Paul Uzel How are you celebrating All Saints Day (if at all!)? This holiday (holy-day) has been in the Christian calendar for generations long, long before any Reformation was underway. Of course it occurs right AFTER Reformation Day, a more distinctly Lutheran event when Luther posted his 95 theses about how to improve the church of his day, the Roman Church. And Wesley had ideas, also, after his church, the Anglican or Church of England separated from Rome to allow King Henry to obtain a bride who COULD bear him male heirs! Most of us celebrate today with Halloween, or All Hallos E en (Evening), and miss the point of All Hallos day. And the point is not to be missed, partly because it answers a serious question of the first few hundred years of Christianity (and also of our time: Is that all there is? ). There was a dark existential movie by that name which carries the idea, along with a few others like Alfie with its theme song, What s it all about, Alfie? (Google these if you re not familiar with them.) It s about death, not unlike Halloween. The question was and is: What happens to the Christian when they die? Jesus hasn t returned yet as he promised! And we re dying, and others have died, people who taught me the faith (like my mother), people who challenged my faith (like my father) and so many others who I know loved Jesus and had a relationship with him. The answer generations ago was to make saints out of the dead, elevating them almost to god-like status, even praying to them because, apparently, they could understand us better than a perfect God. Now believing that my mother is somewhere better, somewhere on the other side of that curtain of death is comforting to me, and it should be for you, even in your grief. (Yesterday, I noticed it was the anniversary of Orson Welles 1938 War of the Worlds radio drama and regretted not asking my mother about it. She was in her teens in upstate New Jersey at the time!) But we ALL are saints. God, through Sanctifying Grace, is in the process of making us ALL holy, set aside for God s purposes. And we don t know what perfection will be like. That s not important. What IS important is if that Sanctifying Grace works through us to show OTHERS what our wonderful relationship with God is! So, celebrate All Saints Day, whether you did/do so on Thursday, Nov. 1st, on this coming Sunday, and/or every day as you recognize the holy work of God in all around you! Praise God for God s Sanctifying Grace! Rev. Paul Uzel is pastor of Stanwood Union Church (UMC/PCUSA) in Stanwood, Iowa and father of Ora Uzel, St. Luke s Administrative Assistant

7 Sedona Grant Voting Multiply Joy! Friends, we are fully into our Fall cycle of ministries here at St. Luke s. Among the exciting new additions, we have hired Rachel Potter as our full-time Children and Youth Director! Along with her support team she is bringing new vision and energy to our Sunday School, the youth group called Impact! and Wonderful Wednesday programming! Also, a new Sunday School class for young adults (currently going through Max Lucado s Life Lessons from Mark) is meeting in the Wesley room. In coming weeks, I ll be telling about more of our life-changing ministries. The joy and satisfaction of changing lives through supporting St. Luke s ministries is one strong reason why we give to the Church. Over the next several weeks we will be exploring why and how we can make personal commitments of giving for the coming year. We will consecrate these commitments on Sunday, November 25. Parking Spot Available The church parking lot has a spot available for rent at $35 per month. Rental is for weekdays 8a.m. to 5p.m. Please spread the word! If someone you know would like to rent a spot, have them note their license plate information; make, model, color of their car; and contact information. It depends upon volunteer help during the time men are at the shelter. The homeless shelters in our community are already running at capacity. If you feel called to help provide safe shelter to homeless people in our community, please call for more information about this opportunity to make our community safer for those who have no home. Contact: guesthouse@almosthomedbq.org Sedona Staffing is giving $2,500 to the non-profit organization with the most votes. 8 The Potter s Wheel Children s Sabbath was extremely successful this year. We had thirty children participate in the service this year. They read Scripture, led responsive readings, lead the congregation in prayer, sang beautifully, played the bells, and closed the service from the Tower Chimes. Thank you to all the parents that brought their children to church on Sunday; without the parents and children the service would not have been as successful. Nancy Bradley delivered a very powerful message during both the 8:30 and 10:45 service. One take away from her message I got was the amount of poverty and homelessness is in our own community. So often. like she said, we think about third world countries like Africa or Honduras not out our front door. I was inspired to reach out and serve those living next to me, and I hope you were too. Children s Sabbath was the kick off for raising money for Heifer International. The kids goal is to raise $1,000 by December 9. I agreed that if they meet their goal by December 9 that I would let them pie me in the face. I hope you will help the kids reach their goal! Mark your calendar!
