2 Sunday, June 14, 2015 LITURGY St. Josemaria Escriva/ Opus Dei St. Josemaria Escriva who was born in 1902 was a Roman Catholic Priest from Spain who founded Opus Dei ( which is Latin for God s Work), an organization of laypeople and priests dedicated to the teaching that everyone is called to holiness and that ordinary life is a path to sanctity. Please join us on Friday, June 26th, at 7:15pm for a bilingual Mass in honor of St. Josemaria Escriva. WORSHIP Kneel(er) Friendly Seating Would you like more room to kneel during Mass? Come up to the front, middle seating sections of the Church, where we are offering more leg room and more kneeling room. Usher Ministry - Help Needed! If you have a desire to assist others and to help provide a comfortable environment for worship, please consider the ministry of USHERS. We are in need of assistance in this ministry & will have a table on the front porch with information on June 13th & 14th. Come and join this giving ministry! Greeter Ministry If you have a willingness to embrace and welcome all who come to share in our Mass, please consider the ministry of GREETERS. We are in need of assistance in this ministry & will have a table on the front porch with information on June 13th & 14th. Share the welcoming spirit at Most Precious Blood! Funeral Choir Starting This Summer If you have a heart to comfort people who are grieving consider joining us for a Funeral Choir. The purpose of this group is to provide musical support at funerals and also to give more life to the standard responses as many who come for funerals are non-catholics or non-practicing. This is a great way to reach wide and help others in their time of need. We will have two rehearsals to cover all of the standard songs we use at funerals. Rehearsals will be Thursdays June 25th and July 9th, both at 7PM in the Parish Life Center. Please contact Mark Sibons for more information msibons@ oviedocatholic.org. 3 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ, Having recently moved to the area, a family invited me to bless their home. Barely unpacked, they had already hung the stairwell wall with a gallery of family photos. The father of the family proudly showed me an old black and white photo. He pointed at his own father who in the photo was only a young boy. My father had no shoes, he told me. None of the eight children had shoes. Looking closely at the photo of another generation, I saw that he was right. None of the children had shoes. A generation later, his family had grown from their humble roots in Puerto Rico. They had two children, a house, and two cars. They all had shoes. They were living the American dream. You parents have a dream for your children. You work hard so that your children have a better life than you have: better education, better opportunity, better health. You worry and pray so that your children have fewer regrets and less suffering. God has a dream for his children. His dream is not called the American Dream. Jesus called God s dream the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God, he began, is like a mustard seed! The mustard bush is an herb. On a pilgrimage in the Holy Land, I saw mustard bushes growing wild and leggy like a common weed along the side of the road. Cultivated, its seeds are used for mustard oil. It produces a large number of small yellow flowers. Jesus could have compared the Kingdom of God to a cedar tree. Everyone knew that cedar timber made boats and buildings. Cedar resin was used for embalming and perfume. The cedar tree was a much nobler choice than a mustard seed. Saying that the Kingdom of God was like a mustard seed is as if Jesus walked in Florida and said, The Kingdom of God is not like a royal palm tree. It s more like a palmetto. Instead of a tree with a smooth trunk like a marble column climbing to lush crown of palm leaves, the Kingdom of God is more like a low-lying scraggly palm frond. In other words, it is so commonplace that you don t even notice it. It grows everywhere! Wouldn t it be something if the Kingdom of God was as commonplace as a palmetto? God dreams that his Kingdom is everywhere. Not spectacular and otherworldly, the Kingdom of God is meant to thrive in our schools and families as simply and strongly as a mustard bush or a palmetto. God desires to reign in our businesses and politics. The Disney Dreamers Academy is a program for select high school students. We help unlock the potential of young people and enable them to imagine their futures anew through inspirational leaders who show how to set goals, make plans and dream big. Walt Disney himself, in his resolve to bring his dreams to life, is the role model of a Disney Dreamer and Doer. Jesus Christ dreamed God s dream. He proclaimed the Kingdom of God. In his resolve to make God s dream come true, Jesus suffered, died, and rose again. He sent his Spirit to establish the Church. Most Precious Blood dreams God s dream. Its purpose is to make known God s dream and work to make his dreams come true. Every Sunday we pray together for the coming of the Kingdom. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come,. In Christ, Father David 2

5 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time EVANGELIZATION It's FREE - Symbolon Symbolon is adult formation for every parishioner using modern technology. The Symbolon series consists of 20 short video teachings on various topics of the Catholic faith. Free to Most Precious Blood parishioners, Symbolon can be downloaded on any laptop, tablet, or smartphone and accessed at any time, for your convenience, 24/7! Go to our website and click on the Symbolon icon to register. It s FREE, what are you waiting for? Come & See Have you been coming to Mass but are not Catholic? Are you searching for answers to your faith questions and long for a closer relationship with God? If so, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Join us as we plant the seeds of faith and explore the richness and traditions of Catholicism. Inquiry sessions for the Christian Initiation process (RCIA) have started. These gatherings are for inquirers who are not baptized, as well as those who are baptized in another faith background, or baptized Catholics who have not received any other Sacraments. We invite you to ask questions of what Catholics believe in an open, informal and welcoming environment. Come and See Contact Donna Scimeca at x121 or dscimeca@ oviedocatholic.org. When a Loved One Leaves the Church Pray, then pray some more! As Catholics, we know that everything starts with prayer. By praying we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, who guides us in all our actions, including how we interact with our fallen-away family members. What exactly should we pray for? Obviously, we ask that our loved ones might return to the Church, but more specifically, pray that the Lord might bring faithful Catholics into their lives. Pray for opportunities to share the Catholic Faith in ways that are attractive. Ask to be given the right words to say whenever the Church is discussed. When we ask for these things, we will be amazed at how often God answers our specific prayers in ways we never thought possible. OSV, In Focus Why Do I Have to Attend Mass? Here are some solid responses to the typical excuses we hear about not attending Mass. I don t need to go to Mass to get close to God. At Mass, you receive God himself Jesus Christ truly present in the sacrament. Even a beautiful mountain vista can t compare to that. I don t get anything out of Mass. Don t expect it to be entertainment. Learn about what it does: joins us to Christ, separates us from sin, wipes away venial sins, commits us to the poor and prepares us for heaven. I don t have the time. There are 24 hours a day, 168 hours a week. Mass takes one hour. That s less than 1% of your week. Make the time. I m a sinner. I don t deserve to be at Mass. Welcome to the club! We are a Church of saved sinners. None of us deserves to be here. See you at Mass! Juan XXIII Ministry Celebrates 6th Anniversary Juan XXIII ministry will celebrate their 6th anniversary with Mass on Monday, June 15, at 7PM. The Mass will take place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Everyone is welcome! Come and celebrate with the Holy Spirit! Upcoming Mass Readings Monday, June 15 2 Cor 6:1-10/ Mt 5:38-42 Tuesday, June 16 2 Cor 8:1-9/ Mt 5:43-48 Wednesday, June 17 2 Cor 9:6-11/ Mt 6:1-6, Thursday, June 18 2 Cor 11:1-11/ Mt 6:7-15 Friday, June 19 St. Romuald, Abbot 2 Cor 11:18, 21-30/ Mt 6:19-23 Saturday, June 20 2 Cor 12:1-10/ Mt 6:24-34 Sunday, June 21 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jb 38:1, 8-11/ 2 Cor 5:14-17/ Mk 4:35-41 Are you travelling? 6 Sunday, June 14, 2015 COMMUNITY Savannah Court The monthly Mass at Savannah Court will be Saturday, June 20. We need several people to assist residents who are wheelchair bound or in need of walkers to come to Mass. Mass begins at 9:30AM and we would like to have our volunteers arrive by 9AM. Kindness and compassion are two qualities required. Your total commitment is approximately one and a half hours. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Monteleone at or at cjmont119@ymail.com. Around the diocese Peter's Pence Collection is June Catholics throughout the Diocese of Orlando will have the opportunity to support Pope Francis in his charitable works throughout the world by contributing to the Peter s Pence special collection June Emphasizing the role of Catholics in allowing Christ s love to reach others, this worldwide collection unites us in solidarity with the Holy Father and his works of charity to those in need: victims of war, oppression, religious persecution, natural disasters and other human promotion projects around the world. It also assists seminaries and institutes of Christian formation in developing countries. Embarking on the third year of his pontificate, Pope Francis continues to call each of us to be a witness of charity. There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace, he said. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Please give generously to the collection.
