4 REGISTER TODAY... Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn t Say. Join Bill Logan for a Thursday morning class this January-February exploring Adam Hamilton s new book, Half Truths. Everything happens for a reason. God helps those who help themselves. God won t give you more than you can handle. Love the sinner, hate the sin. They are simple phrases. They sound Christian like something you might find in the Bible. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join others as they search for the whole truth by comparing these common Christian clichés to the message and ministry of Jesus. Stacy Moore (stacy@spres.org) to register. Books are $14, available in Fellowship Hall on January 8 and Elizabeth Link s office thereafter. Confirmed Dates (note later start/finish dates): Thursdays (9:30-11:00 a.m.); January 19, 26, and February 2, 9, 16. Adult Classes Coming Soon... Creed: What Christians Believe and Why: Bill Logan will be leading a class this Lent, exploring Adam Hamilton s new study on the Apostles Creed. Contact the office or Stacy Moore (stacy@spres.org) to register. Books will be available for purchase in the coming weeks. Class Dates: Thursdays (9:30-11:00 a.m.); March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and April 6. Hungry Women: Elizabeth Link invites you to join her in exploring Ann Voskamp s new study, The Broken Way. As Eugene Peterson puts it, there is nothing broken that cannot be restored by making the living Christ present. Explore the ways we are called to slow down, take account of our lives, and allow faith to begin to expose and heal the broken places in our lives. Contact the office or Stacy Moore (stacy@spres.org) to register. Books will be available for purchase in the coming weeks. Class Dates: Every other Thursday (11:00 a.m. 12:00 noon); February 2, 16, March 2, 16, 30, and April 13. The New Year is a great time to join in on an Adult Sunday School Class! Please consider one of the following opportunities for education: Journey Through the Bible () - The class will be finishing up its study of the Gospel of John and moving into a study on Paul s Letter to the Romans, beginning on January 29. The Open Door Class (Session Room) - Ever feel like Jesus has been kidnapped by the Christian Right and discarded by the Secular Left? Join for a new study and conversation around Saving Jesus Redux, exploring the relevance of Jesus for the 21st Century, beginning on January 29. Covenant Conversation () - Join a diverse group of adults interested in learning more about theology and the life of faith, exploring Christian beliefs and the life of Jesus. Wired Word (Café, downstairs) - Each Sunday, this class tackles a wide variety of current events through the lens of faithful discernment. They d love to have you sit in or join in the conversation! UPCOMING POP-UP SUNDAY SCHOOL DATE - FEBRUARY 5 (10:00 A.M.) - JOURNAL OF A LIFETIME: MY APPALACHIAN TRAIL THRU-HIKE - During the summer months of 2016, church member Jim Beeson set out on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, which took him through 14 states and introduced him to countless people and experiences. He experienced a community on the AT not unlike the community found in a church family like Second, where he encountered Trail Angels, Trail Maintainers, and trail towns all living examples of communities of support and care. Jim will share beautiful photos exhibiting God s beauty in creation and stories from this gift of time that allowed him to reflect on life and what is most important. The group will meet in Fellowship Hall. BAPTISM OF THE LORD
