1 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 26, Pastor: Fr. David Scotchie dscotchie@oviedocatholic.org Parochial Vicar: Fr. Dominic Buckley dbuckley@oviedocatholic.org Sacrament of Reconciliation: Thursday at 6pm-7pm Saturday at 3:30pm-4:30pm
2 Dear Friends in Christ, Five barley loaves and two fish, that s all the boy had to offer. Five barley loaves and two fish. Barley loaves were food for peasants. Rough and bland, barley loaves were small, maybe as big as a fist. Five barley loaves and two fish, enough for one person to have two meals. Or two people to share one meal. That was all the boy had to give to Jesus. Five thousand men, not counting women and children, Jesus wanted to feed. The people did not ask him for a free lunch. Jesus simply wanted to feed all five thousand who had gathered to hear him. Oviedo High School has about 2,500 students. Hagerty High School enrolls about the same number of students. Imagine all of the students from both high schools crammed into one cafeteria, hungry as growing locusts, and the only food in cafeteria line was five barley loaves and two fish. What good were these few loaves and fishes for so many? Philip the disciple did the math. Two hundred days wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little. He looked at the books, looked at the crowd, and said, Sorry, it can t be done. There s never enough. There s not enough time, not enough money. Good-paying jobs are hard to find, roads can t handle the traffic, and an appointment with the right doctor takes months. Anyone can see that resources are limited. There s never enough. One of Jesus disciples might have looked at the 5,000 plus crowd, I hope they brought their lunches. Others might have 1 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time thought, I hope they don t expect us to share our lunch. Jesus did not blink an eye at the crowd. Jesus took responsibility for them. He said, Lunch is on me. Jesus took the five barley loaves. He gave thanks to God the Father. He gave the bread and fish to the crowd. And everyone had their fill. There were even leftovers! Several years ago, a visiting missionary priest, Father Luc Jolicouer from Haiti, talked about his orphanage and school. People in Haiti were so hungry that they ate mud cookies dirt and sea water cooked over charcoal. He said that it did not taste too bad. A parishioner heard the story. Even though he had just lost his job, he took an application. After a month of debate and prayer, despite his unemployment, he and his wife and three little boys decided to go ahead with sponsoring a child. A week later he found another job. The moral of the story is that sponsoring a hungry child in an orphanage will get you a job, right? No! Not at all!!! It does show that the Lord does great things for others with the little you give him, even if it is only a barley loaf. For the next five Sundays at Mass, we are reflecting on the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. It be gins with fear. The natural desire to help others is tempered by the fear that you will not have enough for yourself. Drawn more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist, you are set free from the fear that you will not have enough. You are set free in the Paschal Banquet to give yourself to others as Christ gives himself to you. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament helps you to taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:9). Save a date in your calendar to take advantage of the extra opportunities for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Feeding the five thousand is not about sharing, Some for you and some for me. It s about miracles. In the sacrifice of the Mass, the Holy Spirit transforms bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. It s a miracle. All it takes is all you have. In Christ, Father David PS I am away this week teaching preaching to deacon candidates at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana. You are in my prayers. See you next week! Lord Reach Wide and Share Blessings for the good of his people and the glory of his name.
3 Sunday, July 26, 2015 Worship Saint of the Week St. Ignatius of Loyola, Priest Feast day - July 31 St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in his family castle in Guipúzcoa, Spain, the youngest of 13 children; He became a solider to fight against the French, but was injured in battle. While St. Ignatius was recovering from his injuries, he read the lives of the saints, and decided to dedicate himself to becoming a soldier of the Catholic Faith. Soon after he experienced visions, but a year later suffered a trial of fears and scruples, driving him almost to despair. Out of this experience he wrote his famous "Spiritual Exercises". After traveling and studying in different schools, he finished in Paris, where he received his degree at the age of 43. Many first hated St. Ignatius because of his humble Lifestyle. Despite this, he attracted several followers at the university, including St. Francis Xavier, and soon started his order called The Society of Jesus, or Jesuits. Pope Francis is a Jesuit. 6 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time evangelization It's FREE - Symbolon Symbolon aims at an immersion in the Catholic Faith that transforms adults on all levels: how we think, how we pray, and how we live. Need a clearer explanation of a particular Church teaching, do you wonder why Catholics believe what we believe and why? Symbolon is adult formation for every parishioner using modern technology; it is designed to help parishioners encounter the sacredness of the faith. Comprised of 20 short video teachings on various topics of the Catholic faith, Symbolon can be downloaded on any laptop, tablet, or smartphone and accessed at your convenience any time of the day or night. Go to our website and register today to start exploring. Be in the know and share your faith - it s FREE to Most Precious Blood parishioners, what are you waiting for? Come & See Have you been coming to Mass but are not Catholic? Has God placed upon your heart an openness to becoming Catholic, and a longing for a closer relationship with Him as you search for answers to your faith questions? If so, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Join us as we plant the seeds of faith and explore the richness and traditions of Catholicism. Inquiry sessions for the Christian Initiation process (RCIA) have started. These gatherings are for inquirers who are not baptized, as well as those who are baptized in another faith background, or baptized Catholics who have not received any other Sacraments. We invite you to ask questions of what Catholics believe in an open, informal and welcoming environment. Come and See Contact Donna Scimeca at x121 or dscimeca@oviedocatholic.org. SPONSOR MINISTRY (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you being called to walk the journey of faith with someone who wants to become Catholic? An RCIA Sponsor supports an Inquirer seeking the faith to understand Catholic traditions and way of life, not by being a teacher, but by supporting the person and sharing their own experiences of being Catholic. Sponsors are not expected to know the answer to every question, but should have a willingness to share their faith,be welcoming and hospitable, and a good listener. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics, received the three sacraments of initiation, and if married, then married in the Catholic Church. Many sponsors find that serving in this ministry renews and enriches their own faith. Training will be provided. For more information please contact Donna Scimeca at the parish office x321 or dscimeca@oviedocatholic.org When A Loved One Leaves the Church Pray, then pray some more! As Catholics, we know that everything starts with prayer. By praying we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, who guides us in all our actions, including how we interact with our fallen-away family members. What exactly should we pray for? Obviously, we ask that our loved ones might return to the Church, but more specifically, pray that the Lord might bring faithful Catholics into their lives. Pray for opportunities to share the Catholic Faith in ways that are attractive. Ask to be given the right words to say whenever the Church is discussed. When we ask for these things, we will be amazed at how often God answers our specific prayers in ways we never thought possible. 7 Sunday, July 26, 2015 stewardship Thought of the Week The hand of the Lord feeds us, says the psalmist; he answers all our needs. Both Elisha s servant in the first reading and the disciples in the Gospel story who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand saw this happen and knew it to be true. Learning to trust God takes an initial leap of faith, in which we recognize that God has always been with us, and always will be. See Psalm 145. How can you grow in your Trust for God this week? Featured Ministry of the Week: Most Precious Women The Most Precious Women s group promotes spiritual and social growth by providing service in support of the Parish. Our ministry is open to all women. Meetings are held periodically; service and social activities are provided throughout the year. We coordinate socials, field trips, guest speakers, service projects, luncheons, and much more. Please watch the bulletin for further details. When practiced correctly, NFP has an unintended pregnancy rate of less than 0.2%? The divorce rate among couples practicing NFP is less than 5%? Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. Since the methods of NFP respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love! WANT TO LEARN MORE?
