2 Pastor's Letter Dear brothers and sisters in Christ The Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans is the single most influential document in Christian history. During the Reformation, Romans became a battleground between Protestant and Catholic understandings of the faith. The relationships between Christianity and Judaism and the secular world are defined by the Letter to the Romans. The Church gives Romans its due. It is the second reading in Sunday Mass for four months. From June through September every three years, we listen to the Letter to the Romans. Last Sunday, Saint Paul told us that all creation is groaning in labor pains. Beginning with Adam and Eve, creation has suffered from human sin (Romans 8:18-23). We ourselves groan. Our desires for justice, peace, and human dignity remain unfulfilled. We long to be set free from our shame. Saint Paul in the letter to the Romans says that we do not groan alone. The Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings (Romans 8:26). We do not know how to pray as we ought. So the Holy Spirit prays for us. An example of the Spirit interceding is in the Acts of the Apostles. Barnabas and Paul had completed their relief mission to Jerusalem. Gathered with other leaders in Antioch on the coast of Syria, they were praying. They were not praying for anything in specific. They were simply worshipping the Lord and fasting. That s when the Holy Spirit spoke. Normally the Spirit spoke indirectly. In the creed, we say that the Holy Spirit has spoken through the prophets. In the only instance in Scripture that I am aware of, the Holy Spirit spoke directly. He did not speak through anybody else. He had something important to say. Set aside for me Paul and Barnabas for the work to which I have called them (Acts 13:2). The Holy Spirit was not announcing the end of the world. No specific plan was set forth. The Spirit simply set aside Paul and Barnabas for the work to which he had called them. Paul and Barnabas changed their course. Instead of staying in Antioch, they took a boat to the island of Cyprus and then to Asia Minor. In a journey which lasted several years, they established new churches. Paul made a second and a third missionary Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time journey that went to Greece. Preaching the gospel to new lands, he established many churches. Having completed his task in the Eastern Empire, Paul wrote the letter to the Romans in anticipation of further missionary work in distant Spain. Paul s missionary journeys changed the early Church. The Church changed from Jewish faith to a worldwide religion. The change began with the Holy Spirit guiding the church. The Spirit did not lay out everything that would happen. He simply said that he had some work for Paul and Barnabas to do. The rest is salvation history. You have received the Holy Spirit. You have had hands laid on you in Baptism and Confirmation. The same Spirit that guided Paul and Barnabas and changed the course of the Church dwells within you. Through fasting and worshipping like Paul and Barnabas, you can prepare to hear the Spirit. Through the Scriptures and the Church, the Spirit speaks to you. Where he leads you, you can be sure it will be an adventure. This week, before you pray Romans chapter 8, ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you. In Christ, Father David

Natural Family Planning DID YOU KNOW In 2005, The World Health Organization (WHO) classified oral contraceptives as Group I Carcinogens (Group I being the most dangerous)? When practiced correctly, NFP has an unintended pregnancy rate of less than 0.2%? Couples who practice NFP have a less than 3% divorce rate? Natural Family Planning (NFP) is fertility awareness. These scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. These methods also have the advantage over artificial birth control of avoiding side effects and health risks. NFP methods are based on the observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. No chemicals, drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. It is 100% natural and ecological. NFP is good for the body and great for the soul! Since the methods of NFP respect the lovegiving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love. Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is July 23rd 29th, These dates highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Frances Stadler, fstadler@oviedocatholic.org. Come and See RCIA Have you been coming to Mass but are not Catholic? Development of our Spiritually Adopted Baby at 4 Months (17 Weeks) I am about 3 inches long, weigh almost 6 ounces, and I can swim, kick and do somersaults! My finger and toenails are growing, eyebrows and hair have sprouted, and my heart is pumping at a rate of as much as 6 gallons a day. Mom might hear tiny thumps of my heartbeat with an external monitor. You did form my inward parts; you did knit me together in my mother's womb." -Ps 139[138]
