2 Hello Everyone, This past month I have been taking a course called Money Leadership: Your Life with Money this is a required course for all first call pastors. This course is designed for us to look at how we think about money, what informs our decisions with regards to money, and ultimately to become comfortable with our own money issues so that we can become better at talking with others about their money issues. Even though there is a God element within this course, after all it is for pastors, it is not about, how to increase giving within the congregation, it s about taking a realistic look at your income and expenses and how that might change if you allowed your faith, your trust in God, to inform your money making decisions. Would that take away some of your stress about money? One of things we did, and I encourage you to do this exercise, is write our own money autobiography. Like a normal autobiography which is your life story seen through your own eyes and written by your own hand, a money autobiography is similar. It is your life story concerning money, from your earliest recollections as a child to today. What did your family teach you about money? How did your parents worry or not worry about money? Did you learn to save at an early age? Did you receive an allowance or not? Were you rich or poor or more accurately did you feel rich or poor? How did your attitude about money change as you became a teenager, a young adult, a parent? What is your happiest memory and your most unhappy memory with regards to money? How has your faith impacted your concerns about money? Etc This was hard for me to do, not necessarily answering these questions but weaving the answers into a narrative, a story of my life. If you re like me your just lived through the ebb and flow of income and bills, times where money wasn t an issue and times where it was lean and didn t much think about it. Doing an exercise like this forces us to think about it and it also helps us see what is the driving force behind our philosophy on money. If you choose to do this type of exercise it is for your eyes only though if you are married I would encourage you to share it with your spouse and have them share theirs with you. It is a chance to reflect on how and why your money decisions are made the way they are and for you to ask the question, if I put God in charge of my money how differently would I use it? Maybe it would be the same or maybe it wouldn t. If you would page through your Bible you would see a lot of passages that talk about wealth, not all of them bad. Jesus didn t care if you had money or not, what he cared about was if you used your money in a way that glorified God or glorified you. Jesus wants our trust in God to guide our use of money. One way of doing this is using a formula of 10, 10, 80. How this works is that you set aside your first fruits, 10%, of your income to God. Now that doesn t mean all 10% goes to the church though some should, but it should be used for helping those who are less fortunate than you, so out of that 10% some to the church, some to whatever charity or organization you choose, and maybe some gets saved to help out when disaster strikes. The second 10% is for your savings, for you to take care of yourself, and the 80 is what you live on. There are other formula s and other ways of saving and spending, use what is best for you. Personal finances are best handled when we fully trust in our faith, when we trust in God. God acts and we respond. All that we have and hold belongs to God and God alone. We are stewards of this earth but God wants us to enjoy His property, care for our families and live responsible lives until we die or Jesus comes again. With care and attention to details, by the power of the Holy Spirit, God provides us all that we need to do what is pleasing in His sight. Thanks be to God. Thank you to all of the parents who helped the children sell their tickets. It was a very successful adventure and all of the proceeds will go towards your Children s Sunday School. 5 Bethesda WELCA Bethesda WELCA met on May 10, 2017 at 1:30 at Sun Dial Manor. Bonnie Anderson had another excellent program. The title was Hats that Mothers Wore. Devotion was from Matthew 18:1-6. Bonnie read a poem How Many Hats Does a Mother Wear. A one-person skit was done by Bonnie. God delights in us and how can we delight in Him? A woman wears 41 hats in a day~ 7 in the a.m., 21 in the p.m., and 13 at night. She then used a poster to depict all the hats we mothers wear ~ taxi driver, a nurse, a detective, a gardener, a main, a chef, a atop hat, a baseball cap, a hard hat, a teacher, a fireman, an army hat a jester, a cowboy hat, a bridal veil, and lastly a crown as we are a child of God and a Christian mother. We had a short business meeting presided over by Bonnie Dolney and Jane Goehring. 3 senior quilts were given ~ Heather Lone, Samantha Stern, and Matthew Vehe. Bethesda is in charge of the afternoon program at Ne-So-Dak for the fall retreat. Shirley Gollnick will do some deep cleaning and Kay will show her what needs to be done after VBS. Ne-So-Dak will be celebrating their 75 th anniversary this year. Our July luncheon will be July 19 th. The secretary s report and treasurer s report were read and approved. Our June meeting will be June 14 th at 7:00 p.m. Sharon Johnson will do the program and Jane Goehring is the hostess. Lunch was provided by the Bethesda WELCA. Angel food cake with lemon topping and cool whip was served to residents and guests. Prayer concerns are: Gayle Horter, Kris Knutson, Casey Sichmeller, Lynn Lutz, Maddy Daam, Stephanie Huwe, Mavis Yrdanoff, and Jeff Peterson. Lorraine Anderson was hostess with 7 members present. The Bible Study was "Gentleness" based on 1 Thessalonians 2: Janet Coyne gave the Offering Meditation. Secretary s report was read and approved. Correspondence was reviewed. Treasurer report: April Offering - $50.00, General Fund - $452.34, Altar Fund - $ Mission Action Report: 10 quilts were made in April. May projects are soap collection and Personal Care Kits. New Bible Study Books were handed out. The Bible Study is titled "I AM: Who Jesus Is." The group discussed new countertop in the kitchen. Our next meeting will be June 5th at 6:30 pm. Janet will be hostess and Lorraine will have the Offering Meditation. We closed with praying The Lord s Prayer. Carol Flattum, Secretary

8 The Best Father Unlike an earthly prince, God didn t take a high-and-mighty title, notes 17th-century British preacher Thomas Watson. Instead, God calls himself Father to encourage us to pray to him. But God isn t just any father. Watson offers these reasons why God is the best Father : He is the most ancient (Daniel 7:9). He is perfect (Matthew 5:48). He is the wisest (Romans 16:27). He is the most loving (Zephaniah 3:17; 1 John 4:16). He has unsearchable riches (Ephesians 3:8). He can reform his children (Acts 9:11). He never dies (1 Timothy 6:16; Revelation 1:8) Why Grandma Gave One Sunday as she was getting ready for church, a grandmother received a call from her daughter. Can you watch the kids while we re out of town next week? the daughter asked. Grandma was so thrilled she put an extra $5 into the offering plate that morning. The next Sunday, after her three young grandchildren had returned home, she put in an extra $20.
