1 NEWSLETTER Historic Rev. Corey Grunklee Vacancy Pastor OFFICE HOURS Tuesday thru Friday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm 2221 Avenue W Lubbock, TX
2 Amos 3:8 The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy? John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Dear Fellow Redeemed, As I write this, we are approaching the halfway point of our Lenten journey, and of course, March is upon us. It has been windy in Lubbock (surprise!) and the old saying about March s weather, In like a Lion and out like a Lamb, has been playing in my mind. I got to thinking about it, and how terribly appropriate that is for our focus on Jesus this time of year. We began Lent with a focus on the roar of God, like a Lion, warning people to repent and turn to God for forgiveness and life. Indeed, we see Jesus, the King of the World, turning over tables and demonstrating zeal for the House of the Lord. We see Jesus rebuking the self-righteous, the proud, and the unteachable. We see His relentless march to the cross in order to pay the price for sin and satisfy the wrath of God. We hear His roar, feel the heat of His breath, and suffer under the weight of our disobedience. March, this year, will end on the Holiest of weekends. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday will bring March to an end. Regardless of the weather, we will turn our attention to the only relief, peace, and salvation there is: The Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world. We will see how Jesus became sin for us. He became the sacrifice to satisfy God and pay for our stubborn, sinful ways. His blood that He shed covers us like a comforting blanket of forgiveness, righteousness, grace, and power. May God fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith: the faith in Christ that saves! Yours in Christ, Pastor Grunklee

6 LUBBOCK UPBRING ADVISORY BOARD NOTES February 12, 2018 Opening prayer led Joy Loper. There were 8 in attendance. FOSTER KIDS (FIT)/ University, Suite 2, Lubbock, phone There are 41 kids in placement. There were two adoptions last month. There are five new families in process and should have two new homes open this month. One Case Manager is leaving at the end of the month so a new employee has been hired to take her position. Please keep the FIT office in your prayers as their days are not just Monday-Friday from 8-5 but is 365 days a year 24/7, which makes life complicated. (HFF) HEALTH FOR FRIENDS th, Lubbock, 79401, phone Numbers are down a little at some of the sites, mostly due to the cold weather and a holiday. The clinic shows 77, Lubbock Seniors 66, Methodist Mission 61, and most of the other outreach sites were less. A total of 494 were screened during the month. Nurses are presenting a nutrition class at the Food Bank so the number should go up from the 23 that was screened during January. Twelve showed up for the glucose test strip program and one glucometer was distributed. The prescription program assisted 13 for a total of $371. There were 94 screened in the outreach sites for the first time ever and 6 in the clinic. Six clients were assisted with diabetic education and one newly diagnosed client. They are getting more referrals for the community health center so numbers should go up. (NH) NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE th Street, Suite 102, Lubbock 79401, phone The funds from the CEAP grant (Community Energy Assistance Program) was received early this year so 100 received utility assistance for just under $32,000. There were 259 households assisted and the value of the services was approximately $43,570. Last week, the Tech Club held Cocktails for a Cause benefitting Upbring programs. Our programs received the proceeds from the cash bar and tips, a live and silent auction, and a drawing for a year s membership to the Tech Club. Approximately $ was raised. We look forward to the possibility of the Tech Club presenting this again. It also promoted our annual Spring Fling, April 6, The allocation request for United Way is being prepared and gearing up for the annual report to United Way. We are in the third year of our five year approval for funds. We received $15,000 from the CH Foundation which helps with our program costs. NEEDS Bars of Bath Soap and always needed Children s books from toddler to teenage chapter books. Most needed are the toddler board books. Can always use the sandwich size plastic bags with a sealed closure. Walmart has some reasonable priced ones. STATE BOARD A report was distributed detailing a previous State Board meeting. SPRING FLING April 6, 2018 at the McKenzie-Merket Center. Tickets can be purchased online at Upbring.org; Select the Events tab and scroll to Spring Fling and follow directions. Donations for items for the live and/or silent auction will be appreciated. Just bring them to Neighborhood House. Gift cards are always useful and are a good addition to baskets. Unfortunately, Monica missed our meeting today as she had jury duty and will be serving on a jury all week. Keep her in your prayer! Meeting closed with the Lord s Prayer. LaVerne Stolle, Secretary
7 The LWML Mission project for March is the Baby Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief and Diapers for Neighborhood House. The list of needed items is displayed in the Parish Hall. The LWR Packing Day is on March 24th at 10:00 a.m. Remember to bring your postage stamps to LWML. Just cut them off the envelopes, with a generous space around them, bring them to church with you, and place them in the mail box in the LWML Area. These stamps are sent to Austin and are sold to a collector. Funds from this sale are used to ship items to Lutheran World Relief. If you don t have time to trim the stamps, just bring the envelopes in and we will trim them as required by the collector. MITES! If you would like to be involved in the good works that our Mites do, you can pick up a box from the LWML table in the Parish Hall. The Mission Grants approved for the biennium is $175,000, as approved at the Texas District LWML Convention. It is amazing what these small amounts will do. At the end of the day, you can put your loose change in the box then bring your full box to church and give it to Jana Taff or Jonelle Oswalt. LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF BABY CARE KITS Redeemer LWML voted to collect items for Lutheran World Relief throughout the entire year instead of just one month. We collect items for the Baby Care Kits which are sent in April each year. The items listed are for each "Baby Care Kit" for Lutheran World Relief, sizes can be 0 to 24 months, and gently used items can be used: 2 lightweight cotton t-shirts 2 gowns or sleepers WITHOUT feet 2 blankets, up to 52" square 4 cloth diapers, flat-fold preferred 1 jacket, sweatshirt OR sweater with hood or cap 2 pair baby socks 1 hand towel, dark color 2 bath-size bars soap (4-5 oz. ea.), in original packaging 2 diaper pins or large safety pins If you can help with any of these items, we have a cradle and display in the Parish Hall. Please put your items there. Thank you all for your support of the LWML Mission projects. Redeemer is collecting Box Tops for Dupre Elementary School. There is a basket in the Parish Hall for these coupons. Krista Holder is in charge of this program, please see her if you have any questions. Thanks for your help to support our adopted school. The Quilting Group meets regularly, on the second Monday of each month, to prepare quilts for Lutheran World Relief. The group would like to thank all of you who have donated sheets for this project. At this time, they have enough to complete quite a number of quilts. If you like to quilt, please come join them.
