know. The Health Ministry Team relies solely on congregational support. We do not have a designated church budget. We would appreciate your support in either of two ways a $20 gift card from a gas station, grocery store or retail store or a family donation. Please leave your gift cards and/or donations in the church office. Please designate for the Health Ministry Team Hand-Up Program. Thank you for your help. We make a difference during a friends stressful time. The Pastors will confidentially work with members of our congregation that need this support during the year. Friend to Friend Ministry Are you going through a life changing event? Having someone to talk to who has wisdom and experience to share can be a life saver to the person who is feeling overwhelmed by a new diagnosis or serious life changing event. Some examples are: a new diagnosis of cancer, diabetes, MS, heart disease, mental illness, stroke, paralysis; loss of a job, parent entering a Nursing Home, and the list can go on and on. If you would like more information please contact the church office. -Care Baskets The Health Ministry Team has created Care Baskets for members of Sharon Lutheran that are experiencing significant health conditions. If you know someone that would enjoy a Care Basket (with their permission) please call the church office. Health Ministry Team Members The Health Ministry Team is looking for new members. It is the goal of the team to support a variety of activities that focus on the emotional, physical and spiritual health of the congregation. Some of our activities include: Care Basket Ministry, Hand-Up Program, Congregational Potlucks, Safe Kids Sunday, Undies Sundays, Faithfully Fit, Care of the Church Plants. Please consider joining our team. Current members include: Bernell Bachmeier, Ginger Johnson, Jodi Boettner, Lisa Lloyd and Cindy Siders. For more information, please Cindy Siders at: cindysiders@gra.midco.net. TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY Are you unable to attend church because of a health reason or disability? The Health Ministry Team provides rides through Grand Forks Taxi/Nodak Taxi. Call the church office for more information. This program is dependent on your congregational donations. Please consider sending a contribution so that we can keep this important ministry going. Thank you.

8 FAITH FORMATION MINISTRIES August 2017 News Many of your favorite programs and ministries will continue to thrive and grow during this upcoming year, but we re also pleased to announce a few changes and additions that will help us all grow in faith together and become lifelong followers of Jesus. Here are a few highlights... Here s why we re excited about the time we spend with our high school students... The format and learning style for our 9th grade confirmation continue to evolve. *NEW* five : sixteen ministry for 10th-12th graders will focus on service, community involvement, and leadership. We continue to help youth understand and grow their faith through ministries like the fall Castaway retreat (a registration form can be found on page 3), weekly youth group (Re:New), Bible study opportunities, and the ELCA Youth Gathering (Houston) in 2018! Uniquely You Bible Study for high school girls - contact Rachel for more information! With our upper elementary students Alive! will begin in October - this is a great way for our third, fourth, and fifth graders to gather, connect, have fun, and talk about faith and life together! We continue to celebrate important faith milestones with these young people and their families, and it is a privilege to accompany parents and guardians as they fulfill baptismal promises. With our middle school students... Castaway Club is coming up soon (a form is inside), and 4G is a weekly opportunity to Gather, Grow, and Go with God. In Confirmation, we ll spend the upcoming year in Luther s Small Catechism, learning more about Baptism, Communion, the Lord s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed, and much, much more! A summer 2018 mission trip opportunity! And in youth music ministries (K-8th grade)... A BRAND NEW music opportunity for all of our students to make music together and older students to develop into leaders - Wednesdays from 4:45-5:15 p.m. in the choir room. During the first week of August, our high school mission trip group will be traveling to Northern Cheyenne, MT to participate in a week-long mission trip with YouthWorks. This experience is designed to create opportunities for our young people to learn and grow while they serve the residents of NoChey and practice their faith in real and tangible ways. Our students will be focusing on children s programming (Bible lessons, games, crafts, and reading), and sports -based programming for community youth. Our group will also be spending a day in Medora processing their experiences and enjoying the Medora Musical. Watch for stories and photos from this group soon, and thank you so much for your prayers and support! ~ Rachel Miessler Ringers Of Faith! We have a new music ministry at Sharon Lutheran Church Ringers Of Faith! Are you a middle school or high school student who is interested in learning how to play handbells? You can find more information elsewhere in the Sharon newsletter, or contact Roxanne Gessler or Rachel Miessler to indicate your interest!

9 FAITH FORMATION MINI STRIES **NEW** During the program year, we are offering something completely different at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays and 5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays (11:00 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. will remain the same classroombased model that has served our congregation well for many years). For the earlier time on each day, Sharon Lutheran is embarking on a yearlong trial of crossgenerational church school, which is designed for families and multiple generations to learn and grow in faith together! Please contact Meg or Pastor Dominique to register or for additional information. Parents, please keep in mind that our 6:15 p.m. Church School session is a preferred time for many families. Should you wait until late August to register for this time, there is a real chance that many of the classes will be filled. We are blessed to have over 400 students participate in our weekly church school classes. However, with these blessings comes a challenge to provide volunteers to fill each class. Please prayerfully consider being a church school volunteer. We can tell you that your time will be a gift to children as well as to yourself. You will have the opportunity to experience God s abundant blessings through the time you share with these children. You can feel confident to volunteer because you will be supported by easy-to-follow weekly directions and precut supplies. You will be provided with training and support by Faith Formation Ministries staff all year long. Please contact Meg Harrington with any additional questions ( ext. 207) or see the sign-up sheet on the wall outside South Hall. Please note that you can also sign up to team teach any of these sections. Church School and LWR School Kit Supplies Needed: Scotch Tape Band-Aids Glue sticks Play-Doh Washable Markers 2 1/2 erasers Water color paints w/ brushes Dry Erase markers and erasers Boxes of crayons (16 or 24) 70-sheet notebooks (wide or college) Black or blue ballpoint pens Unsharpened #2 pencils Blunt scissors 30-centimeter rulers Items can be dropped off in the Faith Formation offices. Class sizes are limited for both your child s safety and to allow the volunteers the best opportunity to share God s word. Our weekly Confirmation program includes students from 6th - 9th grade. Confirmation meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7:15 8:15 p.m. (Sept.-April, and not during Lent). Confirmation includes a weekly large group presentation by pastors, staff, and guest speakers. Volunteers are needed as Small Group Guides (6th-8th grade) and Leaders (9th grade). These volunteers facilitate discussion based on the presentation and also have an opportunity to be blessed by the relationships they build with these students. If you are wondering where God might be calling you to put your faith into action, please prayerfully consider spending an hour each week with some youth who need caring adults in their lives. Please contact Dave Berger ( ext. 208 or dberger@sharonlutheran.org) or see the sign-up sheet on the wall outside South Hall. Thank you!
