I find myself humming tunes like In The Good Ol Summer Time and Roll Out Those Lazy, Hazy Crazy Days of Summer! Most of us associate summer time with a bit more relaxed schedule, perhaps more time for recreation, vacation get-aways and generally kicking back and taking it easy. For churches, it is often the slow season when things get put on autopilot until Fall rally day. Not this year! Not at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church! In fact, this summer is an important time in the life of our congregation, as the Call Committee is seeking that person who will be called as our next installed pastor. I hope that you share my sense of eager anticipation as this new chapter in Concordia s history is about to begin. This brings me to the 5 th and final task of interim ministry. It is expected that an interim pastor will do everything possible to encourage the congregation to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to a new pastor, AND, offer to pitch in and help in any way that would help that pastor have a smooth and successful start up in this new context for ministry. I know this congregation well enough by now, that there is no doubt in my mind that you all would automatically do this out of your spirit of kindness and generosity that I have seen demonstrated at every turn here at Concordia. Any pastor would be fortunate indeed to receive a call to this corner of God s kingdom. Having said that, this might be a good time for you all to be thinking about what you can contribute to a new pastor s successful entrance and start-up. How can you contribute to the welcome? What might you like to offer in the way of assistance? What encouragement would you like to extend? In what new directions and initiatives in ministry and mission would you like to offer your help and participation? Enjoy your summer. Continue to support your church through the summer months. And dare to have great expectations, as Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church marches on into the future God is leading us toward. 3 Yours in Christ s Service, Pastor Burt

4 Call Committee Information The following people are serving on our Call Committee: Bertie Schoenherr, Pat Morris, Carol McDonald, Dave Kolsun, Bob Null and Derek Zercher. They have begun their task in the call process as synod has reviewed and approved our Mission Profile report. The Call Committee is a special committee elected by council to seek out, with the guidance of synod, a pastor whom it can recommend to the council. Except for updating the congregation in general terms on the progress of the call process, the Call Committee is to report only to the council. Please keep them in our prayers and give them our support as they continue our journey towards calling our next pastor. If you have any thoughts, questions or concerns as regards the call process please share them with any council member. Thoughts on the Synod Convention While it is true that God gives us all the ability to be independent thinkers, it is quite obvious that we all are truly on in the body of Christ. It was gratifying to see and hear how God s work is ably being done by our hands, regardless of the size of the congregation. Concordia should feel very proud of the outreach we do and our support of the synod initiatives. We think we are merely a single thread, but as we go about trying to do the work God has challenged us with, we are actually weaving our thread in with others to produce this grand tapestry that is the body of Christ! Yard Sale & Open House Review! Through fellowship, fun and your many donations, we were able to make $1200 for our beloved Concordia on Saturday s, June 9th, yard sale/open house. In preparation for our Open House, business cards (2 different sizes) with our service times /contact information were developed and placed in new outdoor information boxes on the front lawn and in the cemetery entrance (in time for the many visitors over Memorial Day). Cards are available for our members to carry as an easy reference when speaking to prospective members and are always available on the Concordia Cat s Meow table in the west narthex. See Facing Page for More>>> CLASSIC MOVIE BUFFS Bye Bye Birdie Tuesday, July 17, 2012 (Third Tuesday of each month) 1:30 P.M. at the home of David Zimmerman 639 Hempfield Hill Road Columbia This picture features great songs and lots of humor. Teenage heart-throb Conrad Birdie has been drafted and the nations teens become hysterical. To cash in on this, Albert (Dick Van Dyke) and his girlfriend, (Janet Leigh) have a contest to give Conrad a farewell kiss on the "Ed Sullivan Show." Kim (Ann Margaret) turns out to be the lucky teenager who wins. Excitement and hysteria ensue. Everyone is Welcome! RSVP: CLASSIC MOVIE BUFFS Guys and Dolls Tuesday, August 21, 2012 (Third Tuesday of each month) 1:30 P.M. at the home of David Zimmerman 639 Hempfield Hill Road Columbia Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its Broadway Debut in 1938! A pretty missionary (Jean Simmons) sets up shop in the neighborhood and Nathan (Sinatra) bets that Sky Materson (Brando), big time gambler, can't seduce her. All bets are off when Sky falls in love. The Big Apple was never the same as seen in this romantic musical. Come and sing along - "Luck Be the Lady", "A Woman in Love." Everyone is Welcome! RSVP:

5 Hospitalized We have recently learned of several cases where members have been admitted to the hospital and we have not received any notification from the hospital. In some cases, the patient even provided the name of their church during the admission process and we still did not receive any notification. This totally undermines our ability to offer proper pastoral care and can no longer depend upon receiving word of admissions from any of our local hospitals or rehabilitation facilities. We must make an appeal to you to call the church office if you or a member of your family is admitted to the hospital. This is the only way that we can be assured of offering adequate pastoral coverage, and will also allow us to keep the prayer list in our worship bulletin current. Thanks in advance for your help. Opportunities There is a signup sheet in the Nursery for the 2012 Nursery Schedule. Some of our members are not able to attend services due to transportation or mobility issues. Social Ministry is trying to arrange volunteers to provide rides to church services for these members. There will be a sign up sheet in the west narthex for people who are willing to help. Please give name, phone number and list area that you live in and the service you are most likely to attend. If you need a ride, check the sign up sheet for a volunteer in your area. Volunteer list will be published in the newsletter later to let everyone know who to contact if transportation is needed. Newspaper articles are needed. I am ready to start our second Concordia Newspaper Clippings scrap book. Please cut out any thing found in any papers, etc. regarding any of our members or church. Any thing and everything needed. Put them in the Archives file box in the new message center or to the church office. Also needed is anything else that would be of interest regarding our church and members, past and present. The first completed scrap book (large red book) can be found in the library. Thank you. Charlie Ezren 8 Wow! Great news for Concordia: A Rousing Success for our Yard Sale & Open House! Thank you to our Fellowship Committee who deftly manned the food stations/bake sale with coffee, donuts, hot dogs, cold drinks, and baked goods. Luckily, many were hungry and thirsty when they arrived. What a wonderful opportunity to establish contacts with our close Springhill neighbors and others. Suffice it to say that the East parking lot was FULL for the entire Saturday; it was amazing to see so many people streaming in and engaged with us at our church. Thank you Holy Spirit! Several special highlights: An African American young man arrived early and bought 80% of the shoes we had, to send them back to Africa. A young newly-married woman bought a lighted Christmas tree for their first Christmas together. Concordia s old altar railing was sold to a woman renovating an old farm house in Manheim. A large Amish family came in their buggy and tied it up in the front yard in the shade. Many buying food did not want change, making a donation and creating a bond. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! We want to thank the Evangelism Committee who took this on as a meaningful challenge. (Stop and take a look at the pictures in either narthex.) Further, we want to thank all those who donated treasured items, those who baked items, those who helped administratively, those who were the hands on team to set-up and break down, those who worked the sale day, and those who came and bought our treasures. We couldn t have done this without ALL of your help. Yes. There will be another sale next year. So, if you were unable to participate this year, put it on your calendar early so you are free to experience this next year. Carol McDonald, Co-Chair Carole Daley, Co-Chair 5 All modes of transportation came!

6 Thank you so much to Everyone who made Vacation Bible School a Huge Success! Thanks to Kathy Ockrymiek and her committee for planning VBS this year. We appreciate Carol McDonald s commitment in sharing her vision, energy, organization, and creativity to make this week memorable for all the participants. Many thanks to every one who made VBS possible our kitchen staff, adult leaders, music director, our craft and game volunteers, and our older youth who pitched in with aiding all the little ones. Thank you to Pastor Burt for his encouragement and help. Thanks to all who helped create our Babylon set, and donated supplies used throughout the week. We had an average of 20 children each night. They enjoyed crafts, games, songs, snacks and story time, learning about Bible Heroes in the Old Testament and present Day "God sightings." Their contributions to the Malaria Campaign enabled us to send 12 mosquito nets to save the lives of children in Africa. Congratulations Blessing of the Graduates was held on Sunday, June 10 during the service. Anyone who would like to contribute their talent, please see Phyllis Keck or sign up in the west narthex. Chimers We are also looking for chimers for summer music. Anyone volunteering should be able to read music and be able to give us a 2 consecutive-sunday commitment each month, the first Sunday would be practice during coffee time, and the second Sunday we would perform.
