Quantity Baked Unbaked Amount Due Pastor Burt s Byline Well, here it is... my final Byline to. I find that my thoughts at this time are filled with gratitude to God for the amazing works of the Holy Spirit that together, we all have observed over the past 17 months. Back in March of 2011, I would say that perhaps the prevailing mood of the congregation could be described as a sense of loss and uncertainty with just a little dash of chaos thrown in to make it interesting. The significant loss of active members involved in leadership, including 2/3 s of the Council, would be a huge blow to any congregation. Yet through it all, there was abundant faith at work in the lives of countless people who were willing to step up and take on new assignments and tasks. As I look back, I am reminded of one of my ordination vows: to serve with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. That is exactly what I saw happening in the congregational life of Concordia, as the Holy Spirit was using the many gifts and talents that so many of you offered up in service to Christ s church. There is something very unique about interim ministry. We interim pastors arrive on the scene focused on the goal of completing a task and leaving. As a result, I can fully share in the joy and enthusiasm that all of you feel as you begin a new chapter in ministry and mission with Pastor Mary Anne Kingsborough. How gratifying to see all those prayers for the pastoral search process and the Call Committee so graciously answered! Judy and I have both enjoyed our time at Concordia immensely. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the quality of congregational life that you share. Your kindness and generosity have richly blessed us, and we will always treasure the many friendships we made at Concordia. God bless each of you, the ministry that you share, and Pastor Kingsborough. You will all continue to be in our prayers and in our hearts as well. With Thanksgiving to God, And With Gratitude to All, Pastor Burt 10 3

4 Pastor Mary Anne Kingsborough BEGINNINGS Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior! Ever since we were children the month of September has been a time of new beginnings. The new school year would bring about a new chapter in our lives which also brought new excitement and anxiety. We would wonder what our new teacher would be like and if our friends would be in our class. We would worry that the new schoolwork would be too difficult or the material boring. A new pastorate brings about these same emotions and questions for both the new Pastor and the congregation! What will they be like? Will I like her as a Pastor? Will we be able to learn together, and what are the expectations they have? Yes, indeed it is a time of beginnings full of excitement and anxiety! The best thing to get through a new beginning in life, whether it is a pastorate, a school year or a marriage is to pray for God s guidance and support. While this may seem rather obvious, prayer cannot be overstated enough in importance to anything in life, especially beginnings and endings. Yes there are endings involved in this process. Your interim Pastor has left and I have left my call at St. John s. While there may be things we miss about what was, let God in on what will be. God is the architect of life, and we are the body of Christ here on earth. Let us center ourselves in prayer for our new life in Christ together, a new beginning, a new chapter in Concordia s book of ministry. In Christ, Pastor Mary Anne Social Ministry Social Ministry will be collecting school and personal care kits in September for Lutheran World Relief Ingathering. The last Sunday for collection will be September 30th. Please place kits in the box provided for these in Front Narthex Include the following items in each School Kit: Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8 X 10½ ; no loose-leaf paper One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other One pencil sharpener One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band One box of 16 or 24 crayons One 2½ eraser Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. Please place all items together in a plastic or paper bag Include the following items in each Personal Care Kit: One light-weight bath-size towel (maximum 52 X 27 ), dark color recommended Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging* One sturdy comb, remove packaging One metal nail clippers (attached file optional), remove packaging Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Wrap all the items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn. Do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. 4 9

5 Hospital Note We must make an appeal to you to call the church office if you or a member of your family is admitted to the hospital. This is the only way that we can be assured of offering adequate pastoral coverage, and will also allow us to keep the prayer list in our worship bulletin current. Thanks in advance for your help. Newspaper articles are needed. Please cut out any thing found in any papers, etc. regarding any of our members or church, past and present. Put them in the Archives file box in the new message center or to the church office. Special Sale on cats meow buildings $10 Thank you. Charlie Ezren CLASSIC MOVIE BUFFS The Glass Bottom Boat Tuesday, September 18, 2012 (Third Tuesday of each month) 1:30 P.M. at the home of David Zimmerman 639 Hempfield Hill Road, Columbia A 1966 film with Doris Day and Rod Taylor, a blending of hilarity and romantic comedy: Bruce hires Jennifer to be his biographer, only to try to win her affections. However, there's a problem. Bruce's friend General Wallace Bleeker believes that Jennifer is a Russian spy, and he has her placed under surveillance. Then, when Jennifer catches on...watch Out! Also stars Arthur Godfrey, Paul Lynde, John McGivir and Dick Martin, who add to the fun. Come and sing along to The Glass Bottom Boat and Que Sera Sera. Everyone is Welcome! RSVP: Great news for Concordia NEW PASTOR We are pleased to announce that Pastor Mary Anne Kingsborough has accepted our call. She is scheduled to begin on the weekend of September 8-9, 2012 This is an exciting time for all of us at Concordia. Praise and thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and our Lower Susquehanna Synod staff for guiding our call committee, and all of us, during this process. Thanks be to God! Evangelism Update Starting Sunday, September 9, (Rally Day), name tags will be available and encouraged at all entrances for worship. We know that most of us are very familiar with each other; however, this will facilitate Pastor Mary Anne s recognition of our members. We are doing this with the long term goal of being more accessible and friendly to our guests and potential members. Also in September, prior to the prelude in our worship service, an Evangelism representative will be taking a few minutes of time to encourage all members to Meet and Greet Your Fellow Concordians. This will be a fun exercise in learning something new about our assembled members. We have much to share and learn from each other. So in addition to celebrating the beginning of our Sunday School Year, let us make this Rally Day an opportunity to celebrate each other as well! We are planning a Farewell Dinner for Pastor Burt and Judy on September 16 at 4:30 PM. Fellowship Committee will supply the meat and vegetables, and parishioners are asked to bring a salad or a dessert with recipe included. There will be a sign-up sheet in the west narthex to designate whether you will bring a salad or a dessert. 8 5

6 Opportunities Pastor Thomas Rundell will be celebrating the 40 th year of his ordination this year. Holy Spirit Lutheran Church is holding a reception in his honor on September 16 at 11 AM. They have invited our congregation to attend. Please sign up in the west narthex if you are attending, as we will need a count for their planning purposes. Evangelism Committee is going to offer transportation for shut-ins to come to worship service on September 15th, (one Saturday each month). See Kathy Bachman or Marian Kresge for details. If you know of anyone in the congregation who hasn t been coming because of transportation issues, please let us know. Also let us know if you can help. Please come! Please come! Rally Day, the traditional start of the Sunday school: Sunday, September 9, Holy Moly - Bible Brought to Life Thank You Dear Concordia Family, Thank you for paying for my camp! That was the best week of my life. I can t thank you enough. THANK YOU. P.S. My favorite part was making a raft. From: Hunter Long (Note: Concordia pays for half the cost.) Ruth Greenawalt thanks members for celebrating her 90th birthday after church on July 8. Thanks to Carole Daley, Tammy Walter, Carole McDonald, Marian Kresge and others for preparing the treats including a yummy chocolate cake with mousse filling. Thanks to the congregation for all the cards and well wishes. Ralph and I appreciate them very much. Ruth & Ralph Greenawalt Tuesday Toilers If you have some time to give, come help the Tuesday Toilers. We need help cutting patch squares and knotting quilts. Contact Florence Keck if interested. Baptism On August 26, we celebrated the birth of Haylie Lynn Bachman-Bair into the body of Christ through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. We pray God s richest blessings upon her. Registration forms are available in either narthex. Attention Voters: Starting with the Nov General Election, PA law now requires voters to show an acceptable photo ID to vote at the polls. A copy of PA s new Voter ID law is posted on the bulletin board. Members of the Evangelism Committee will be available for those who need transportation to the DMV to get your ID photo card. Please call Marian at for more information. For voting questions or requirements, see or call Luteba Lutheran Church in Tukuyu, Tanzania Needs our Help We received a letter from the Parish Leader of Luteba: A. Mwakipopota. He has said that 3 of the children who have been supported by our donations have been sent home because of lack of funds. For more details, his letter is posted in both narthexes. If you can help, please mark your donation for Luteba and place in the offering plate or send to our church office. You can see photos of Luteba in the downstairs hallway. 7
